It's been a while since I read bk2 in this series, so was really pleased to pick this one up and enjoy this Danish thriller with the grumpy but very funny detective morck. Here, a message in a bottle is washed up on a Scottish beach + eventually lands on department q's desk. With his two odd assistants, the investigation becomes a hunt for missing children and a particularly clever villain

I really like this series. This is the third installment. The core characters are lovely and quite amusing. I look forward to finding out what the deal is with Assad. This one starts with a pair of boys being held captive. There's a lot going on, actually. It kept me engaged.

💤 💤 💤 I found this one a real snooze fest. Never felt I really got into it or cared and found much of it boring, and it was a long bore too. Don‘t know if it was the subject matter or the narrator of this audiobook. Let‘s hope these get better. This is the weakest of the original three #NordicNoir Series. Not really interested in all the characters. All that boring talk about health and safety and asbestos too. 👎👎👎

EadieB Seems I felt the same way: Message in a bottle from 13 years ago have Carl and gang wondering about 2 young Danish boys who are missing. Removing side plots that have nothing to with main plot could have made book shorter and not so boring. Action only picked up towards the end. Rose/Yrsa character was interesting. Hope to find out more about this. Kidnapping and religious fanaticism main themes. Hoping for a shorter book next time!

Andrew65 @EadieB @gradcat I enjoyed the Camilla Lackberg series and the last one has a bit of a different feel to the previous two and even has a section from the seventeenth century which was really good. Had a mixture of audiobooks and ebooks for this series. (edited) 5y

I finally finished! I'm really enjoying this series, Carl, Assad and Rose are a quirky team. They are searching for the answer to a message in a bottle from 15 years ago. And this leads them on a wild chase to find a mass murderer

Parent's worst nightmare - precious children are kidnapped. A controlling brute - abused by leaders in the Church. A detective and his crew - persevered to find the children. It would have been a great book, if not for the major flaw of being too much like Hill Street Blues. I remember how chaotic the police station was and the book was chaotic with the side action. Way too much.

Andrew65 @EadieB 100% agree. Last year Adrian McKinty, Mo Hayder, and Jane Casey were great reads. These are definitely not. Don‘t think they‘d even make it in to my top 5000 books list! 6y

Just finished the audio of this one. The audio was a new experience and I suddenly noticed things I hadn‘t noticed before.

In this story Carl, Assad and Rose/ Yrsa are trying to solve two mysteries. Department Q suddenly finds themselves in possession of a bottle with an old letter in it and they start the work to interpret the letter. They are also looking into an old fire case. Both cases suddenly became very less cold and they investigate.

Marina_h I liked this one but I still feel like the books are too long. 6y

Tove_Reads I still like the first book the most. In this one I liked that there was more about the main characters than in the last one. Could easily be 20% shorter and then be a better book. 6y

Butterfinger A lot of crimes were being covered - the arson and the Serbs, the kidnappings (main story), the gang wars. I keep thinking that surely the stories will converge. And, we still have the overriding mystery of who attacked Carl and Hardy. 6y

AnneCecilie I felt that more happened in this book, and there was more of an immediacy since the cold cases weren‘t as cold and happening in the present too. 6y

EadieB We could have done without all the side plots that has nothing to do with the main plot. Still too wordy and boring in parts. Very slow in the beginning - better pace in the last parts. 6y

Marina_h I think he is. I've thought from the beginning that he actually has a real big heart and wants to make sure people around him a doing good. I also think he cares for Assad evrn though he seems to get on Carl's nerves sometimes. But I think Carl may be worried about what it is that's going on with Assad 6y

Marina_h Honestly that is one if the side stories I could do without. I don't really feel like we get to know Mona so it's all a bit shallow and uninteresting to me. But I'm wondering if the other psychologist will show up again. He seemed like he could push some of Carl's buttons 6y

Butterfinger Especially when he still has feelings for the ex. He doesn't want her living with them, but he acted jealous of her new man. 6y

AnneCecilie Not sure, it would be interesting to see Carl in a relationship, but I‘m not sure she‘s the one. For me this has been such a small part of the story so I never gave it much thought @Marina_h @Butterfinger 6y

Marina_h I wonder how they could not have any idea that there was something strange about this guy, but then I think that may well be normal for men on a sports team. They are only there for the sport and not really that interested in each other. 6y

AnneCecilie And don‘t we close our eyes if something doesn‘t make sense? They never would have guessed that one of them were hiding something like this. I feel like this is often the case in real life, that family and friends close to a killer never knew anything or would have thought that about him/ her. @Marina_h 6y

Marina_h I could actually believe that. I think some religions are so secluded that something like this is likely to happen. 6y

Butterfinger Paol's brother is the first one who talks. I was so happy he wrote Rachel in that way. I was rooting for her. And, then was worried about how they would find the children. 6y

AnneCecilie I found that hard too, but I think @Marina_h makes a great point. After having experienced that the killer will kill one child, the parents do what they can to save the others. At that point the threats makes the family behave as the killer wants. @Tove_Reads Do think that anyone would believe them? The ones who left were forced to leave and inside the sect no one would believe them. And the parents and its members would protect the sect. (edited) 6y

Butterfinger When Carl saw the mannequin head in the apartment, I started wondering. Especially with the way Yrsa was acting. I'm within 150 pages till the end so I don't know the reason why she is acting this way. 6y

AnneCecilie I felt that the twist was a little unnecessary, but I‘ll see how this will play out in future books before a final judgment. Yrsa and Rose as twins were OK and made sense with previous comments. I never thought about future books @Tove_Reads @Marina_h 6y

EadieB @Tove_Reads We may be able to fit her in as it takes me at least 2 days to read a book and we do have at least 5 days in between books. We have about 10 books a month so we can allow 3 days for each book. Easy to read 2 books at the same time during group reads such as LibraryThing and Binchy. Kimzey Have you read the other books in this series? Wondering if it's better to read them in order or if it doesn't matter. 9y

Smangela @Kimzey you could probably read them out of order - there is an underlying storyline with the main character though. I've read 1 & 2 and part of 3 :) but it isn't quite like, for example, the Stephanie Plum series where there is a recap/introduction I don't think. Im currently starting over to read them with my hubby so I can comment to confirm when I get into #2 :) 9y
