This is going to be a very painful review for me to write. I am a very public and proud sally rooney hater. I think she is pretentious and boring. That being said, I love this book. It might actually be one of my favorite books. It‘s weirdly relatable, I actually want to buy my own copy and read it again and take notes. I think if I could only read this book for the rest of my life I would be happy. Craziness

Wow - that was quick! I had not realised how faithful the TV show was to the book. Much of the dialogue seemed familiar and it was difficult not to picture the two lead actors as Connell and Marianne.
Very much in the vein of a classic love story with its miscommunication and flawed characters. I do truly hope they finally come together and live happily ever after. I am sure the book also has its flaws but I loved it.

FINALLY got myself around to reading a Sally Rooney book, and okay, I get the hype, for the most part. Connell and Marianne felt so real, even though we really only see them in vignettes, and I was so happy to see them finally grow and accept themselves by the end of the book. The best book ever? No. But still pretty damn good. #contemporaryfiction #literaryfiction

Its follows the relationship between 2 people who individually struggle with self love and mental health. Yet they always see the other as this beautiful aspirational character. And this combination of self loafing + admiration + inability to be vulnerable just leads to miscommunication n missing out on each other

It captures the nuances of experiencing great fear great pain and great joy all at the same time that is the human experience

i am gonna be honest, this book isn't for me. The characters were misunderstanding each other at every scene. they didn't even knew how to communicate properly and the there were so many time laps like the author could have done so much better with this storyline this book was realistic, among the mental health issue and everything which i appreciate but the author could have done so much better with their backstory and this storyline.

The only thought I had after finishing this book was: “please get away from each other and seek competent help.” This relationship was toxic af, and I get that that is the point, but it was done poorly and felt romanticized. ⭐️⭐️

yourangel i thought the same also i really wasn‘t comfortable with the huge time gaps like i understand that was the style of the book but i just felt the relationship went to different extremes so randomly and both extremes were so dysfunctional its like their whole relationship is built on toxicity loll 4mo

I kept hoping it would get better, I‘d find something in either character to like, or that something would happen, but it never did. This just didn‘t work for me at all.

This book kind of irritated me. It started out as a pretty good love story and I was really enjoying it but then it starts to drag and the main characters complete lack of competent communication made me wanted to slap them at some points. The ending…really? Almost considered this book a waste of time. 😕

There is something about NORMAL PEOPLE by Sally Rooney that reminds me about a few things at once. One of them is the "in the moment" writing in the screenplay of Greta Gerwig's LADY BIRD where each scene felt like a moment in the protagonist's life instead of a result of potential build-up...(continued in comments)

