New York City, 1915 The Lusitania has just been sunk, and headlines about a shooting at J.P. Morgan's mansion and the Great War are splashed across the front page of every newspaper. Capability "Kitty" Weeks would love nothing more than to report on the news of the day, but she's stuck writing about fashion and society gossip over on the Ladies' Pageuntil a man is murdered at a high society picnic on her beat. Determined to prove her worth as a journalist, Kitty finds herself plunged into the midst of a wartime conspiracy that threatens to derail the United States' attempt to remain neutraland to disrupt the privileged life she has always known. Radha Vatsal's A Front Page Affair is the first book in highly anticipated series featuring rising journalism star Kitty Weeks.

Her father Julian has landed in NYC, so Kitty has come to join him after finishing boarding school. She gets a job at a local paper on the Ladies‘ Page and is thus covering an event where a man is killed. It‘s 1915, so it‘s tricky for a woman to investigate, but she doesn‘t think the police are on the right track. This is a fun historical mystery that does a good job of establishing the era. I enjoyed it.

After thinking how to rate this book, this is what I came up with…. Y‘know those weeknight dinners that aren‘t gourmet but aren‘t terrible either; they do the job of nourishing you and that‘s it. Well, that‘s kind of how this book left me when I finished it. It wasn‘t terrible at all, but not a 5 star read nor was it a so-so. It was leftover homemade meatloaf. Good, did the job and now onto the next read 👍

Continuing with the theme of Indian Independence Day, this historical cozy mystery series was written by an Indian-American author. At least I hope it‘s a series! So far I‘m only aware of two books.

Fun fact: the younger sister in The Henna Artist is named Radha just like the author of this series.

An enjoyable historical (WWI era) mystery starring an aspiring female reporter and surprisingly, no romance.

Found this on an MMD list a couple weeks ago (“20 historical mysteries featuring feisty female protagonists” http://bit.ly/2MqFC9E). I‘m looking forward to reading more of the books she mentioned.

+1 for #ScaryScavengerHunt: Where a character dies ✔️

+2 for a mystery

After a day walking all over Manhattan (7.2 miles!) and even celebrated Lunar New Year in Chinatown for a little while, my feet are up and I'm catching up on this so far so good mystery that takes place in the same places I was walking today only 100 years earlier!

I liked this one - it‘s set in NYC at the beginning of World War I, with the young girl newspaper reporter being in the right place at the right time. It was a fun read. #13inThree

This fills the bill for #cozymystery for #Booked2018 and I really enjoyed it. Play on words in the title, “amateur” investigator, and minimal violence on the page. It‘s also well researched in terms of the #fashion in clothes and home furnishings, the political atmosphere, and popular songs and books of the time. I‘m definitely adding the next book in the series to my #TBR list. #readingresolutuons

Cinfhen Yay!!! So glad you found a new series to enjoy! Congrats on another prompt completed💜 6y

🔔📚🔔 I love this series! Kitty Weeks is an awesome character. While the 1st in the series (this book) is a bit lighter on the mystery part it's worth getting to know Kitty + it's a rare book in that women aren't the murder victims! $1.99 ebook!

??? I love this mystery series! Set in early 1900s NY Capability "Kitty" Weeks wants to be a newspaper reporter but the whole being a woman is kind of a problem. But she's determined af & ends up at an event where there is a murder and she can't leave it alone needing to solve it. (Great if you want a historical mystery that isn't violence against women). #recommendsday even though it isn't Wednesday

Pardon my language, but fuck this book. 12 pages from the end the villain declares one of the characters is a "faggot" and committed suicide out of fear of being outed. No. Just no. It was bullshit that added nothing to the story and ruined the book for me. I'm tired of straight authors using gay suicide as a convenient plot point.

LauraBrook God, that's horrible and disgusting. 😡 7y
johnnie_cakes @LauraBrook I'm so angry. Not only for the shitty representation, but also because I feel duped by the author. 7y
LauraBrook @johnnie_cakes I'd be angry too, and I'm angry for you that you read this crap. All that time on the book, hopefully not much 💰spent, and for this? Bullshit! This kind of crap in books makes me incandescent with rage. (edited) 7y

Entertaining historical fic great for anyone who shies away from mystery bc they don't know where to start or want to avoid violence against women. Set in NY during WWI Capability "Kitty" Weeks is a women's fashion reporter trying to solve a murder that occurred at an event she attended. While she's more than capable (heh) she's living in a time where women aren't even allowed to vote. (Bit of info dumping w/ historical info but still good.)

Zelma Thanks for the rec! I tend to dislike thrillers and mysteries in general due to graphic violence. I can deal with a little or if it's imperative to a character's development, but overall it's not my thing. 8y
Matilda @Zelma this should be a good fit :) 8y
