Interesting characters in a wonderfully real setting. By the end, I really felt like I had been to the Boundary Waters.

Shout in the Ruins | Kevin Powers

The best book I have read lately. The highest compliment I can offer is that the characters in this book live and breathe, and the words used to bring them to life are sheer poetry.

The best book I have read lately. The story of Sera and her servant Bhima was vivid and heartrending. The writing was both clear and poetic. The sequel is going on my TBR list immediately.

Gripping murder mystery/end of the world mashup. I plan to search out the sequels.

A short but very satisfying murder mystery by one of the masters of the genre. I really felt that I was at the English coast at Christmastime faced with a sudden death and deep family secrets.

Chilbury Ladies' Choir | Jennifer Ryan

Just finished his one. As a choir member myself, I really enjoyed the descriptions of music mixed together with an up close and personal view of the beginnings WWII through the eyes of the women of one English village.

Hubby is listening to this on his commute. Someone lent us the hardback, so I decided to race him to the end. I win! This isn't the best Reacher ever, but it sure enough kept me turning pages. I read this one wildly out of order, but it's a flashback to Reacher's Army career, and a fun reminder of a pre-internet/cellphone world.

So I went to an estate sale and the library in one day. And I am already in the middle of Lee Child's "Night School" Sigh. So many books, so little time...

I really enjoyed the tapestry this author wove, using a current case of harassment and two cold murder cases to tell a complex story of two people trying to get answers and solve the mysteries surrounding the crimes that touched their lives. Top notch storytelling and unforgettable characters make this one a keeper.

Forgotten Garden | Kate Morton

Just finished this complex, multigenerational, enthralling story. There are a lot of storylines to keep up with, but Morton manages to keep them all moving. Not great literature, but lots of fun.

The Silver Star: A Novel | Jeannette Walls

This was an enjoyable story with interesting characters. I'd give it about 3.5 stars. It just wasn't as riveting as "The Glass Castle."

A good day for a book on the porch. Lots of secrets in this southern mystery!

Bookworm84 This book proves that you can have all the elements of a southern gothic mystery and still write a deadly boring book. 7y

Time travel! Romance! Suspense! I really enjoyed this very unusual and fascinating story. I hear there is a prequel, but I am now in the club of those who want a sequel!

This was fluff. Very entertaining fluff. It reminded me of the first few Shopaholic books, which from me is very high praise.

Not nearly as gothic cover implies, but It was hard to dislike a mystery set largely in a used bookstore. Some really quirky characters and cool last minute twists. A solid 3. 5 stars.

Pickpick

I would give this book a solid 3.5 stars. McCrumb knows the region and its history, and it shows. The story of a female sheriff having to preside over an execution is based on the history of America's last public hanging. I enjoyed this journey to another time, but I miss the ballad novels. Bring back Nora Bonesteel!!!

Double Bind | Chris Bohjalian

Pickpick

A daring book by a gifted author. Could have been executed better, but I will remember this book for a long time. I have enjoyed Bohjalian's historical fiction very much, and I was engrossed by this foray into the land of psychological thrillers. Some will feel betrayed by this book, but you can't claim it is predictable.

Day After Night: A Novel | Anita Diamant
post image
Pickpick

After suffering through some mediocre books,it was wonderful to find a wonderful historical novel based closely on actual events. Diamanté put me right in the middle of a detention camp for Jews in Palestine right after the end World War II. We learn about the horrific past experiences and current struggles of four women as they try to live their lives again after losing everyone they loved.
Great story with memorable characters.
