The Girls in the Stilt House
The Girls in the Stilt House: A Novel | Kelly Mustian
Set in 1920s Mississippi, this debut Southern novel weaves a beautiful and harrowing story of two teenage girls cast in an unlikely partnership through murderperfect for readers of Where the Crawdads Sing and If the Creek Don't Rise. Ada promised herself she would never go back to the Trace, to her hard life on the swamp and her harsh father. But now, after running away to Baton Rouge and briefly knowing a different kind of life, she finds herself with nowhere to go but back home. And she knows there will be a price to pay with her father. Matilda, daughter of a sharecropper, is from the other side of the Trace. Doing what she can to protect her family from the whims and demands of some particularly callous locals is an ongoing struggle. She forms a plan to go north, to pack up the secrets she's holding about her life in the South and hang them on the line for all to see in Ohio. As the two girls are drawn deeper into a dangerous world of bootleggers and moral corruption, they must come to terms with the complexities of their tenuous bond and a hidden past that links them in ways that could cost them their lives.

This was set in 1920s Mississippi. Ada, the daughter of a trapper who lives in a stilt house in the swamp and Matilda, the daughter of a sharecropper must learn to rely on each other in order to survive.

The dual storylines of Ada and Matilda in 1920s Mississippi is sometimes hard to read, but I enjoyed reading about one of my favorite time periods from a completely different perspective. These girls have to work together to survive the harsh realities of life. Would like to read more from this author. The audiobook/narrator was well-done. 4⭐️

Enjoyable, heartfelt read to start out the new year with. 💚

I am a sucker for books set in the South. Fans of Where the Crawdads Sing will enjoy this one. The tales of two girls, both different, yet more similar than they realize, is woven together beautifully in this book.

My most recent “Books for Tea” surprise from #TheBookDrop! “Murder breaks through the racial divide that separates two teenage girls in this Southern historical debut.” It sounds intriguing - has anyone read this one yet?? #bookmail

Laughterhp What is books for tea?! 1y
ICantImReading @Laughterhp oh it‘s so fun!! It‘s The Book Drop‘s book subscription service. They have different ones (books for tea include historical/contemporary/literary fiction, books for coffee are mystery/thriller, books for bubbly are romance, books for elixir are fantasy). I have the tea/coffee blend! Each month they send you a surprise paperback book in your selected genre 🥰 1y
Laughterhp Oooh that sounds fun! Not that I need another book subscription service 🤣 1y
ICantImReading @Laughterhp LOL same, it was my Christmas gift to myself! 😂😂 1y

Book 96
The Girls in the Stilt House is a novel about two girls trying to escape the harsh, dangerous-for-girls' conditions in the Mississippi swamps in the 1920s. Organized so that each character's story is told separately prior to their shared story, contributed to it only becoming compelling half-way through. The characters could have been more likable, especially Matilda. I won't jump on Mustian's next novel. 3.5 stars

Ada and Matilda‘s stories were heartbreaking but also wonderfully hopeful. I enjoyed how this book wove their stories together. I‘m looking forward to discussing it tomorrow.
