Testaments | Margaret Atwood
In this brilliant sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood answers the questions that have tantalized readers for decades. When the van door slammed on Offred's future at the end of The Handmaid's Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her--freedom, prison or death. With The Testaments, the wait is over. Margaret Atwood's sequel picks up the story fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead. "Dear Readers: Everything you've ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we've been living in." --Margaret Atwood

This audiobook pulled at all of my heartstrings. Every character's narration had their own narrator making it so easy to feel close to every single one of them. I was hooked from the very start and listened to all 13.5 hours in 3 days before and after work! If you haven't read the handmaid's tale I would say start there. Margaret Atwood is truly a phenomenal writer! ❤📚

Really enjoyed it; much easier to read than The Handmaid‘s Tale. I like how there was a familiar character that was well established in the book. Had a good pacing to the book. The Testaments didn‘t quite have the same impact on me as The Handmaids Tale, but I wasn‘t disappointed. Told through three POVs, an Aunt, a wife-to-be and a teen girl who grew up outside of Gilead only to find out she was once a child of Gilead, it was interesting to hear the different perspectives each had about what it is like to be a woman of Gilead. The downer is that many questions I had at the end of The Handmaids Tale remain unresolved.

Did I weep? Yes: tears came out of my two visible eyes, my moist weeping human eyes. But I had a third eye, in the middle of my forehead. I could feel it: it was cold, like a stone. It did not weep: it saw. And behind it someone was thinking: I will get you back for this. I don‘t care how long it takes or how much shit I have to eat in the meantime, but I will do it.

I really, really enjoyed this! I've seen a lot of hate for it, and I understand the complaints that it was only written to capitalise on the current resurgence of The Handmaid's Tale, but I think it's great!

Atwood is such a amazing writer and this is so pleasant to read. It's a bit different from THT but in all the rights way. It's doesn't detract from the original story but adds it's own dimension.

Thoroughly enjoyed this sequel. Was expecting more on OffRed and her journey after :( But then Aunt Lydia and her work blew me away. Atwood really is a writer of masses. This book had an ease in itself. Also loved Aida and her quotes although she had a very small role but was crisp n blunt.

I have read some mixed reviews of this. Mostly it seems by people who are invested in the TV show, or people who have put a lot of pressure on this because of an award it won.
I went in expecting nothing more then a return to Gilead and a good sit down with Atwood. And I enjoyed this immensely. Her style of writing is easy to get into but not unintelligently written.

I only read this book because my book club made me, but I ended up really enjoying it. I went with the audiobook, which turned out to be the right choice because it has a great cast, including Ann Dowd and Bryce Dallas Howard. It involves some plot points from the 2nd season of the show, but I don‘t think you need to have watched it in order to enjoy the book. Much to my surprise, I highly recommend this one.

I really enjoyed this! I was anticipating a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale book only, but Atwood made a really interesting choice to also make it a continuation of the TV series. I really appreciated having 3 women's points of view, and learning more about Gilead from characters with very different relationships to it. A+!

Nute Well, your review and few other reviews on Litsy have tipped me over the edge. I was going to bypass this book, but not any longer. 3w
ShyBookOwl @Nute I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. What was your reluctance? 3w
Nute I don‘t mind sequels/prequels/continuations that were always a part of the original plan, but I haven‘t had much luck with follow up books that make an appearance years after the first publication of the original book and for a timing that makes me inquire ‘Why now?‘ 3w
See All 6 Comments
ShyBookOwl @Nute gotcha. I can't speak for her, but I think the popularity of the show must have triggered it. In her afterward she says she's received questions from fans for decades and has spent years thinking about what the answers would be. So I think having a new audience pushed her to finally take the leap. 3w

How scary is it that these books ring true? As Atwood states, this book is based on the questions through the years, and the world we‘ve been living in.

Awesome!

Loved the Handmaid‘s Tale (book and series), and The Testaments definitely gave more insight into characters, like good old Aunt Lydia!

Of course, nothing will be as good as The Handmaid‘s Tale.

However this book definitely made a name for itself! Told from the perspective of three women, all of different backgrounds, we learn of each‘s part in the take down of Gilead.

We all knew it was coming, but who helped with its destruction?

Wow, Saturday is off to a great start! I‘ve ended my book-finishing drought (I‘m in the middle of about four books) with Margaret Atwood‘s new novel, The Testaments.

Full disclosure, it has been over ten years since I‘ve read The Handmaid‘s Tale, but I am a huge fan of the TV series.

This book picks up many years after the events of the first book and gives satisfying insight into the struggle to takedown Gilead.

Reviewsbylola I still need to read this. And like you, it‘s been forever since I read THT. 4w
Pruzy @Reviewsbylola If you‘ve been watching the show at all (even the first season) you should be able to dive right in. I think it‘ll still make sense if you just go straight to the book despite a time gap after reading the first! 4w

marleed I binged all 3 seasons back to back before I read the book. And yes, I think the sequel respects both the original book and the adapted series. I‘m thrilled that Ms Atwood at 80 was able to revisit a story she created in her 40s. I can‘t help but wonder how I‘d complete a story had 35 years of living passed. 1mo
Alora @marleed I never really thought of that! 😱 How true!! Wow! I‘m holding off on the second and third series until I finish this book 😊 1mo
marleed @Alora I think of that line from the book, Angle of Repose where you look at life as a Doppler Effect. For most of a life, life is coming at you - and it is thunderously loud and blows you over. And then, it passes and you are left with quiet and stillness. She wrote this story on both sides of her Doppler Effect. 1mo

I'm struggling to give this even a so-so. I find the graphic design of the covers to be more creative than the plot 😑 Disappointed with the obviousness of it all, and kept hoping for a greater message or lesson as I read on. The last 12 pages were my favorite - would be interested to know more about the time gap than the bulk of the book.

cherinium It's nice to see someone else who was not all that impressed. I also rated it a So-So. To sum it up, the story felt forced, like Atwood was trying to live up to the hype of the series. 1mo
cathipink @cherinium my expectations were high, given it's Atwood and the story is so iconic. I'm ok with a plot driven book, but I think there were missed opportunities (comparing people who only knew Gilead vs those who witnessed the transformation). I'm glad I read it bc I was curious about the book, but it was fairly forgettable. 1mo

Interesting addition to the original Handmaid's tale. It answers some questions but also leaves it open to interpretation as to what actually happened on the end. Not necessarily needed as The Handmaid's Tale was perfect on its own but it was still a good companion to it.
