Grand Union: Stories | Zadie Smith
21 posts | 21 read | 30 to read
A dazzling collection of short fiction, more than half of which have never been published before, from the multi-award-winning author of White Teeth and Swing Time Zadie Smith has established herself as one of the most iconic, critically-respected, and popular writers of her generation. In her first short story collection, she combines her power of observation and inimitable voice to mine the fraught and complex experience of life in the modern world. With ten extraordinary new stories complemented by a selection of her most lauded pieces for The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Granta, GRAND UNION explores a wide range of subjects, from first loves to cultural despair, as well as the desire to be the subject of your own experience. In captivating prose, she contends with race, class, relationships, and gender roles in a world that feels increasingly divided. Nothing is off limits, and everything--when captured by Smith's brilliant gaze--feels fresh and relevant. Perfectly paced, and utterly original, GRAND UNION highlights the wonders Zadie Smith can do.

I definitely liked this. In one story, she compares police brutality to witch hunts in a way that made my head explode. In a good way. I also felt like this was mostly autobiographical, possibly more so than her novels. At least, that's how it reads. And there was one story about a dude from Charlestown that bored me to death. So it's like every short story collection in that sense.

I tried. I really tried, but this was just hanging uncomfortably over my head. I think Zadie is an author for authors and not so much an author for readers. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I liked Intimations, I mostly liked Feel Free, but I‘ve bailed on both this and Swing Time. I just think I‘m done with her fiction. #aam Onwards and upwards!

Cinfhen Amen, sister!!! I like that... I don‘t think she‘s a good fit for me either ( cause I‘m no author) 🤪 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen 👍🏻👍🏻 same!! 😜 3y
Cinfhen I did buy Intimations/ her essay collection so I‘ll try it but then I‘m done 🙅🏼‍♀️ 3y

Megabooks @Cinfhen I did enjoy that. Read it last year. Her nonfiction works much better for me! 3y
Cinfhen Haven‘t read any of her NF yet... 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen 😬🤞🏻 3y
Deblovestoread @Cinfhen I am reading Imitations now and while I‘ve come across a few lines that resonate I don‘t feel like I am the intended audience. I‘ve read On Beauty and it was only a so-so read for me so doubt I will explore anymore of her work. 3y
Cinfhen Uh oh @Kdgordon88 that doesn‘t bode well for me....😜 🙄 3y
BarbaraBB After bailing on Swing Time I too decided I‘ve had enough. I did like On Beauty and White Teeth though. 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yeah, I thought maybe I‘d like her short stories since I‘m a short story person, but nope, it‘s one of the few collections I just can‘t finish. 3y

This collection felt very random and disconnected. The narration made it difficult to tell where one story ended and another began.

Megabooks I have trouble with short story collections on audio in general and I listen to a lot of audiobooks. And I‘m 27% into this collection as an ebook, and not particularly enjoying it either. 3y

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #AuthorAMonth2021 @Soubhiville

I tried White Teeth by Zadie Smith when it came out and had a hard time getting into it. I was happy to give this author another chance. However, after finishing this collection, I still just don't think her writing is for me.

A couple stories in here I did really enjoy, like Lazy River, but most of them I forced myself to finish.

TheAromaofBooks I decided to give this author a pass - I just couldn't find any of her books that really sounded appealing to me!! 3y
Zoes_Human I DNFed this one. I didn't care for the style at all. 3y
Addison_Reads @TheAromaofBooks @Zoes_Human I'm going to try her book, Swing Time, but only because it was available in audiobook format from my library. Maybe the third try will be better. 3y

Love this article!

