Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection | Junji Ito
21 posts | 18 read | 6 to read
The master of horror manga brings the world's greatest horror novelFrankensteinback to life. Junji Ito meets Mary Shelley! The master of horror manga bends all his skill into bringing the anguished and solitary monster and the fouler beast who created him with the brilliantly detailed chiaroscuro he is known for. Also included are is the Oshikiri story cyclea high school student who lives in a decaying mansion connected to a haunted parallel world. Uncanny doppelgangers, unfortunately murdered friends, and a whole lot more are in store for him. Bonus: Itos dog! Thrill to the adventures of Non-non Ito, an adorable Maltese!

Roughly half of Ito's collection consists of his take on Shelley's novel. Ito touches upon the larger themes of the novel & is largely faithful to the source material. He emphasizes the horror elements of the story without sacrificing the sympathy that the reader has for The Creature. By far my favorite works in this collection are a series of linked tales about a dilapidated mansion where a student unknowingly stumbles across a doorway to (CONT)

vivastory an alternate universe, Bizarre & grotesque shenanigans ensue! The volume ends with 2 brief, yet touching, pieces on the relationship between Ito's deceased mother & his pet. Frankenstein, interdimensional homicide, body horror & heartwarming tales of pets in one volume. What more could you ask for? 4mo

To celebrate #scarathlon signups coming around for another year I treated myself to this Junji Ito collection in Waterstones. He‘s such a master of really inventive and cool horror and I bet this reinterpretation of a horror classic will help with a lot of bingo boards eh

Coueriamb I just got this from my local comic place too! It looks amazingly grotesque 8mo
gossamerchild Ooh, this one was pretty good! Junji Ito is a fantastic #scarathlon choice. 8mo

I love Junji Ito‘s horror manga. It‘s creepy and so hard to put down. I am especially happy with the way he drew Frankenstein‘s monster in this retelling.

I really loved being able to enjoy the story of Frankenstein in a different way while also seeing some amazing artwork. It was a treat to read a collaboration of two favourites of mine. I would highly recommend to any horror lovers or fans of either/both Junji Ito and Mary Shelley.

The Oshikiri story cycle afterwards is also so creepy and a great read! Junji Ito at his best.

Great retelling of Frankenstein- the art work was creepy and wonderful. There were also about 10 short stories that followed afterwards. They were strange and usual, but I enjoyed every single one.

They just opened up a used book store down the street from my house! They specialize in “weird fiction”. Anyway, picked this up and started it right away!

A manga retelling of Frankenstein, and a series of shorter linked original manga horror stories on the same theme as the original. Not at all my usual fare. I mostly chose this for the cover art. I‘m glad I read it though. The retelling was fantastic, and the original works lent dimension to the classic story. #BBRCYeahBabyEisnerAwardWinningGraphicNovel #FoodandLitJapan @LibrarianRyan

I really liked it. This was my first book by Junji Ito. Definitely going to check out more of his stuff. So much weirdness and creepiness.

I read Frankenstein in college, so I vaguely remember it. From what I can remember Ito's version is similar to the novel, but there are a handful of small differences.

Stopped by B&N before work. Again. Great stress reliever. I wish I didn‘t have to leave. Two more B&N exclusives ... ehhhh clown in a cornfield, I hope that‘s horror as it was a total cover buy ... and the tagged manga well I‘ve been meaning to purchase it for awhile so yes super excited to start reading ... current excuse ... it‘s for Halloween 🎃

LibrarianRyan Clown is susposed to be horror. I bought it for the cover too. I‘m 80 pages in. Nothing special yet but so far it is a fast read. 4y

In the minority here: Frankenstein was my favorite part of this collection. The art is amazing, especially the monster, but since so much of the adaptation was very faithful the changes towards the story's conclusion seemed pointless and took away some of the original punch. The other tales were fun; Oshikiri's weird alt dimension adventures would make a great show and the two short stories at the end were creepy. Great read on a gloomy weekend!

Manga horror for my #readathon book 3. This was another Christmas gift from a friend. I loved the original Frankenstein and seeing it in manga form is giving me all sorts of creepy nostalgia. I hadn't realized this had several other stories as well so I'm excited to dive into Ito's original tales as well. It's fairly long and I do plan to sleep so I don't think I'll finish it in #deweysreadathon but hopefully I'll make good progress.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

#Manga has always been a great quick pick-me-up for me; it perfectly marries my love for reading and watching movies. “Stories and pretty visuals together? (Well, horrifying images in this case since this is #Ito we‘re talking about) Yes, that‘s perfect!”

Great story collection, but I did prefer the side stories a bit more than #Frankenstein itself. The other tales just had more of the “horror” feel. Overall, a good short read!
