Courage Is Contagious
Courage Is Contagious: And Other Reasons to Be Grateful for Michelle Obama | Nick Haramis
15 posts | 10 read | 35 to read
A collection of essays celebrating the influential former first lady, by an array of acclaimed contributors and with a foreword by Lena Dunham Michelle Obamas legacy transcends categorization. Mrs. Obama was not only our first black first lady; she was President Obamas equal partner in marriage and parenthood and a tireless advocate for womens rights, education, healthy eating, and exercise. Her genre-busting personal style encouraged others to speak, to engage, even to dress as they wished. In an extension of his popular T, The New York Times Style Magazine feature, Nick Haramis has assembled nineteen essays from prizewinning writers, Hollywood stars, and political leadersall of whom have been moved and influenced by Mrs. Obamas extraordinary example of grace in power. Here are original testimonials from Gloria Steinem, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Alice Waters, and Charlamagne tha God, among others. Presidential biographer Jon Meacham supplies historical perspective. Actress Tracee Ellis Ross suggests that Mrs. Obama provided an antidote to all the false representations of black women that have inundated us for centuries. Anna Wintour and designer Jason Wu celebrate the former first ladys impact as an international fashion icon. Two ninth-grade girlsone in training to be a boxertalk about how Mrs. Obama has emboldened them to be themselves. Here are some of the many facets of Michelle Obama as she continues to inspire us, a stirring reminder that the best of America once lived in the White House, embodied in one authentic, inclusive, and courageous woman. Advance praise for Courage Is Contagious Courage Is Contagious reminds us of the fortitude, brilliance, grace, humility, compassion, and humor of a woman we were so crazy lucky to have serve as first lady. This is an exceptional celebration of a most exceptional American.J.J. Abrams The first lady planted a powerful new knowledge inside of each of us. When you read this book you realize its still in there and always will be.Miranda July, author of The First Bad Man and No One Belongs Here More Than You The diversity of the voices in Courage Is Contagious captures perfectly why Michelle Obama is so remarkable. If we can all see our best selves in her so vividly, how can we really be that different from each other? This glorious little book will give you goosebumps as it takes you on a journey celebrating one of the most important people alive.iO Tillett Wright, author of Darling Days

This slim book of short pieces is a paean to Michelle Obama. Proud but not fawning, it celebrates her strength, intelligence, realness, and yes, her style. I feel warm after reading it. 😊

I never thought I was alone in the love that I had for a woman I never met. During the Obama Presidency, Mrs. Obama gave a face to black women all across America and the world for that matter. Tearing down stigmas and negative connotations that have been associated with black women, for centuries. Showcasing that we are eloquent, graceful, and intelligence. Courage is Contagious affirmed that we are inspirational and magical, in our own right.

BellaBookNook Well said. I feel the same and must check out this book. 6y

This book made me both happy and sad. Happy that we had someone so wonderful as First Lady. Sad that she's no longer in the White House.
I liked how you hear from a variety of voices like Tracee Ellis Ross, Gloria Steinem, Jason Wu, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and also two ninth-grade girls, on how Michelle Obama has influenced their lives.

Andrea313 I can't wait to listen to this! Thanks for the reminder to add it to my Audible wishlist! 6y

I enjoyed this short and sweet book of tributes - too short, actually, as I was surprised and bummed that it went by so quickly on audio! I would have been happy to bask in Michelle‘s radiance for much, much longer. ✨ Now counting down to the release of her book in November! ⏳

#Tbrtemptation from the National Museum of African-American History and Culture gift shop!

Incredible museum, btw. If you can get tickets (we managed to score same day tickets this morning), I highly recommend a visit to this new museum that I thought would be on my bucket list for much longer before I could get there! 😃

MallenNC I really want to go to that museum. I've heard such good things about it. And I will of course have to look for books at the gift shop. 6y

A teeny-tiny book with powerful reflections on First Lady in my heart, Michelle Obama. Lovely, fast and heartening read for anyone feeling despair at our current state of affairs.
