I‘m not sure this was the best book to read this month to learn about Greece for #FoodAndLit but it was light and entertaining enough. Strangers come together on a Greek Island and are bound together when they witness a tragedy. It really made me want to travel somewhere costal and sunny.

On my #bookquilt because I love Maeve Binchy! It was hard choosing just one Binchy book, but I went with this one because I listened to the audio cds a bunch after finding it on sale at Barnes and Noble (back when audiobooks were hard to come by and still expensive). So pre-Audible and Libro.fm

Cortg I read Tara Road years ago and although it probably wouldn‘t do much for me today, I was enthralled with it 20 years ago! 3y

#3Books that made me want to travel! @OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

1. Nights of Rain and Stars solidified my wish to travel to a Greek island.
2. 13 Little Blue Envelopes made me want to do a mad dash trip to Europe using someone else's itinerary for me.
3. Daughter of Smoke and Bone introduced me to Prague, a place I didn't know was on my bucket list until I read about it.

OriginalCyn620 Awesome! 4y
NormaT Love Maeve Binchy. Her stories of life in Ireland make me wish I was there. Her description of the landscapes, homes, families put me in the the story, I can see it! Have read all her books (edited) 4y

This was an enjoyable read but a bit of a struggle to keep at it , I felt like the storyline and placing of characters were a bit forced. I loved how I could really feel the Greece vibe and the layed back feeling of the little seaside town!

A lovely light read. I enjoyed this one most out of the three Binchy buddy reads I've done. Thanks @Andrew65 and fellow buddy readers. Look forward to the final discussion. #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead #NightofRainandStars

Andrew65 A very busy week has delayed me posting the final questions, will get onto it. 5y
CarolynM @Andrew65 No worries. When you're ready🙂 5y
ljuliel Hi Carolyn , I‘m looking for a notice about any further Binchy buddy reads ? I‘ve tried searching through the posts and think this is the last month‘s book. Are you guys continuing with any others ? @Andrew65 Thanks (edited) 5y
See All 7 Comments
CarolynM @ljuliel Hi👋 I'm pretty sure there will be more Binchy buddy reads @Andrew65 has been running them for a while. I haven't seen any details for the next one but I haven't been around very much in the last couple of weeks. Over to you Andrew - what do you have planned? 5y
ljuliel Thanks for the info, Carolyn. I‘m rereading Light a Penny Candle , so that reminded me that there was a buddy read of some of the Binchy books in here. I didn‘t know if you guys planned on going through her entire list , if they‘re in any order, or how you choose which one is next. I‘ll wait for Andrew to check in also. I appreciate your help 🙂 5y
Andrew65 @CarolynM @ljuliel Yes we have been running #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead for about a year and a half, with a buddy Read each month. We are reading the books in order of publication, usually around 19th of each month but this month‘s will be a bit later due to my personal circumstances. The next book is Whitethorn Woods. Thanks for the post @CarolynM 5y
ljuliel Thank you @Andrew65 That‘s one of hers I have yet to read. So Whitethorn Woods , we start reading around Oct 19 , or the discussion is then ? I‘ll see if I can get ahold of a copy. 5y

Question 5 of 5

JacqMac I think we might end up with some happy endings. Thanks to Vonni. (edited) 5y
EadieB I agree that there is still time in the book for some new directions on these relationships. 5y
CarolynM I hope David only goes back to his parents to show he loves them, not to do what they want. But I always have a very negative reaction about parents who want to make decisions for their adult offspring. 5y

Question 4 of 5

JacqMac I think it frustrated her to see them making what she believed were mistakes. I think she has regrets about her own mistakes and she wants them to fix their relationships while they still can. 5y
EadieB I agree with JacqMac that she is losing patience with their problems and she wants to help them fix their mistakes before it is too late. 5y

Discussion of Chapters 11 - 14

Question 3 of 5

JacqMac Vonnie‘s story is fascinating enough to be a book of it‘s own. I find it interesting that the town accepted her in the end. 5y
EadieB I agree that Vonnie's story could be its own book. Her husband Stefan was not very nice to her. I like how all the people on the island protect Vonni's story. 5y
CarolynM I agree with @JacqMac @EadieB - this could have been a whole book. Actually, I think all the stories could have been. I have felt through the other Binchy books I've read with you that she is great at coming up with ideas but doesn't seem to want to do the work to flesh them out into fully realised characters and stories so she throws them all into a mash up. The result is books that are entertaining but, for me at least, not very satisfying. 5y
cobwebmoth She's an interesting character. It was nice to finally learn her story, but I found it very sad. 5y
Andrew65 I agree @cobwebmoth A very sad story and annoying at the same time. This could easily have been a series of books, with this as the final one. Maeve does sometimes leave you a bit unsatisfied. @CarolynM @JacqMac @EadieB 5y

