Ottessa Moshfegh meets David Cronenberg in this viciously funny and terrifying debut novel about a love triangle so toxic that it breaks the order of the universe and unleashes a literal monster. Remy and Alicia, a couple of insecure 30-something service workers, are not particularly happy together. But they are bound by a shared obsession with Jen, a beautiful former co-worker of Remys who now seems to be following her bliss as a globe-trotting jewelry designer. In and outside the bedroom, Remy and Alicia's entire relationship revolves around fantasies of Jen, whose every Instagram caption, outfit, and new age mantra they know by heart. Imagine their confused excitement when they run into Jen, in the flesh, and she invites them on a surfing trip to the Hamptons with her wealthy boyfriend and their group. Once there, Remy and Alicia try to fit into Jens exalted social circle, but violent desires and class resentment bubble beneath the surface of this beachside paradise, and before long disturbing things start to happen. Prepare for sleepwalking attacks, stalking, murder, text messages from the afterlife, a visitor from another dimension, and more. Part millennial social comedy, part psychedelic horror, and all wildly entertaining, A Touch of Jen is a sly, unflinching examination of the hidden drives that lurk just outside the frame of our carefully curated selves.

I‘m about a third of the way through this odd duck. I don‘t quite know what to make of it but I‘m enjoying the oddity thus far. 🧐

Have you seen the film “Sorry to Bother You”? Then you‘ll get the vibe of this book, which is a millennial lit fic social commentary for the first 75% before morphing into something weirder with a paranormal creature. Remy and Alicia are deeply unlikeable but also (as a millennial) deeply relatable and many of the incidents were funny in a cringe recognizable way. The horror build up worked for me and the ending felt inevitable and perfect.

Here‘s my review for a book I bailed on. This was disappointing but when I started reading this book, I wasn‘t sure if I was going to like it or not but I wanted to give it a chance. I‘m starting to think that weird books are not for me. I‘ve tried reading weird books before and I haven‘t liked them so maybe I shouldn‘t read any more of them.

Here‘s my #libraryholds from Libby. Tonight, I cancelled them because I found them on Audible and I‘m tired of waiting for my holds to come in. After I get them on Audible, I can read them whenever I want and avoid the wait times on Libby.

I placed a hold for this book on Libby. I won a physical ARC of this book from a Goodreads giveaway but I want to listen to this book on audio. I‘m just waiting for my hold to come in. I pulled the book off my bookshelf and read the first chapter. I don‘t know what to think about the first chapter but I still want to read this book. It sounds interesting but I don‘t know if I‘m going to like it or not.

Among its many flaws, I can‘t really read this book in public because it has a butt on it.

Aimeesue I'm sorry, but that made me laugh. You're absolutely right - no way should that be read that in public! 1y

I read a spoilery review on Amazon, so I knew to expect a strange ending to this darkly funny debut novel. It‘s slow-build social horror with a paranormal finish.

Alicia and Remy are service workers in Brooklyn, who have an Instagram obsession with Remy‘s former co-worker. Jen is daring, beautiful, and carefree. After several aborted attempts to get back in her circle, Remy finally scores an invite to surf…that‘s when things start to get weird!

allureofbeauty I really want to read this one. 2y

3-15-22: My 25th finished book of 2022! Remy and Alicia are service workers who live together with their roommate, Jake. They have an obsession with Remy‘s old coworker, Jen. They follow her Instagram posts and role play with her as the lead. After running into Jen, they are invited to a surf weekend in the Hamptons. Things don‘t go well and from this a horror story unfolds. This book was bizarre. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣2️⃣5️⃣

Beth Morgan has created a book about obsession that is completely insane but so damn entertaining!

Remy and Alicia can't stop obsessing over Remy's ex co-worker, Jen. The awkwardness of the two main characters and the lengths they go to in order to include Jen in their personal lives is cringe worthy and just adds to the overall foreboding feeling this book causes.

Such a great read- weird, but great. ☺

Someone wrote a review where they describe this book as David Lynch meets Franz Kafka for the Instagram age. Perfect description. I loved this book. I thought it was smart and funny. This book is about a toxic couple who are obsessed with an instagram influencer. This book starts off as innocently weird and then takes a surreal Cronenberg turn. I can‘t wait to read more from this author!!

Leftcoastzen I liked it too! Snarky and wacky. 2y

Remy & Alicia ,roommates & lovers are both incredibly obsessed w/ Jen, a former co-worker of Remy‘s w/ a carefully crafted Instagram feed.Amazingly, they run into Jen IRL & are surprised when she asked them both to go surfing in the Hamptons.Seems like a fantasy come true ?Very funny writing & sharp social commentary peppered through this novel made me laugh, but then, there‘s a monster & weird roomie with a phone who‘s ring tone is baby crying🤔

Ruthiella I‘m glad you liked it. And the end worked for you? I couldn‘t link it to the rest of the book...it wasn‘t bad but it came out of nowhere for me. Like, I could have accepted that Remy killed every one and hallucinated the monster. But I think the reader was supposed to accept the monster as fact.🤔 2y
Leftcoastzen @Ruthiella it was a little crazy ! I agree with you that it was out there , if there‘s something I missed about it , I didn‘t want to spend time figuring it out😁I had a thought towards the old saying you kill what you love , or obsessive behavior can consume what you love ? But I enjoyed most of it.🤔😂 2y
Ruthiella I totally loved the obsession with Jen and the awkwardness of Remy and Alicia and how they over thought EVERYTHING! I also was fascinated at how Alicia‘s life was “better” or more in line with her aspirations at least, when she began to really BE Jen. 2y
Leftcoastzen I did too ! 2y

hip girl lit takes a troma twist.

Never before has he touched her feet, and their size surprises him. The word that flits across his mind to describe them is adult.

I managed a fourth book, just under the wire, for the #SuperSeptember readathon that ends today. The tagged book was a weird one...I‘m not sure if I “got” it? I loved the first 2/3 which are awkward and creepy. Remy and Alicia are a little too obsessed with a former coworker, Jen, and her instagram page. They are most comfortable when pretending to be someone they aren‘t...but then who are they really? But the last third was too out there for me.

Ruthiella Thanks for hosting @EadieB and thanks always to @Andrew65 for setting these readathons up for our enjoyment. 😀 3y
Leftcoastzen I‘ve got Jen in my hold line at the library, not so sure about wanting to read it & your review is making me think maybe not .😄 3y
EadieB You‘re welcome! Congrats 🎊 for finishing your 4th book 📖 for the readathon. @Andrew65 always has great ideas 💡 which promote having fun while reading! 3y

Trust me when I tell you that you will not see the twists coming in this novel! It starts out as the story of Remy and Alicia, a couple who is obsessed with the social media posts of Jen, a woman who is a former co-worker of Remy‘s. A chance meeting leads to an awkward surfing trip with Jen and her friends. From there things get darker and stranger until we are in a straight up horror story. There is plenty of dark humor as well. A fun read!

I liked how toxic it was, to be obsessed with a single person or idea so much that who you are and who you have in your life doesn‘t matter. Until of course it is all gone. When you lose everything, or just the one thing that makes sense then the world tilts and you‘d do anything to right it again.

Also….a serial killer monster and an obsession with a girl who doesn‘t seem to shower much and has adult braces? Sweet. 😂😀

catiewithac I want to read this! 3y
