The Silver Star
The Silver Star: A Novel | Jeannette Walls
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls gripping new novel that "transports us with her powerful storytelling...She contemplates the extraordinary bravery needed to confront real-life demons in a world where the hardest thing to do may be to not run away" (O, The Oprah Magazine). It is 1970 in a small town in California. Bean Holladay is twelve and her sister, Liz, is fifteen when their artistic mother, Charlotte, takes off to find herself, leaving her girls enough money to last a month or two. When Bean returns from school one day and sees a police car outside the house, she and Liz decide to take the bus to Virginia, where their widowed Uncle Tinsley lives in the decaying mansion thats been in Charlottes family for generations. An impetuous optimist, Bean soon discovers who her father was, and hears stories about why their mother left Virginia in the first place. Money is tight, and the sisters start babysitting and doing office work for Jerry Maddox, foreman of the mill in town, who bullies his workers, his tenants, his children, and his wife. Liz is whip-smartan inventor of word games, reader of Edgar Allan Poe, nonconformist. But when school starts in the fall, its Bean who easily adjusts, and Liz who becomes increasingly withdrawn. And then something happens to Liz in the car with Maddox. Jeannette Walls has written a deeply moving novel about triumph over adversity and about people who find a way to love each other and the world, despite its flaws and injustices.

A quick read with a somewhat predictable plot, but still enjoyable. Themes of mental health and racism.

“The Silver Star”, written by Jeanette Walls, is a novel that reflects the life of two little girls, Jean and Liz, trying their best to get by without a father figure and a mother figure most of the time. Their mother, an aspiring actress and singer, with no real success, constantly leaves the girls to meet with directors or other musicians to try and make a name for herself. After a meltdown with the girls, she packed her bags leaving the girls…

grace.hartman …unsure if she would ever return. In need of an adult figure in their lives, the girls set out to Virginia to live with their uncle Tinsley. During the five weeks their mother was gone, Liz and Jean found out the truth about their fathers, which their mother never wished to reveal. When mother returned to take the girls again, a series of meltdowns unfolded, leaving the girls no choice but to move back with their uncle. This time the girls had… 2y
grace.hartman …to find jobs in order to afford new clothes/ school supplies. Unfortunately, the only work they could find at their age was for an evil man who had terrible intentions with Liz. A series of court appearances and lots of stress lead the girls to yet again face even more hardships without their mother. The point of view in this story is told in first person by Jean, the younger of the two sisters. Her perspective throughout the hardships really… 2y
grace.hartman …demonstrates how important a mother/father figure is for young children. The author of this novel uses genius first-person techniques by showcasing a sense of innocence and wit in the narration. Seeing extreme hardship and struggle through the eyes of a child is an incredible way to demonstrate the point of view of this novel, leaving the story to be tear-jerking and very heartwarming. 2y
grace.hartman If you like books that have just the right amount of wit for a touching and tear-jerking story, then I highly recommend this adorable and heart-warming novel. 2y
MissYaremcio I love Jeannette Walls and I am glad that you are enjoying her as well! 6/6 2y

A easy, quick read that deals with some heavy topics relevant to what we hear on the news today. The difference between the news and the book is the main character‘s moral fortitude and positive attitude. I enjoyed being in her presence, and the book ended way too soon.

Exactly what you would expect from a Jeannette Walls novel. Although this book is fiction it read like her other two books. Sisters who have to navigate life with an often absent mom who is dealing with mental health issues. I enjoyed the first half of the book but the second half was just ok for me. It was also fairly predictable. Loved the character Bean - it was nice to see a strong, fierce spirit inside of her while adults made bad decisions.

Started reading The Silver Star yesterday. Didn't get to far in but it is reading just like the other two Jeannette Walls books I've read. Interested to see how this book goes since the other two were memoirs and this one is fiction. I think it is going to be a fairly quick read (if I'm able to find the time to read).

Because I so loved her memoir "The Glass Castle," I was looking forward to this fictional work by Walls. I thought it started off strong and then quickly petered out to a faint whimper by the end. 2 stars

ErikasMindfulShelf I didn‘t love her memoir but loved her novel. 5y
KrystleTheBookSlayer I've heard mixed reviews on her fiction. I'm still curious about it, so I did pick up the book from a thrift store, I just havent read it yet. 5y

A nice departure from my post-apocalyptic run of reads... she really does tell great stories through the eyes of 12 year olds. A 1970s To Kill A Mockingbird?

Not as good as her memoirs although you can tell that she pulled from her own childhood experiences to put this novel together. Walls also narrated this audio book which was fine except that I felt she read the parts of Liz & Bean too young if that‘s possible.

Just finished this. It was pretty average. It covered a lot of issues —family secrets, mental illness, war, race relations, childhood neglect, tragedy. I liked the main character, Bean. She was a tough smart girl. I‘m looking forward to reading her other novel, The Glass Castle.

S3V3N I read the Glass Castle and I really liked it. 6y

#DecDays Silver Star + Bell Jar = #SilverBells ive only read one holiday cozy and it was probably the WORST book I‘ve ever read 😖😫😬so I had to get somewhat “creative”for today‘s prompt. Silver Star is a coming of age story in the 70‘s and Bell Jar is a #feministclassic set in 1950‘s NYC.

I read this after The Glass Castle, which I also loved. In a way, I wish I read Jeanette Walls' novels prior to her memoir because I already see the connection to her childhood in her novels. She's a great writer, easy reads for sure, which is definitely necessary sometimes!

I liked this book in a lot of ways. The main character was really my favorite thing in this and the story was definitely compelling. I just felt like it needed more. There's a part of me that doesn't feel like I completely get what the point was in the end. I almost wanted more to bring it all together. I think she needed some more unity in her writing. But, overall I liked this one and would recommend it!

This is not a WOW, run out & read right now but it is a simple, solid story. If you're familiar with Glass Castle then parts of this novel may seem autobiographical; Southern mom, artist, free spirit not really much for mothering...sisters who are wise beyond their years coming of age in 1970's south Virginia. Town Big Shot behaving badly, small minded individuals, breaking barriers and learning acceptance. More importantly- fulfills challenges❤️
