I was awake early this morning, so I did I little internet troll and came across this beautiful poem. I love Mary Oliver.

This is my first Mary Oliver. What gorgeous poetry! Words perfect for harboring in the back of my memory and reflecting on. The kind of book that would be suited to taking on a hike or visiting a cabin in the forest, and the kind of book that makes me long to do those things. There were too many great poems to pick favorites.

I am so grateful for the prolific poetry of Mary Oliver. It means I can keep discovering new ways she found to show appreciation for the wonders of Nature.

Honestly, the first book of poetry I can remember enjoying. I actually saved 3 quotes which is rare for me. So even if you aren't a poetry person, give it a try. I also enjoyed the wiccan/witch vibes as in the worship of and respect for nature which i think is a little lost.
I enjoyed the imagery in Oliver‘s poetry. I also enjoyed the indistinct spirituality of her poetry, almost like the imaginings in her head, the nature around her, the unseen connection between those two things is a spirituality. I greatly enjoyed this collection, and I‘m excited to begin another of her collections.

70 pages of pure beauty! My first ever Mary Oliver and I can't wait to read more of her poetry, hopefully outdoors.
In pic: almond blossoms in my ancestral village, where I'm spending spring break.
When the wind blows
the grass
whistles and whispers
in myths and riddles
and not in our language
but one far older.
The sea is the sea is
always the sea.
These things
you can count on
as you walk about the world
happy or sad,
talky or silent, making
weapons, love, poems.
The briefest of fires.
But perhaps you‘re still sleeping. I
could wake you with a touch or a kiss.
But so could I shake the petals from
the wild rose which blossoms so silently
and perfectly, and I do not.
Calming Read in a calming place. Poetry needs to be present. It was timely.
As is typical of Mary Oliver, this collection included many poems about the natural world and being alone in nature. Wonderful, evocative language throughout makes this a pick. 4⭐️
#poemsbeforephones While there is sadness in this one regarding a cancer diagnosis, I love the descriptions of the fox‘s ‘feet of silk‘ and the snake‘s ‘empire of muscles‘.
#poemsbeforephones This was was hard to fit, so I hope everyone is able to read it. Like many of her poems, it has to be taken as a whole to get the effect. I love the last part - patience is sometimes needed to get to the magical part.
#poemsbeforephones A great reminder to take the time to look around you today and maybe be dazzled.
#poemsbeforephones I‘ve been on a major decluttering project over the long weekend and haven‘t read much at all. Finally, I‘m able to start this poetry collection by the late, great Mary Oliver. I read seven poems this morning before I decided I needed to pace myself and not gobble these up so quickly.
Continuing the Mary Oliver love. She will be missed. She will be read.
Incredibly beautiful, I‘m really glad I downloaded this to remember Mary Oliver. I definitely want to read more of her poetry again now.
People have criticised her for writing too simply but I kind of think they‘re missing the point. This collection illustrates really well how much you can say with incredibly stark, simple, warm writing.
From "Such Silence"
So many of Mary Oliver's poems seem to ask, "What are you #waiting for? What are you missing?"
RIP to a woman who wrote beautiful poetry! ♥️??

Rest in powerful, poetic peace, Mary Oliver (1935-2019). My 2014 review of Blue Horses is posted here: http://folkloreandliteracy.com/2019/01/in-memorium-mary-olivers-blue-horses/

“Now all four horses have come closer,
are bending their faces toward me
as if they have secrets to tell.
I don‘t expect them to talk, and they don‘t.” - from “Franz Marc‘s Blue Horses”
(I note with some small pleasure that just because they haven‘t spoken, that doesn‘t necessarily mean they haven‘t shared their secrets - cc)

Mary Oliver perfectly captures my divine relationship with nature.
Trying some of this poetry on for size today... Feeling this one called "Such Silence" in particular... "Sometimes there's only a hint, a possibility. What's magical, sometimes, has deeper roots than reason."
Dedicated to my wife as we approach our four-year anniversary.
And none will ever speak a word of complaint,
as though language, after all,
did not work well enough, was only an early stage.
Neither do they ever have any questions to the gods -
which one is the real one, and what is the plan.
As though they have been told everything already,
and are content.

This solstice evening I'm tucked up in bed reading queer poetry. I love Mary Oliver so much! #queerbooks #poetry
Happy Solstice everyone!!
So, so good. I needed the quiet walk of a Mary Oliver collection, and this was perfect - full of life but still and quiet and noticing. Gorgeous.
