Lord John and the Private Matter
Lord John and the Private Matter | Diana Gabaldon
SPECIAL FOR THIS EDITION: The Return of Jamie & Claire -- a sneak preview of the next Outlander novel!Plus the short story Lord John and the Hell-fire Club.Adored bestselling author Diana Gabaldon brings us the first book in a new trilogy featuring many of the characters from her wildly popular Outlander series. In her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels, Diana Gabaldon introduced millions of readers to a dazzling world of history and adventure -- a world of vibrant settings and utterly unforgettable characters. Now one of these characters, Major Lord John Grey, opens the door to his own part of this world -- eighteenth-century London, a seething anthill of nobility and rabble peopled by soldiers and spies, whores and dukes. Great Britain is battling France for supremacy on three continents -- and life is good for a soldier. The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from Londons Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majestys Army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: the Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade in arms, who may have been a traitor.Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society -- and threatens all he holds dear. From the bawdy houses of Londons night-world to the stately drawing rooms of the nobility, and from the blood of a murdered corpse to the thundering seas ruled by the majestic fleet of the East India Company, Lord John pursues the elusive trails of a vanishing footman and a woman in green velvet, who may hold the key to everything -- or nothing. The early days of the Seven Years War come brilliantly to life in this historical mystery by an author whose unique and compelling storytelling has engrossed millions of readers worldwide. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Catching a glimpse in the toilets at his club, Lord John Grey realises his cousin's fiance has the pox. How can he arrange for her to be released from the engagement without causing a scandal? He also gets involved in an attempt to trace the theft of troop requisition papers. The two situations are unexpectedly connected.

Good intrigue against a fascinating historical background.

I haven't read the Outlander series (nor seen the TV show), and this is my first Gabaldon novel. I enjoyed the writing style and the Audible performance. There's nothing about this book that makes me jump up and down screaming about it, but I also have nothing bad to say!

Side note: having read Darker by E.L. James in the past month, it has bothered me to no end that the two main characters surnames are Grey and Trevelyan here.

Lord John tries to quietly investigate the death of a fellow soldier who may have been involved in treason. He‘s also trying to prevent his cousin from entering a disastrous marriage, and grieving the loss of his lover, Horace. Good characters, and slow but steady pacing.

Unlike the Outlander series books that are full of smutty romance and rich with adventure, Lord John and the Private Matter is an historical mystery that reads similar to a Sherlock Holmes novel with loads of sleuthing and intrigue. Imagine murder, mayhem and mystery. I read this as a campion to the Outlander to prepare for future story lines. Had I not loved the Outlander series, I'm not sure I would have picked up this series on its own. 3*

RaimeyGallant Ah! @CarlyQuinn They didn't tell me it shipped! It was supposed to read 'Dear Litten @erinreads'. Did it say something like that? Anyway, Carly and I are your surprise belated secret santas, and there's another package on its way to you. @Avanders @MrBook @BookBabe (edited) 6y
erinreads @RaimeyGallant There was a bookmark with writing on it, which I can now see saying Raimey on it, so now that makes sense! 😂 THANK YOU SO MUCH! 💕💕💕 You and @CarlyQuinn are AMAZING and I swear the generosity and kindness from most people here on Litsy is enough to make my heart burst! 6y
RaimeyGallant Yea for #LittenLove! Stay tuned for package numero deux. @carlyquinn put it in the mail a couple of days ago. She's my sister by the way. This #SSGP package was a family affair, because there are a couple of used goodies from my mom in there too. :) 6y
RaimeyGallant I'm a little sad the bookstore didn't get Ms. Gabaldon to custom inscribe the book like they said they would, but if you're happy, I'm happy. :) 6y
RaimeyGallant And the reason we sent the signed copy separately is because the bookstore wanted to charge me my first born to ship it to Canada, so we decided to send that part of the gift directly to you. :) 6y
erinreads @RaimeyGallant @CarlyQuinn I am beyond happy and pleasantly surprised and I love you and your family so much! 😘 6y
RaimeyGallant I'll let them know. :) 6y

This book is not as good as the Outlanders but overall I did enjoy it. It was fairly light, easy reading with a little mystery for Lord John to solve. This book would have been more enjoyable and engrossing if the other characters had more meaningful interactions with our title character. I love Lord John and his young valet, Tom, but most of the other characters were a little flat for me. I expect Lord John‘s story will improve with each book.

