This was unexpectedly Proustian, and deeply profound and moving.I was in tears at the thought that so many years later, in 2022, I am reading it, and now is still now, and Laura and Pa and Ma are not forgotten. I am loving this reread so so much

So much to talk about in todays chapter. So much great writing. So much wonderment. It‘s hard to imagine living so deep in the woods, you don‘t realize how big the sky is, not knowing how to play going into town because it‘s such a foreign concept. Talkative Laura is struck dumb. I can‘t imagine what she‘d think about all the things we have in the world now!! A couple other gems: telling Charlotte and Nettie that they couldn‘t go into town, 👇🏻

megnews The little cracked saucer and beautiful cup with only one big chip. One part that always hurt me for both Laura and myself was how much she disliked her brown hair (and mine!). 1y
Vansa Seriously.I found that..internalised ideas about beauty standards so difficult. But also realistic. We still have those! My entire adolescence,I was constantly told at school that I was terribly hirsute for a girl!oh,and skin colour,of course,in deeply colorist India. 1y
Vansa It's incredible how the narrative voice is childlike without being childish.Something Ishiguro could have paid attention to in Klara and the sun. 1y

TheQuietQuill Oh the things we take for granted in todays world! Going to town for Laura was like a trip to Disneyworld! I also loved how they got dressed in their best to go to town too. I admit, I do that with my son when we go out to the store, or anywhere for that matter. I dress him in nice clothes and do his hair and everything. I guess it‘s because my grandparents always did that with me too. 1y
keys_on_fire Isn't it amazing how from such a young age we begin comparing ourselves to other people? I do remember this being a theme of Laura and Mary's relationship that even translated to the television show. Mary was always the perfect one and Laura was the mischievous one. While I was living in the country as a child, I hated it because I couldn't be with my friends when I wanted. Now as an adult, I look back a the experiences with fondness. (edited) 1y
AnnR My favorite part is Laura gathering too many pebbles to fit in her pocket. That sounds like something I would have done, as I was fascinated with rocks when I was a kid. I was always looking for quartz and hoping it would be filled with gold. 🙂 1y
sblbooks The world is so much smaller nowadays. We can go 7 miles by car in 10 or 15 minutes. Yet Mary and Laura had never been that far in their entire life. I felt bad for Laura, she always compares herself to Mary and feels like she doesn't measure up.😞 that is very common among siblings 1y
Bookwormjillk @Ann_Reads that‘s my favorite part too! 1y
mrp27 Another great chapter! I could always identify with Laura. Not being able to think that brown hair could be just as pretty as golden hair and always feeling like a bit of a mess. (edited) 1y
BarbaraJean I loved this chapter, and really felt for Laura when she compared herself to Mary. Especially when she thinks to herself that it‘s not fair that it‘s so easy for Mary to be clean and neat and good and sweet! I relate to being the younger sister who feels like she can‘t ever measure up. 1y
megnews @Vansa she does write Laura‘s voice perfectly. 1y
megnews @TheQuietQuill yes very much like Disney World. Can you imagine what she would have thought to see that!! 1y
megnews @keys_on_fire yes I remember how much a part of their relationship these comparisons were. It always made me feel bad for Laura. 1y
megnews @Ann_Reads and when she burst into tears! You just want to reach through the pages and hug her! 1y
megnews @sblbooks it is amazing the changes in travel. I used to do a lot of genealogy and it always fascinated me thinking how different life would have been. 1y
megnews @BarbaraJean it‘s so funny because I‘m the older sister. I think my sister felt like Laura and you too. 1y
IamIamIam I felt so bad for Laura, just being wonderstruck and not able to talk to anyone. She's just so cute. We all feel less than when we look at other people but to feel that way when almost everyone's at the same level is hard. I loved the pebbles, too! My kids are always coming home with rocks! 1y

