Out of the sewers and streets comes the biggest threat London has ever facedrats, hungry for human fleshin this 40th anniversary edition of the classic bestseller with a foreword from Neil Gaiman, rat-bitten (die-cut) cover, and black-edged pages It was only when the bones of the first devoured victims were discovered that the true nature and power of these swarming black creatures with their razor sharp teeth and the taste for human blood began to be realized by a panic-stricken city. For millions of years, man and rats had been natural enemies. But now, for the first timesuddenly, shockingly, horriblythe balance of power had shifted.

I loved how characters were pretty nicely fleshed out, not too common thing in this genre.

Atmosphere was horrid! I could really feel the horror and fear that characters were feeling. Ending was also great xD

Although it read like it has never seen an editor, this was great. I mean, who doesn‘t enjoy mutant rats attacking London?? I think I‘ll put the sequels on my tbr. Recommend!

2020 is the year of the rat and our book club devoted roughly half our reading to rat/rodent related horror (sometimes it was a stretch). We started January off strong with this 1974 classic. Herbert‘s empathy for his characters/victims and commentary on class in England stand out in this gruesome little creature feature. And there is a monster rat at the end that has haunted us for ten months!

Michael_Gee “Harris would never forget the horror he felt under the gaze of the three pairs of sharp, wicked–looking eyes. It wasn‘t just their size, or natural repulsion of vermin that numbed him. It was because they didn‘t run, or try to hide. There was no sign of panic. Just three still bodies, malevolently watching.” 4y
TheNeverendingTBR Great horror novel, I've never read the second book though 🐀 4y
Reggie I‘m jealous you have a horror book club. Sounds amazing! 4y
Michael_Gee @TheNeverendingTBR Me neither but I am definitely interested! In fact I may do that before the end of the year 🐀 4y

The Rats was so good, one of the most horrid horror novels I've ever read; it was just disgusting.

But I've never read it's sequels, I have Lair though - the second book; any fans of this trilogy?

This one has been on my TBR pile for far too long....I enjoyed reading something different but this is a bit too gory for me! 🤢 🐀

Mistermandolin Loved this. Herbert is a master of the genre. The Fog is even better. You get used to the gore in the end. 4y

1st book of 2020‘s Year of the Rat 🐀: Started off strong with James Herbert‘s classic THE RATS. It‘s a gory, well-paced, thrilling tale of mutant rats attacking 1970s London. There‘s tons of violence, but the horror the reader feels often comes from a place of empathy for the down-and-out folks who have suffered so much already from the disdain of society.

I enjoyed this despite the pacing feeling a bit slow at times. The concept is terrifying. Herbert does a good job of being squicky without having too much gore. I'm definitely intrigued enough to read the next two books.

Michael_Gee Me too! I think he‘s a good writer and the other two plots sound very different from the first so I‘m curious what they will be like. 4y

Book 2 of my #24in48 #readathon

I've always kinda enjoyed this book. It's short, simple, and doesn't seem to want to do anything except entertain and possibly gross out the reader!

As you can see my the state of this edition, I've had it for many years and read it quite a few times, haha. This was one of the first horror novels I read as a kid that got me into the genre.

This was Herbert's 1st novel. Whether that's the reason but this felt amateurish. The characters were hollow & the plot quite silly (the MC, an art teacher, somehow knows better than all the experts and scientists and is given government secrets because he seems trustworthy). There's a lot of gory fun in here (the train chapter was intense) but the rats featured so much, after 100 pages it got a bit repetitive. Fun but too silly.

Aleida I have rats as pets and they‘re the sweetest! What is this book about? 6y
myers85 @Aleida Giant rats that tear people apart and eat them... I don't think you'll like it! My picture isn't a very good reflection of the book! 6y

The Bookshelf score part two. I finally found a copy of "The Rats" by James Herbert. I have looking for this one for years. Good things come to those who wait. So if you ever make it to central Michigan check out The Bookself. A word of warning though, it's closed on Sundays.

MayJasper It scared me silly 😱. That's when I realized horror wasn't for me! I'm glad you've tracked it down. Enjoy. 7y