Question 2 of 5

JacqMac It‘s weird. I think she thinks she loves him, but I don‘t think she really does. I also think he‘s just telling her what he thinks she wants to hear. 5y
EadieB I agree with @JacqMac that Dieter and Elsa's relationship is a dead end as it doesn't seem like real love to me either. (edited) 5y
CarolynM I don't think there's really enough information to make a judgement. I'd like to know how the arrangement started and what each of them was thinking then. If she does go back I don't think it's likely to last very long. (edited) 5y
cobwebmoth It doesn't strike me as a very healthy relationship. I think that she would be happier in the future without him. 5y
Andrew65 Think I agree with @JacqMac and @EadieB. I don‘t think deep down even she thinks she loves him, or that he loves her - more the thought of her. 5y

Question 1 of 5

JacqMac I don‘t think so. Shane is so selfish. 5y
EadieB No I don't think selfish Shane was ever really interested in Fiona. 5y
CarolynM Not in a million years. He was only interested in what Fiona would do for him, he wouldn't have crossed the street for her, let alone travel back to the island. 5y

Greek island village, a story of friendship, dreams, fears, and complicated relationships forever altered by their shared experiences. I would think of this book as the best of Binchy. I love her characters. They helped each other with problems. Story was very engaging. Her descriptions made me feel like I was on the island along with the characters. I would highly recommend this one to those who love to read about relationships.

EadieB I don't think Thomas should have moved away from this situation. He is still Bill's father and needs to be involved in Bill's life. 5y
JacqMac I agree with @EadieB His son wants him and needs him. All he‘s doing is making the poor kid feel rejected. He should be on the next flight home. 5y

JacqMac No. What a messed up relationship. There is no honesty and trust. She should have just walked away. 5y

Discussion of Chapter 1 - 6

Question 4 of 4

EadieB Thomas got a divorce from his wife, Shirley. Shirley met Andy and Thomas decided to leave and let Shirley and Andy raise his son, Bill. Elsa had a relationship with Herr Dieter, her boss in Germany. Dieter never told her about his son he had with Monika, so Elsa wants nothing to do with Dieter as he reminds her of how sad she was when her father left her. Elsa in turn tries to console Fiona in regards to Shane not be happy about her baby. (edited) 5y
JacqMac There is so much! I love their relationships with each other. I don‘t want to say too much because I‘ve read ahead. I didn‘t mean to, it just happened. Lol 5y
EadieB Andreas has a son who left his restaurant 9 years ago and never came back from Chicago. David and Thomas have taken an interest in Elsa and are trying to help her with her problem. The theme seems to be about children and parents separating and missing the ones who have left. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Andrew65 @JacqMac Easy to do with this book because it just flows. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Complex characters, with some complex issues! Like (apart from Shane) how they are interacting and supporting each other. Elsa is an interesting one and still waiting to learn more. @JacqMac @EadieB 5y

JacqMac She thinks he will make her happy. I‘d tell her when someone shows you who they are believe them. 5y
CarolynM Who knows? This seems to a bit of a recurring theme in Maeve Binchy novels - the nice girl who is in love with a no-good man. I think I'm too old to be sympathetic to that situation. 5y
Andrew65 What is she doing! Ditch him and ditch him quickly before this becomes a totally abusive relationship! He came across as a horrible, horrible man. She deserves better and should respect herself. @CarolynM @EadieB @JacqMac (edited) 5y

ljuliel This was one of my favorite Binchy books. So good ! 5y
Andrew65 @CarolynM Ok, congratulations on the Ashes Win. 🏆 Well deserved. 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel Thanks for that information 😊 5y
CarolynM It's nice to have the Ashes, but the series isn't over yet! 5y
Andrew65 @CarolynM Apart from Steve Smith think there are big issues on both teams for batting! David Warne can‘t seem to buy a run! With a better batting line for yourselves we‘d have been dead in the series a long time ago, but after yesterday still a chance of a draw. With our current team that is unbelievable. Staggered England have not made more changes to batting. Think Root as captain is an issue! (edited) 5y
CarolynM Agreed about Smith. I haven't been impressed with our selection decisions either. I don't know how either of our openers kept their places for this test, and some of the bowling choices raise questions too. At least it's been more interesting than a walk over for either team would have been🙂 5y
Andrew65 @CarolynM For me unbelievable that they dropped Khawaja instead of Travis Head in the Last Match. He wasn‘t firing on all cylinders but was often close to breaking through. I‘d have replaced one of the openers with Khawaja, he seemed to be doing well as an opener during the suspensions. He always appears more dangerous than the others. 5y

This is my first time reading Maeve Binchy and I don‘t know what I expected, but this wasn‘t quite what I thought it would be. I didn‘t love the writing in this book. The story was okay for me, but a lot of the plot felt forced. I think I will give her another try with something different because I found value in some of this book and feel like it was just the wrong one for me. #booked2019 #irishauthor

María: "This book is about a group of people running away from their lives. They meet in a small village on the Greek islands and a friendship emerges. The Mediterranean fascinates me - the sea, the rustic stuff, the healthy food. I've never been to Greece, but when I arrived in London I was washing dishes in a Greek restaurant. For now, I‘m not running away. I came to London to improve my English and to begin again. And that‘s what I‘m doing.”
