Snow White and Rose Red
Snow White and Rose Red | Patricia C Wrede
Snow White and Rose Red live on the edge of the forest that conceals the elusive border of Faerie. They know enough about Faerie lands and mortal magic to be concerned when they find two human sorcerers setting spells near the border. And when the kindly, intelligent black bear wanders into their cottage some months later, they realize the connection between his plight and the sorcery they saw in the forest. This romantic version of the classic fairy tale features an updated introduction by its editor, Terri Windling.

This was a perfectly enjoyable if very straightforward retelling of the classic fairy tale. I've always rather enjoyed this one, and in this version I liked the way Wrede included excerpts from the original at the beginning of each chapter. There was nothing groundbreaking here, but if you like fairy tales, this was a nice read. It also checked off several squares for various bingo cards, so I was able to score some last-minute points!!

#WeeklyForecast - November means getting back to some of my regularly scheduled reads haha I have DO enjoyed #Scarathlon and have read loads this month, but am ready to tackle some not-mysteries!! Currently reading the tagged, which is out of renewals at the library. Rosaline is October's #LMPBC book so it it top priority. The Wodehouse is actually one I haven't read so I am excited about that. Holdfast has been, unread, on my shelf since a ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) library discard sale in the late 90s 😂 It may be time to actually read it!! The next three are a Cinderella trilogy that has been on my TBR for quite a while, followed by a random Nora Roberts. Not sure how far through the pile I will get this week, but I'm excited to delve in!! This week is our final week of picking apples at the orchard, so things should somewhat calm down after that.

LauraBrook It makes me happy to see someone else still has unread books from the 90s on their tbr! 😆 (edited) 2y
TheAromaofBooks @LauraBrook - there is an outside chance that I read it when I very first bought it, but I definitely haven't read it since. Our library used to have an annual sale with all books for a quarter and I still seem to own a LOT of them! 😂 2y
Cinfhen Looking forward to #BookSpin day!! 2y
BookNAround @LauraBrook @TheAromaofBooks I still have some books I bought when I was in high school (my book problem is long-standing) on my tbr pile and I graduated in the late 80s. Clearly I‘ll never catch up at this point. 😂 2y

These #fairytaleretellings were among my first - the Faery Tale series edited by Terri Windling and Ellen Datlow dates from the 1990s and each tale played with time period and setting in interesting ways in relation to the original tale. It also set me up as a lifelong fan of the likes of Charles DeLint and Patricia Wrede 💕

I'm halfway through with this month's #travellingbook and it's been a bit of a slog. I think I would have really enjoyed this book--the Elizabethan period, the gentle romance--when I was younger, but it's not what I would pick out now.

This book is early entry into the (very tired imo) fairy tale retelling trend, part of the Fairy Tale series edited by Terri Windling. How do you feel about fairy tale retellings?
