Rapunzel's Revenge
Rapunzel's Revenge | Shannon Hale, Dean Hale
26 posts | 39 read | 12 to read
Once upon a time, in a land you only think you know, lived a little girl and her mother . . . or the woman she "thought" was her mother.Every day, when the little girl played in her pretty garden, she grew more curious about what lay on the other side of the garden wall . . . a rather enormous garden wall. And every year, as she grew older, things seemed weirder and weirder, until the day she finally climbed to the top of the wall and looked over into the mines and desert beyond.Newbery Honor-winning author Shannon Hale teams up with husband Dean Hale and brilliant artist Nathan Hale (no relation) to bring readers a swashbuckling and hilarious twist on the classic story as you've never seen it before. Watch as Rapunzel and her amazing hair team up with Jack (of beanstalk fame) to gallop around the wild and western landscape, changing lives, righting wrongs, and bringing joy to every soul they encounter.

this book is a fun version of a classic story. I think visually it‘s really exciting but the cowboy/old west thing was just not as appealing as I thought it might be

Raised in the high walled garden of her mother, Gothel, Rapunzel has led a very sheltered life. What happens when she learns the truth of what is outside the wall? Wild, Wild West shenanigans. Fairy tale style.

This was pretty darn adorable. Middle grade, so a quick read, and pretty simple art, but with fun characters, an interesting twist, clever fairy tale cameos, & a VERY proactive princess. Will definitely be picking up the sequel! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

When I was in elementary school, my school had a Books and Bagels thing they would do every so often.

When my sister brought home some rainbow bagels from Philadelphia, I knew what I had to do. 😂

I was not completely sold on this one. The twist from the Rapunzel story is nice - Rapunzel finding ways to combat Gothel, but the whole American West vibe, with outlaws and bandits and the cliched western frontier talk, made me want to roll my eyes. The illustrations are engaging. #FictionGraphicNovel #MiddleGrade #BBRC

LibrarianRyan As one book I agree. But as a series which it is it‘s not bad. 3y
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Interesting...I had not realized it was a series. 3y
LibrarianRyan @Librarybelle I believe there are 2 more. They can be read as standalone s but the characters are the same. 3y
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Good to know...thanks! 3y
Sace The cover is cute though! 3y

I needed a quick palate cleanser, and this was just the thing! A fun, middle grade graphic novel... I love Shannon Hale!

This puts me at 5/5 books finished and 1258/1000 pages read for #nutsinmay - looks like I need to up my goals a bit! I‘m going to try to finish 2 more books and read 1750 pages. @Andrew65

Andrew65 1750 pages! Well done! 👏👏👏🙌 4y

I‘m torn on this one. Good story, I liked that Rapunzel saves herself repeatedly and starts saving others too, the tiny bit of romance was good...but I‘m not sold on it. And was this used as inspiration for Disney‘s Tangled? Because I see a lot of similarities but not a straight adaptation.

Overall I‘d give it a so-so plus, but not quite a pick.

ravenlee Also, between finishing this and starting The Last Time I Lied I‘m just shy of 4 hours in #24B42019 @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid 5y
BeansPage That's a great start sweetie! Remember tomorrow is another day! 😁👍🏻 5y
LibrarianRyan I liked this GN and the books that come after but I do see your points. No it‘s not part of Disney‘s tangled but I had those same thoughts when I first saw tangelos. While mostly known for fairytales some of Shannon games other works are excellent. I suggest . (edited) 5y

Andrew65 Well done on a good first day. 👏 5y
ravenlee @LibrarianRyan I‘ve read several of Hale‘s books with my daughter (Princess in Black, Princess Academy) and really enjoyed Real Friends on my own. This one just didn‘t quite do it for me. 5y

An extra hour in the library supervising study hall after school gave me time to enjoy this fun retelling of Rapunzel set in a land that looks a lot like the West in the late 1800s. Strange creatures, bandits, a girl who doesn‘t need anyone to save her (because yeah, she does most of the saving) & a little romance make for an enjoyable fairy tale. Great for MG and even YA readers.

MicrobeMom Is it a graphic novel? 5y
TracyReadsBooks @MicrobeMom Yes! Should have mentioned that...☺️ 5y
MicrobeMom @TracyReadsBooks great! My daughter loves them. Always look for new graphic novels! 5y

Entertaining twist on Rapunzel. Her 20 foot braids are her best weapon! Some characters and elements from a few other fairy tales were thrown in as well.

Backyard reading and snacking with an iconic fairy tale #character turned badass comic book protagonist. Notice how Elliott has mastered the eating-pistachios-without-looking-up-from-her-book move. I‘m so proud. 😊

I really like the art work in this one. Rapunzel makes a good role model for girls because she is such a strong character. It was a fun read. #LetsGetGraphicWeeklongMarathon @Clwojick @TricksyTails

I don't usually read graphic novels so I think I'll try some this week. I've already read volume one of John Lewis' March which was pretty heavy. This looks like fun. #LetsGetGraphicWeeklongMarathon @Clwojick @TricksyTails

A graphic novel adaptation of the Rapunzel story cleverly translated to an Old West version of Fairyland. It's a lot of fun. By Shannon Hale, author of the delightful superhero series The Princess in Black.

Taking place in a Western-inspired fantasy world, This #graphicnovel puts a new spin on the story of Rapunzel. Once she gets herself out of the tower, she's ready to free the land from the evil Gothel's control. The artwork is bright & dynamic, & the story is full of fun action. I think that kids and teens will both enjoy this #reimagining of the classic #fairytale.

When I first saw the tag #HairThereAndEverywhere, I immediately thought of Rapunzel. I picked up this #graphicnovel at my new library earlier this week when I went in to register for a library card. Yes, the first thing I do in a new town is go to the public library & get my library card. Priorities, people! Anyway, it looks like it'll be an interesting retelling. #AndItsAugust

monkeygirlsmama Hey, a library card is nearly as important as getting a place to stay in a new place. 😺And her hair reminds me of lengths of sausages. Hahaha😹 7y
MarriedtoMrT The graphic novel is great! Good choice. 7y

Read this again, this time for my book club. I just...I can't. I feel like a spoilsport. I like that Rapunzel is set on rescuing her mother, in theory I like the pseudo Wild West setting, I like a diverse cast. But...the diversity felt like it was being used as a ploy because of the many stereotypes found throughout. I'm not a huge fan of the art. And for as inventive as it was in retelling this fairy tale, something about it just seems boring.

Totally slacked on rereading this fractured fairy tale for my kids book club this Wednesday. I felt ho-hum about it the first time around, but my clubbers are suuuper into this stuff. Gotta please the masses. 🙄 At least it's 77° on this vernal equinox! #porchreading!

I decided to choose some #kickassheroines from graphic novels. Strong female characters in comics are my jam! #seasonsreadings2016

Starting with Rapunzel and going clockwise:
Rapunzel from Rapunzel's Revenge
Faith/Zephyr from Faith (Valiant)
Barbara Gordon/Oracle from Birds of Prey (DC)
Bobbi Morse from Mockingbird (Marvel)
Thor from Thor/The Almighty Thor (Marvel)
Alana from Saga (Image)
Adrienne, Raven, and Bedelia from Princeless (Action Lab)
