Trans: A Memoir | Juliet Jacques

Moving memoir and insightful examination of transgender politics Six weeks before sex reassignment surgery (SRS), I am obliged to stop taking my hormones. I suddenly feel very differently about my forthcoming operation. In July 2012, aged thirty, Juliet Jacques underwent sex reassignment surgerya process she chronicled with unflinching honesty in a serialised national newspaper column. Trans tells of her life to the present moment: a story of growing up, of defining yourself, and of the rapidly changing world of gender politics. Fresh from university, eager to escape a dead-end job, she launches a career as a writer in a publishing culture dominated by London cliques and still figuring out the impact of the Internet. She navigates the treacherous waters of a world where, even in the liberal and feminist media, transgender identities go unacknowledged, misunderstood or worse. Yet through art, film, music, politics and football, Jacques starts to become the person she had only imagined, and begins the process of transition. Interweaving the personal with the political, her memoir is a powerful exploration of debates that comprise trans politics, issues which promise to redefine our understanding of what it means to be alive. Revealing, honest, humorous, and self-deprecating, Trans includes an epilogue with Sheila Heti, author of How Should a Person Be?, in which Jacques and Heti discuss the cruxes of writing and identity. From the Hardcover edition.

Sorry for the rushed and not very beautiful collage image here! For this week‘s #integrateyourshelf I realised how few books by trans authors I‘ve ever read, fiction or non fiction. I think it‘s just these five unless I‘ve forgotten something. It‘s so depressingly easy even someone who tries to be a feminist to hear so much about trans people but almost nothing from them. I‘m looking forward to gathering some recs and working on that blind spot!

I can‘t recommend this enough. It combines memoir and cultural history seamlessly, goes beyond a lot of stereotypical writing about trans ppl. Juliet has created something so fascinating and useful to both cis and trans people so vulnerably, honestly and expertly. Coincidentally, she grew up exactly where I did and went to my school for two years so I felt so much like this could have been my life if my body had been assigned differently at birth.

Well I‘m back in London and it‘s odd, but I am glad to be here. I‘ve come to Foyles to give them some money and support them reopening. I‘ve never seen it so empty, or had this easy a time getting a seat in the cafe! They‘ve got very rigorous cleaning distancing and contact tracing happening and it‘s almost deserted so it‘s a nice place to spend time.

Finishing this up now!

What a great book. Part memoir, part trans history and cultural commentary. If we had known each other, I feel like Juliet and I would have gotten along quite well. We were born around the same time and had so many similar interests/thoughts.

Refreshing end to 2018 reading.

Total time for today. Had a long work day! I managed to read a bit before and after work though.

That puts me at about 6:20 so far. The library is closed tomorrow so I will have the day to myself to continue reading this book in peace.

Currently reading before the fancy library in the next county over starts charging me for it 😂

Immediately enjoying this a lot because of our similar music and entertainment preferences. This memoir began while writing an article about her sex reassignment surgery.

I read this book on the app Pigeonhole which delivers a 20-30 min section of a book every day.
"What if we're not trapped in the wrong body but trapped in the wrong society?"
First couple chapters were rough for me but I'm so glad I pushed through and read the full book. There is a lot of great discussion about gender politics and representation in the media/social media. I also really enjoyed the feminism discussions.

arlenefinnigan Loved that book. Only realised when I read it that she was at Manchester Uni at the same time as me and is a friend of a friend. Fully LOL'ed at the exchange where Joe asks if she's gonna stop supporting Norwich when she transitions. "Why would I stop supporting Norwich?" "Because they're shit?" ? 7y
mhillis I like the Pigeonhole app! Haven't seen many people on Litsy using it. 7y

"How were things with your family?‘ I asked.
‘It took a while,‘ she replied. ‘Once they realised it was either this or death, it got easier."

Did you know that those identifying as trans* or non-conforming gender have a suicide attempt rate 10x higher than the general population? The high attempt rate does not correlate with a trans* person's identity, rather it correlates with how the trans* person is treated. http://bit.ly/2f2UrPW #loveislove