nathandrake1997 ....Similarly, every chapter in NORMAL PEOPLE opens directly amidst a moment, as if the world Rooney has crafted continues to exist beyond the reach of her pen.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....At first glance, while glossing through the promotional material of the book, one can easily misinterpret NORMAL PEOPLE as a love story. After all, everything about the promotional material, from the cover art to the blurb to the various snippets found all over the internet to the trailer of the Tv Series adaptation screams "star-crossed lovers", when in reality, the book is anything but that.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....Yes, it is about two people. Yes, it is about them sharing experiences together that are usually interpreted in a romantic context. Yes, sex plays an integral part in the narrative. Yes, love, or rather the fragility of love as an emotion is one of the key thematic and emotional undercurrents of the book.... 8mo
See All 17 Comments
nathandrake1997 ....But the book is anything but a love story, or rather, anything but a love story in a conventional sense.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....The two protagonists, Connell and Marianne, drift in and out of each other's lives over a period of four years, from 2011 to 2015. The relationship that the two of them share is quite emotionally impulsive in nature. There are times when they awkwardly exchange a nod while there are also times when they end up sleeping together.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....But both of them, in their own subjective ways, refuse to ground the connection they share into something definite. This at times causes a source of frustration for the people around them, but in a way, one cant help but empathize with the existential ambiguity of the relationship shared by the protagonists because they are in a juncture of life where they can barely make sense of the life they individually want to lead.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....let alone the life they probably want to share with someone else.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....This impulsive existential ambiguity in a way becomes the defining trait of the narrative timeline Rooney chooses to frame the protagonists' lives in. Each chapter starts at a particular moment in the protagonists' lives.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....At times, it is multiple months from the previous chapter, at times it is a few weeks from the previous chapter and during one instance it is barely five minutes from the previous chapter. Time also operates at an impulsive rhythm in Rooney's prose.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....Another interesting narrative device Rooney uses in the book is in the way she chooses to flesh out the protagonists' lives and the relationship they share. Throughout the book, Conell and Marianne meet other people and it is through their relationship with these "other" people that both Connell and Marianne and the relationship they share are fleshed out.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....What Connell and Marianne mean to each other is conveyed when they are apart from each other, or rather when they are emotionally invested in someone else. At first glance, this might sound cliched and generic. But Rooney's refreshingly anecdotal writing prevents the prose from slipping into a quagmire of saccharine.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....At turns witty, at turns heartbreaking, but the kind that never loses its sharpness, Rooney's prose is like one of those knives that manages to slice effortlessly through both butter and meat, leaving glorious layers open for display in its wake.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....Connell and Marianne's relationship is one that is an uphill climb to get invested in and in a way that makes sense, because that is how not only romantic, but human relationships in general are.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 .....A lot of times, one can't really make sense of why does a certain person mean the world to them, even though the relationship they share with said person probably isn't positive in a conventional sense. It is this existential dilemma about human relationships that Rooney attempts to explore in NORMAL PEOPLE.... 8mo
nathandrake1997 .....This write-up feels like it is going nowhere, rambling on and on about something or the other, at times talking in circles about the same point, at times meandering on tangents embarked randomly upon. But, in a way, that's what reading this novel feels like..... 8mo
nathandrake1997 .....In fact I am kind of hesitant to call this a novel. Or maybe what the "novel" as an artform means from a literary gatekeeper's perspective..... 8mo
nathandrake1997 ....Just like some of my favourite literature in recent years, the writing is fragmented, intentionally rough around the edges, akin to shards unafraid to pierce one's skin at moments and leave an indelible impression. It has its rough edges, but the sharpness nevertheless is intact, hence I am rather hesitant to dismiss them as flaws. On the contrary, if nothing, they add to the reading experience. 8mo

I know alot of people really love this book. I had very high expectations but I just didn't love it. I just didn't believe the relationship, why couldn't he get over this weird anxiety about being with her?? Didn't make sense to me, I felt like he took what HE wanted from her. He kept telling her that he loved her, but his actions said otherwise.

I know this book gets mixed reviews and I can definitely see why it wouldn't work for everyone, but I really enjoyed reading it. The writing style was different from what I'm used to but I found it really interesting. I would definitely read another Sally Rooney book. I would have liked if the side characters were a bit more fleshed out but all in all a good read.

misconception is that this book doesn‘t have any character development & it‘s just a book of two people in constant emotional circles. it‘s much more, it depicts the true outcome of miscommunication & misunderstanding decaying a relationship between two people that obviously love each other. these two flaws can drive any two apart but Connell & Marianne have a bound that will always magnetize each other back together. it‘s hauntingly beautiful

I watched the show 1st then read the book and I like them both equally which is rare! The show was quiet and slow, not a lot of dialogue, focused more on character development, which I love. Reading the book afterwards, I was surprised at how close the adaption was, and was happy to see more of the characters thoughts, which filled in a few blanks left out in the show. Not for everyone but it's worth the hype in my opinion. Glad I finally read it!

It was culture as class performance, literature fetishized for its ability to take educated people on false emotional journeys, so that they might afterward feel superior to the uneducated people whose emotional journeys they liked to read about. Even if the writer himself was a good person, and even if his book really was insightful, all books were ultimately marked as status symbols, and all writers participated to some degree in this marketing

Connell and Marianne are 2 people who are always drawn back together no matter how their relationship cracks over the years, it never breaks for good. the hardships of growing up, figuring yourself out, letting go of toxic family dynamics, mental health struggles. they go through it all together. I had a hard time putting this novel, about a relationship between two people from high school through college, down whenever I picked it up. I still can't decide if the on again, off again sometimes sexual relationship between Marianne and Connell is healthy, or if the ending is sad or happy. Maybe that's the point. They have a deep connection despite miscommunications but can't seem to stop abandoning each other. The writing is powerful, ⬇️

LitStephanie exploring how people often work out their demons through sexual relationships and how hard it is for young people to let go of horrible family dynamics, which they carry into sometimes poisonous interactions with lovers and friends. 13mo
merelybookish I loved this book and the miniseries based on it is good too. 13mo
LitStephanie @merelybookish good to know. I was worried the miniseries would just be gratuitous and focus only on the S&M stuff because it's TV. 13mo
