The Chicken Sisters
The Chicken Sisters | KJ Dell'Antonia
A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK "A charming, hilarious, feel-good story about the kind of bonds & rivalries only sisters can share. Also, a great present for your sister for the holidays!!"--Reese Witherspoon Three generations. Two chicken shacks. One recipe for disaster. In tiny Merinac, Kansas, Chicken Mimi's and Chicken Frannie's have spent a century vying to serve up the best fried chicken in the state--and the legendary feud between their respective owners, the Moores and the Pogociellos, has lasted just as long. No one feels the impact more than thirty-five-year-old widow Amanda Moore, who grew up working for her mom at Mimi's before scandalously marrying Frank Pogociello and changing sides to work at Frannie's. Tired of being caught in the middle, Amanda sends an SOS to Food Wars, the reality TV restaurant competition that promises $100,000 to the winner. But in doing so, she launches both families out of the frying pan and directly into the fire. . . The last thing Brooklyn-based organizational guru Mae Moore, Amanda's sister, wants is to go home to Kansas. But when her career implodes, helping the fading Mimi's look good on Food Wars becomes Mae's best chance to reclaim the limelight--even if doing so pits her against Amanda and Frannie's. Yet when family secrets become public knowledge, the sisters must choose: Will they fight with each other, or for their heritage?

I read this book slowly over many lunch breaks at work. A Reese‘s Book Club pick. It‘s a pretty familiar story one sister moves to the big city the other stays in the small town. Big city returns , rivalries and immature behaviour occur egged on by the producer of a reality show. I quite liked it - in between a pick and a so-so - 👍💚🐉

My first reaction was, there is so much fighting. Things were taken too far and it was quite ridiculous. Then I thought it was wrapping up because they were talking about announcing the winner the next day. So I thought maybe the book would be salvageable with the ending. I was at the 52% mark.. and I really had a Winnie-the-Pooh "Oh bother" moment. Ending: All that really traumatizing stuff? Yeah let's pretend that didn't happen. 1.5/5

This was a nice fluffy family drama set in my original home state of Kansas. It was entertaining and a nice easy read. Not extremely memorable, but it did knock out my prompt “About Sisters” for #Booked2022 as well as #SamoanSun and #SpicyMustard for #Pantone2022

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫🎧 Sisters play out a generations long fried chicken feud on a food reality show. At one point I hated almost all of the adult characters. Everything came together at the end but it ended abruptly. This would have benefited from an epilogue.

I finally finished a physical book! I enjoyed this book, which loosely based on two sisters from Kansas who had a falling out and split their chicken restaurant into two competing restaurants. This grudge was perpetuated over generations and the book is centered around Mae and Amanda and a tv show called Food Wars.

It was a fun fairly light book and a good time. Just what I needed right now!

This was just so charming! I thought it captured the dynamic between sisters so well and brought a believable backstory and plenty of angst to work through, all with a side of fried chicken. I had to make sure to get some Nashville hot chicken while I was reading.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Two sisters are pitted against each other in an episode of Food Wars. This book was like reading a terrible reality tv show. I wanted to like this book because I enjoy those terrible, predictable reality tv shows but I could not stay invested in the storyline. The behind the scenes of recording parts were great. Drama between the sisters was genuine and frustrating. The social issues the author tried to squeezed in were a turn off.

This story felt like it toooook forever. Reality show theme drama but felt like 700 pages instead of 350 to get the story told. Also, unplanned second title this week featuring hoarding so that may have played a factor in why it felt so slow...?

I like that reading is included on this list, 9 pages seems kind of light 🤣 but audio books can overlap on a few of these and provide fuel for the 7 minutes of laughter ✅ I LOVED The Chicken Sisters! A family drama with estranged sisters in a small town full of misunderstandings and assumptions, you cheer for everyone and I recommend it ( you will want to eat fried chicken)

Johanna414 Lol could we make it 90 pages of a book? 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A decades-long chicken restaurant feud comes to a head on network television. Family secrets spill. So much sadness. So much drama. Maybe a little too much, but I suppose that‘s life sometimes. Unfortunately, I didn‘t care for these underdeveloped characters and couldn‘t really pick a side. The story could‘ve been reined in a bit, but the predictable happy ending at least felt right.

Cinfhen Don‘t know why but this book does not appeal to me at all 🤷🏼‍♀️but I still LOVE that you tag me on all of your reviews xxxxx 3y

I enjoyed this one much more than I expected. It's not my normal genre, but it was a sweet little story. I didn't always love Mae or Amanda. At times I hoped someone would walk up and turn the garden hose on them. But they grew on me, and the ending was really satisfying.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this book!! Mae and Amanda are sisters who have a difficult relationship and are very different from one another. Mimi‘s and Frannie‘s are two fried chicken restaurants in their same small town that were originally run by two sisters. Amanda gets the tc show Food Wars to come to town for the 2 restaurants to compete. Relationships are changed and people grow during the competition.

Well interesting story and I love fried chicken, but sadly the books about 100 pages to long. At 341 pages it was dragging at the end. Nice story about family dynamics hard to believe everything lined up so nice. It‘s was a Sunshine Book Club read and usually Reese picks great books this one about 2 stars

A Kansas family has been at odds since the late 1800s. The issue? Fried chicken? Who makes the best? Chicken Mimi‘s or Chicken Frannie‘s? This has been a generational family feud for this family. In present day, Amanda applies to “Food Wars,” a reality show that features culinary rivalries. With a prize of $100,000 both owners accept the challenge but the show becomes a comic disaster.

Reynosa8701 I didn‘t care for this book! 3y

This was very entertaining. Sometimes I rooted for Amanda & other times for Mae (but always for Andy*) & I think the author did a great job of fleshing out all her characters. Even those without much screen time seemed very real to me. If this poor family had better communication skills they'd have saved themselves a ton of grief but I was happy to be along for the ride & appreciated how everything worked out in the end. *All the men were ⬇️

bookandbedandtea pretty awesome, for a change, and I would be all over Kenneth and Patrick's story if it existed. 3y

A question for those of you who participate in A-Z challenges: do you only count the first usable word in a title, after things like "an" or "the," or do you allow the use of any word in the title? For instance, I'm reading the tagged book and my first thought is that it had to count for "C" but if any of you already had a "C" book would you use it count for "S"?
Thanks in advance!

TheNerdyProfessor I would only use the first word after "A" or "the". So basically, this would be "C" in my mind or it wouldn't count. But I think you can set up your own parameters how you like! 3y
bookandbedandtea @TheNerdyProfessor That's my instinct- to only go by the first word- but was very curious to know what others do. Thanks for weighing in! 3y

I thought this would be a light hearted chick lit book but it wasn‘t. The main characters were complex and down right despicable sometimes. I think there was too many subplots. My favorite characters were secondary characters, but I liked the growth of the main characters. Read for 6 readathons 375 pts #teamreadnosedreindeer @StayCurious

Total 3,234

LinesUponAPage I‘ve found that all the books that Reese Witherspoon picks are never just Chic-lit, they are always deep and sometimes very painfully traumatic. Is this one that way too? 3y
TEArificbooks @Lifeisasnap I think so. The feuding sisters were traumatized in their youth and both handled it differently which led to resentment and jealousies. 3y

Boom! I‘ve read all 12 books picked by Reese Witherspoon for her 2020 bookclub, and this is one of my favorites. Although it‘s not a Christmas book, It has the feel-good vibes that I prioritize this month. Sometimes those sorts of books focus primarily on romance, but this one was about family. I loved it.