I began the series in 2014, in time to watch the new STARZ series. I've read all of the Outlander series and all of the Lord John Grey series. If you enjoy historical fiction, time travel, and tremendous storytelling, check out these books.

This was a quick, fun audiobook. I️ loved the narrator, and the mystery element of this story was entertaining. Very different from the Outlander books.

I️ should mention that I️ absolutely love Lord John Grey... he‘s one of my favorites throughout the books, so I️ have always planned to read his series.

I‘m actually pleased that I️ waited until now, because I️ have the added bonus of picturing this guy as Lord John. ❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

swishandflick I'm obsessed with this series but have never the John Gray books because it felt weird to read an Outlander book that doesn't center on Jamie and Claire. But now that I've got this guy pictured in my head I may have to give them a go 😂 6y
sprainedbrain @swishandflick I️ was sort of the same way... honestly I think it was the casting this season that made me finally start the Lord John series. Now I️ know they are really not Outlander books... this one has a totally different feel, but every time Jamie is mentioned I still swoon a little. 😂 (edited) 6y

LauraBrook Lord I love this pic! You‘re the first person I know to have read this series and I‘m glad it was so good! Also, thank you for raving about Shane East as a narrator. I‘m listening to Royally Screwed right now, and 🔥 😍 it‘s so good! 6y
sprainedbrain @LauraBrook my gosh I️ love Shane East/Steve West. 😍 6y
LauraBrook @sprainedbrain Crap, did I eff up his name? Dang! Anyways, I know you know who I mean. He‘s got such a great voice. ❤️ 6y
sprainedbrain No, you didn‘t! His real name (I️ think) is Steve West, but he records the naughty books under Shane East. 😂 So you can listen to him under either name! (edited) 6y
sprainedbrain @4thhouseontheleft I️ *may* have made this pick my wallpaper on my phone. 😳😂 6y

Scenes from my #audiowalk at lunch today... we‘ve officially left the pretty part of autumn behind, I‘m afraid.

Loving this book, but then I️ just adore Lord John. And not only because we have the same feelings for Jamie Fraser. 😂

Liatrek I really enjoyed this one! Lord John is so amazing ❤️ I need to read the next one in the series. 6y
Cortg I need to read the last published Outlander book, then on to John ❤️❤️❤️ 6y

Crinoline_Laphroaig I love Lord John. He"s such a fascinating character. 7y
anhistorianabouttown @missnavigation I might like him better than Claire! 7y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I think what I like best is his and Jamie's friendship. British Gay Man and Scottish Catholic who regardless off there differences recognize that the other is honorable man. 7y

I haven't read this yet, picked it up awhile ago at a library book sale but thought it fit the #sail prompt. I'm slowly making my way through the Outlander series and thought this might break it up a bit. #lyricalapril #aprilphotochallenge

Cinfhen Loved seeing all the different book covers with sails on the front and your little whale is too cute ⛵️🐳 ⚓️ 7y
Cortg I'm slowly making my way through the series as well, like 4 years now. I just have the 8th book (hopefully this summer) and the final book whenever it gets published! 7y
Ncostell @cortg Wow, you're way ahead of me! I have just read the first three. I still have a long way to go! 7y
Cortg @Ncostell Slow and steady. I read 2 a year except the first year, I just read the one book. I love them but there soooo long and there are so many other books to read. Plus, I'm not good with reading the same author, I need to mix it up 😉 7y

Lord John is one of my favorite characters from the Outlander novels. His love for Jaime and his family is just heart warming to read. This is the first in his series of books. I enjoyed it but the ending was little flat. I still recommend for fans of the Outlander series.