Another chapter to make me thankful I live when I do and can grab sugar from the store if needed! This chapter made me think about Ingalls‘ writing process. If she was 6 when this took place I can‘t imagine she could remember the details 61 years later. Did she interview family members, do research? It‘s fascinating to me. If you or children you know are interested in learning about the maple sugar process and live in an area with maple trees 👇🏻

megnews I recommend checking your local metroparks. Mine have programs every year to show the process. By the end of the chapter I was very excited for Laura that she finally gets to go somewhere and for Ma that she gets to wear her special dress and dance. Looking forward to tomorrow! 1y
rubyslippersreads I think I read that, after Ma died, Laura wrote to relatives, asking them to share memories. 1y
megnews @rubyslippersreads thanks for sharing that! 1y

IndoorDame I‘ve never seen the whole process, but I used to be a substitute teacher at a nursery school in Vermont and they had a tap in this maple tree in their yard, and while the kids played outside they‘d give them a tiny Dixie cup with the sweet water that comes out first. And it‘s super thin in sugar content. It tastes more like the inside of a honeysuckle flower than like maple syrup. 1y
Deblovestoread I love maple sugar candy. I‘m reading Braiding Sweetgrass with #NaturaLitsy and it has a section about the process. So much work to get a usable portion of sugar. 1y
TEArificbooks Yes, I love my modern conveniences. They only bought a tiny bit of white sugar from the store for when company came and hand made the maple sugar for everyday use. What would they think if they could see us now, buying 5 -10 lb bags at the store? 1y
AnnR This is one of my favorite chapters, as it made me crave a stack of pancakes dripping with butter and maple syrup. It also serves to remind me just how much time and effort went into gathering, processing and storing food. One generation taught the next generation. 1y
IamIamIam Once again, my suburbanite background shows in the fact that I associate maple trees with the maple walk at the arboretum!!! 🍁 Lol, thinking about Grandpa watching the for so closely made me feel foolish that I sometimes struggle regulating my electric cook top! How fascinating of a process, though! 1y
Suet624 Warm maple syrup on ice cold snow as a treat is soooo good. 1y
KristiAhlers I loved this chapter. When I was still flying when we had an overnight sit in Vermont I‘d hit up a store there that had all things maple. I‘d come away with maple candy. So freaking good. 1y
mrp27 I remembered this chapter well and still love it! I grew up on grocery store syrup which we all know is nothing like the real deal maple sugar. It wasn‘t until I was a grown married woman living in NY and traveling to Vermont for ski trips that I learned what real maple syrup looked and tasted like. From then on I quit using grocery store syrup. 1y
AllDebooks LIW's books are my absolute childhood favourites 😍 1y

“Laura had only a corncob wrapped in a handkerchief, but it was a good doll. It was named Susan. It wasn‘t Susan‘s fault that she was only a corncob.”

I loved this book as a child and now I see why. The descriptions are simple but full of sensory details. The whole book is filled with details of how to do everything, especially with food. Pa‘s stories are a little heavy on the moral teachings, but the whole family is always so grateful and happy.

TEArificbooks These were my favorite books growing up. I introduced my boys to the series and they love them too. The food descriptions really made them crave pulled pork sandwiches and beans. 3y
OutAndAbout @mdm139 funny how great descriptions can make you crave such simple foods. I had to go make myself some honey slathered toast after Pa found the honey tree! 3y

The tagged book is one of the books that got me interested in reading as a little girl. I was so enamored with the idea of traveling across the prairie in a covered wagon. When my mom‘s aunt passed away, she gave her a few of these titles that she had owned, but some were missing. I went on eBay and found this complete set with a box and I just had to have it. It‘s like returning to my childhood and I can‘t wait to go back and read them all

ReadingOver50 Awesome box set! 4y
TravelsWithBooks My mom has this set when I was growing up. I read them all haha. 4y

Scochrane26 My sister has the whole set, too. I took the Anne of Green Gables set because those were my fave. I‘m sure I‘ve read the Little House books but don‘t remember. Loved the show though. (edited) 4y

Book 12 of 2020 #LittleHouseInTheBigWoods by #LauraIngallsWilder I loved this book when I was in elementary school, and I still watch the TV show on occasion, so I decided to re-read what I consider to be an American classic. The lovely writing of life in the Big Woods is a delight. Laura, who is 5 at the time of the book, regales readers with tales of fun, adventure, and hard work. If you haven‘t read it, give it a try. 5 ⭐️
