Dream Girl | Laura Lippman
29 posts | 35 read | 18 to read
Following up on her acclaimed and wildly successful New York Times bestseller Lady in the Lake, Laura Lippman returns with a dark, complex tale of psychological suspense with echoes of Misery involving a novelist, incapacitated by injury, who is plagued by mysterious phone calls. After being injured in a freak accident, novelist Gerry Andersen lies in a hospital bed in his glamorous but sterile apartment, isolated from the busy world he can see through his windows, utterly dependent on two women he barely knows: his young assistant and a night nurse whose competency he questions. But Gerry is also beginning to question his own competency. As he moves in and out of dreamlike memories and seemingly random appearances of a persistent ex-girlfriend at his bedside, he fears he may be losing his grip on reality, much like his mother who recently passed away from dementia. Most distressing, he believes he's being plagued by strange telephone calls, in which a woman claiming to be the titular character of his hit novel Dream Girl swears she will be coming to see him soon. The character is completely fictitious, but no one has ever believed Gerry when he makes that claim. Is he the victim of a cruel prank--or is he actually losing his mind? There is no record of the calls according to the log on his phone. Could there be someone he has wronged? Is someone coming to do him harm as he lies helplessly in bed? Then comes the morning he wakes up next to a dead body--and realizes his nightmare is just beginning...

#SummerEndReadathon book 14
Dream Girl is a twisty turny story….with a plot that brings Stephen king‘s misery to mind. I did enjoy the story, but I think it would have been better as a physical or ebook rather than an audiobook. The ending left me confused as to what really happened. 🤔🤔. (Was it real? Was it a dream? Was it a story he wrote or did his nurse/niece/ex-wife write it?).

A bookish-book which reminded me a bit of The Plot, with the focus on writers and the book industry. Gerry is an aging author who has been injured after a fall. He is confined to his bed without much to do but remember his past and interact with his hired caretakers. There are exes and lots of memories about his mother and absent father. There are twists and no characters are really likable. Overall, I was slightly entertained but can‘t recommend.

This is a dark story about how ones men's actions cause him to rely on others as well as how his last behavior and treatment of women are his downfall. This is indeed a MeToo book and it's message is very clear, that a reckoning is coming for people who continue to.abuse their privilege and power. Very well done. It was dark and sinister. 4 Stars.

I was excited to read this based on the Misery connection. Don't be like me though and assume that means it will be a good read.

I'm being generous with the so-so rating. This is a mediocre mystery with way too many plot holes. The randomly dropped literary references were fun though.

To be fair, I've never read this author before so other books by her may be better.

An obvious shoutout to Misery but this didn‘t have the King magic.
I found wayyyy too many plot holes to enjoy this book.

A thriller-mystery which has elements of Rear Window and Misery. A writer is bedridden with an injury and is not sure he can trust his caretaker or his own memory. Lippman is excellent as always.

Even though I‘m a Marylander, I‘m just not a fan of Lippman‘s style of storytelling. In this one the villains were over the top borderlining ridiculous. I didn‘t see what all the flashback scenes added to the story except the main character lamenting on his 3 ex-wives. The ending was sloppy & it just sort of ended. It wasn‘t a pan because it was interesting enough, the life of a writer, & there was some suspense.

This twisty thriller from one of my favorite authors tells the story of Gerry Andersen, a prize-winning novelist in his 60s, known most widely for his critically & commercially successful novel Dream Girl. Now Gerry is back in Baltimore, his hometown, coping with the death of his mother and his seeming inability to write, when things take an unexpected turn for the worse, and then some. A genuinely surprising ending left me rethinking everything.

𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗺𝗮𝗻's 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹 is a witty, hilarious, & deftly-plotted mystery with horror elements. ⁣

Narcissism & misogyny have landed author Gerry Andersen in a predicament. He's never really 𝘴𝘦𝘦n women. Is it too late for a self-obsessed louse to learn from his mistakes? The shocking & ingenious conclusion is satisfying. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⁣

A celebrated novelist is injured, bed-bound and requiring in home care, when odd, frightening things start happening. A bit of a Rear Window idea, but not quite, this novel is half-baked. There‘s some really good stuff here, but it feels like an early draft and was unsatisfying. I found my attention drifting easily.

This is the kind of book I read in one day, just to get to the end. We have a writer laid up in a bed in his apartment with scary stuff happening to him. I won‘t be able to recall the plot in a week. This book screams beach read.

There‘s definitely a slow-burn build to this story. I can understand how some are impatient for things to progress more quickly but if you‘ll stick with it, the payoff is delicious and a lot of fun. Lippman‘s work always has a glamorous, old money feel to it, and here it made Gerry a more interesting character. He‘s not likable at all but his conceit and refusal to elevate his thinking are 100% part of this character‘s story. I loved it.

This is my first experience with Lippman‘s writing- & I‘m sure it won‘t be my last! I enjoyed this thriller with its many references to other books, films & tv shows. Narrator Gerry Anderson is a writer- one who has achieved success. But he‘s also rather unlikable in attitude & treatment of women & relationships. This does bog down the beginning of the book which at first feels a bit Misery-esque. But the surprise ending more than compensates!

EadieB Is Gerry the victim of a cruel prank or is he actually losing his mind? This is a slow moving story which I found hard to get into. It was not easy to care about any of the characters either. Good writing but more action is needed in this story. A brief visit by Detective Tess Monaghan from Lippman's series was interesting. Also enjoyed the many mentions from movie and books. 3y

BAIL! I read over 100 pages and it was just such a bore. The premise was good but I kept waiting for it to get good and it just never did. Ive never been a big fan of Lippman so others may like it. In any event, it comes out Jul 1, 2021.
