In Five Years
In Five Years: A Novel | Rebecca Serle
Perfect for fans of Me Before You and One Daya striking, powerful, and moving love story following an ambitious lawyer who experiences an astonishing vision that could change her life forever. Where do you see yourself in five years? When Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Cohan is asked this question at the most important interview of her career, she has a meticulously crafted answer at the ready. Later, after nailing her interview and accepting her boyfriends marriage proposal, Dannie goes to sleep knowing she is right on track to achieve her five-year plan. But when she wakes up, shes suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. The television news is on in the background, and she can just make out the scrolling date. Its the same nightDecember 15but 2025, five years in the future. After a very intense, shocking hour, Dannie wakes again, at the brink of midnight, back in 2020. She cant shake what has happened. It certainly felt much more than merely a dream, but she isnt the kind of person who believes in visions. That nonsense is only charming coming from free-spirited types, like her lifelong best friend, Bella. Determined to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind. That is, until four-and-a-half years later, when by chance Dannie meets the very same man from her long-ago vision. Brimming with joy and heartbreak, In Five Years is an unforgettable love story that reminds us of the power of loyalty, friendship, and the unpredictable nature of destiny.

I liked how different it was to what I was expecting, but I waited for the big moment, only to have it sort of end right after. I loved the slow creep into the inevitable. Sad book and very quick; worth the read!

Ok, was not expecting this book to be what it was (in a good way, I guess) I was thinking light rom/com and this was not that book. It starts off lite but becomes an emotionally heavy read. Great narration/ a pleasant surprise that has me searching for the author‘s backlist. I will put TW under spoiler tag because it is definitely a spoiler!!

I went into this with an idea of what it would be like, but it turned out to be a whole other kind of story. But it was a good story! In this case, I didn‘t mind being surprised! Not a typical love story, but more about the love between two best friends.

I liked it!! I think the ending of Dannie‘s relationship was so subtle and true to how many end, especially ones you‘ve grown comfortable with. I loved the non traditional love story of Dannie and Bella. In the end, I was happy she and Aaron didn‘t end up together and that the feeling was grief. It gave me a wrap up I sometimes miss in more straight forward “romances”.

July 30, 2021 Oooooooh mmmmmmy gosh! So many emotions... I was so happy for Dannie and David (but that went downhill between them) and then what happened to Bella was shocking. I was not expecting that to happen. I kept hoping for the best AND even Dannie was hoping for the best but things did not turn out the way she wanted. Please read because I highly recommend ❤️

I‘m not one for sad books, which is why this one is just so-so for me. I also feel like it was a very short book that could have been longer with more character development. It was a quick read and I can appreciate why many people would like it, but it just wasn‘t for me. #littenlisten #romance #15points

Quick read! I loved that as well thought out as Dannie thought she had her life planned, life doesn‘t always go the way you meticulously outline it. I‘m a bit of a control freak so I totally felt for Dannie, but it‘s a good life lesson book and I‘m glad I‘ve learned to slow down and live in the moment. There‘s a lot to think about and digest. Now that my blotchy tear stained face is wiped off, I‘m ready to tackle the day!

This is one of those books where I went into it thinking it would be about one thing and it turned out completely different. I was worried it would just be the cliche friend that stole your boyfriend situation. I couldn't have been more wrong about this one. I loved it by the end even though it was very bittersweet.

Book #3 this year! This one took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. I went in thinking it was this romantic novel that would likely end in a happy note, but it did a 180 on me. While it‘s full of New York Cliches, if you look past that, you get a story about loss, love & friendship 💕

What a compulsively listenable story this turned out to be. I really had no idea where this would ultimately go...and when I wasn‘t listening to this, I was thinking about it. A touching story about friendship, love, letting go, and hanging on, set against New York City backdrop. With a touch of magical realism that not only enhances but is the basis of everything going on in this story. The narration by Megan Hilty was spot-on perfect.

Without thinking too hard about it, I really liked this book. It was a quick read and I wanted to see how it all turned out in relation to Dannie‘s dream. The book definitely took a turn I wasn‘t expecting and hit me with all the feels. The characters aren‘t super relatable or realistic. But if you‘re an empath, the theme of choosing who you consider ‘family‘ is good and worth reading this book.

Does anyone else every feel so-so about a book, review it, and then dislike it more every time you think about it? It doesn‘t happen to me often, but it does happen.

I said in my review a few days ago that “I like the way it ended, but...” but I truly don‘t think I like the ending. If I‘d have had the info at the end of the story earlier, it would have changed a lot for me. So interesting how feelings can change with a little bit of distance.

I love reading easy, fun things on the weekend. When I started this, I thought it would be easy and romantic but that‘s not what this is. It‘s quite heavy, and more about friendship love than romantic love. I like the way it ended but I didn‘t love the journey there. I went back and forth from being annoyed at the main character‘s words and actions to feeling immensely sorry for her, and sadly that lasted the entire length of the book.

A book club pick that I enjoyed. A fast and easy read that I thought was a somewhat predictable love story but the ending surprised me and was a nice turn of events. Can I get a Litsy ruling on the incessant spelling of “whoa” as “woah”? Are we all just spelling it two ways now? It‘s spelled incorrectly in the book, which is a pet peeve of mine. Curious what other word nerds think???