Disappointed though that my favourite (orange cream) doesn‘t get a recommendation 😮.
What‘s your favourite?

https://www.penguin.co.uk/articles/2020/december/quality-street-book-recommendat...

squirrelbrain I love the orange creams too! Rather going against the claim in the article that they‘re no-ones favourite! I also like the strawberry, but the recommended books are rather on the fluffy side for me.... 3y
LeahBergen That‘s just crazy. I like the orange creme, too. 😆😆 @Mitch @squirrelbrain 3y

Mitch @squirrelbrain I‘m an orange cream closely@followed by a strawberry cream and finger toffee! 3y
Mitch @LeahBergen @squirrelbrain I feel a radical movement to protect the future of the orange cream needs to be formed! 3y
squirrelbrain I was going to suggest a petition @Mitch @LeahBergen - a radical movement sounds much more fun! Should we eat lots of orange creams to make a very strong political point?! 3y
Cupcake12 Mine is the strawberry cream and it describes my reading perfectly 📖 3y
MsMelissa I also love the orange cremes! @squirrelbrain @LeahBergen I also love the strawberry creme and the chocolate eclair and the toffee finger 🤣 3y
Mitch @Cupcake12 synergy! 3y
Mitch I feel I now need emojis of the quality street sweets! 🤣 @squirrelbrain 3y
Deifio I like the purple one best. Never read any Zadie Smith 3y
TrishB Purple ones are my faves ❤️😁 3y
Prairiegirl_reading Like maybe orange cream is a Canadian favourite!? It‘s mine too! @Book_Fiend_Melissa @LeahBergen I did have a laugh though. 3y
RaeLovesToRead I feel a dissonance haha... my taste in chocolate says I'm a caramel swirl but my taste in books says I'm a toffee penny! 3y
jenniferw88 Strawberry creme, followed by orange creme! 3y
LeahBergen @Prairiegirl_reading Maybe you‘re onto something there. 😆 3y
Mrs_B The orange creams are always my first pick! This sucks. Maybe we need an Orange Cream book suggestion? 3y
Mitch @Mrs_B absolutely! 3y

This collection of short stories were ok. I usually enjoy short stories but this collection did not work for me. I liked The Lazy River, Just Right, Miss Adele Amidst the Corsets, Big Week, Kelso Deconstructed, and Grand Union. These dealt with the absurdity of humanity #booked2020 #bookwithwhitebluetype #dogsoflitsy

Well.... I even tried speeding up the narration because that usually helps when I don't care for the narrator's voice. Didn't work this time.

Short stories by Zadie Smith. I didn‘t love the collection. The stories seemed random to me, no connection or theme. And the endings of a bunch of them seemed harsh and sudden.

charl08 Oh no, sorry this missed the spot for you. 4y

So as usual Zadie Smith‘s writing is wonderful, however I hungered for her longer stories. I did adore The Lazy River though.

I told him a story about a party I once attended, at which a man called me by another woman‘s name all night, mistaking me for her, maybe because she did the same sort of work as me. I didn‘t correct him, though we had met many times before. I tried to find it in myself to be insulted, to feel as others feel, to care as they would care, but instead I felt a strange lightness, like I‘d given myself the slip for the evening.

She walked through the city struck by these strange partnerships of the soft and the hard. In shops, in restaurants, in line at the CVS. She always had the same question. Why in God‘s name are you still married to this asshole? Lady, your children are grown. You have your own credit cards. You‘re the one with life force. Can‘t you see he‘s just a piece of the furniture? It‘s not 1850. This is New York. Run, baby, run!

They said, This might look like a war between men and women, but what this really is is the last siege of a ruling class. See Brett up there making that little bitchbaby face? See that? That‘s the face a baby makes when you try and take his rattle away. We‘ve had many, many babies so we‘re familiar. America being the rattle in this analogy.

... on one occasion, a book, held only for the duration of the photograph and – though perhaps only I noticed this – upside down. As they prep, each wears a heartbreaking pair of plain black spectacles. Once each girl is ready to pose, she hands her glasses to her sister. It is easy to say they make being young look like hard work, but wasn‘t it always hard work, even if the medium of its difficulty was different?

I have a new appreciation for short stories. It‘s such a different platform that a novel. Without having to worry so much about plot and characters they pack a real punch when making a statement about the state of our world. Zadie Smith is brilliant. I loved this book so much.

eraderneely I always thought Zadie Smith was better suited to short stories than novels. Even though I don‘t usually like short stories, I will have to check this out. 5y
