Briony knows she is a witch. She knows that she is guilty of hurting her beloved stepmother. She also knows that, now her stepmother is dead, she must look after her beautiful but complicated twin sister, Rose. Then the energetic, electric, golden-haired Eldric arrives in her home town of Swampsea, and everything that Briony thinks she knows about herself and her life is turned magically, dizzyingly, upside down.

Mehso-so

I spent most of today reading this book. A fairy tale set in an England at the beginning of the 20th century in a village still following the old ways. The nearby swamp is full of dangerous beings who steal hands and try to lure people to their deaths. The story begins with Briony‘s confession at her trial as a witch. I couldn‘t put it down because I had to know the ending. But it‘s a bit too much Brothers Grimm and not enough Disney

Happy Earth 🌍 Day ! And TGIF. I was reading an article on books that are hidden gems. Books the author loves but not many people have read. This book was one of her recommendations. So thanks to Libby I was able to borrow the ebook. 💚🐉🌍

This novel moves quickly and Briony's voice is interesting and as confusing as one would imagine her voice to be (ie, confusing in a good, narratively consistent way). The main characters are well developed; I love Rose. Some pieces of the story are kind of silly and overly YA (eg, self-guided cognitive-behavioral therapy), and I downgraded it for dropping two characters. Overall, though, this is a fun one that I might recommend to my teenager.

I've been seeing posts about #24B4Monday and when I realized that I have much of Saturday to myself, I figured I'd jump in. I'm not a very fast reader, so I'll just see what kind of progress I can make on these books. I doubt I'll get in 24 hours, but we'll see how it goes. 🤞📚

At first I was thinking, this could have been so good. Then I kept going and it did get better. It became beautiful and haunting. There were so many layers, like peeling an onion, it can be painful and get into your eyes and make you cry... Also, i loved Eldric, there couldn't have been a better boy-man for the job.

elkeOriginal Eldric annoyed me at first but turned out to be pretty great 💕 7y

There is something to being 'in the mood' for a book. I stalled out on this last week but when I picked it up last night I tore through the remaining 300 pages enthralled—nothing could stop me. The narrator's voice is distinct and interestingly, she doesn't mean to be unreliable. But storytelling, memory, and fae creatures all conspire to twist her story even to herself. I am SO glad I gave it another chance. It was gorgeous and left me in tears.

elkeOriginal @aeeklund - you need to move this up your TBR. Fact. 7y

moranadatter This book is one of the only books I have ever read that accurately shows the effects of emotional abuse by a parent. 7y
Foragingfantasy I'm over halfway in. I'm enjoying it, but she's annoying me by not letting any of the old ones finish telling her anything! I'm practically screaming at her to listen! 7y
elkeOriginal @Foragingfantasy Ah, but once you know why she believes things the way she does and acts that way, it makes sense. At least I thought so! 7y
elkeOriginal @moranadatter I agree! So well done. No surprise it was a National Book award finalist! 7y

Finished this for #sirensreadingchallenge. I liked it, but had to start and stop a lot which I think detracted from the experience. The rural swamp people culture was well developed, and the audiobook reader was spot on with the voices. She really portrayed Rose's straightforward, simple bluntness and Cecil's nasty, entitled sleazebag self. Briony's relationship with Eldric was a tad overdramatic at times, but on the whole an enjoyable read.

This is the only photo I got from today. It's from the second floor and overlooking the front yard. We're at 18 inches on coastal CT, and it's over. I made limoncello, watched Intruders, crocheted a baby blanket, planted pepper seeds, finished "I Let You Go", and started "Chime." A successful snow day! ☃️☃️☃️

DragonSadhana @BookDragonNotWorm it started pretty early for us, so it doesn't surprise me that it was still going strong in the north! I'll be snowshoeing at some point. Got any winter activities planned? 😊 7y
DragonSadhana @krismac One of my favorite things about snow is how pretty everything gets! 7y
DragonSadhana @Wife it was! 7y
BookDragonNotWorm It took me the last 2 days to deal with all the snow! I snowshoed a puppy racetrack for the dogs, but now the only winter activity I want to participate in is hibernation (with some good books) until spring. If only that was an option. 7y
DragonSadhana @BookDragonNotWorm I wish we were a species that required a period of hibernation so that it was a socially accepted thing. "Sorry guys, I've got to go into my hibernation chamber. See ya in April!" :::carries books, kindle, and crochet projects into hibernation chamber::: 7y

Chime was a intriguing book to read. The characters, setting, and plot will keep a reader hook. I loved the folklore elements in this story and that the book took place in a swamp. Briony was my favorite character because I loved how she saw the world. Worth checking out. I'd give this book five stars.

#recommendsday

My all time favorite YA historical fantasy. It's ultimately an emotional journey to self-discovery. But it also has a sweet romance, such a strong sense of place, and it's full of poetry. In my opinion, it has all the makings of a classic.
