LOVED this book. Absolutely loved it. So much that I did not want to put it down after finishing, so I read everything on the jacket, and this bit from the front flap nicely sums up why I loved it: “brilliant psychological acuity and perfectly spare prose.” Yup, that‘s exactly it. 💚💙💚💙💚💙

DivineDiana Love how you staged your book! 💚 48m

Mehso-so

Meh. I had really high expectations for this one based on how buzzy it‘s been with raves all over the place from reviewers I usually agree with but this one wasn‘t for me. The main characters are young and dumb and sort of in love, can‘t figure out how to actually communicate with one another for shit, and spend a lot of time avoiding making decisions. I get that they‘re only in their very twenties by the end but I don‘t have the patience for it.

marleed I agree! 2d
Hooked_on_books Thank you for affirming for me my lack of interest in this book. 😬 1d
TheEllieMo I felt that about Conversations With Friends, but I was advised by someone whose opinion I trust that this was much much better. You‘ve got me worried now! (edited) 1d

3⭐⭐⭐

mandi1082 When I started this I thought this was a book about two people who meet because the boys mother cleans the girls family house. I thought they come back together years later and fall in love. Which is some what the synopsis but not really. I didnt really care for their chemistry. Or even the "games" they played with each other. It was like they wouldn't see each other and then they would and they would have sex. Then separate again and then repeat. A little frustrating is what I took from it. ?‍♀️

mandi1082 @Reviewsbylola yeah really disappointed I was so excited to read this and get all the feelings of first falling in love and life choices but got nothing from it. 2d

Things happened, like the crying fits, the panic attacks, but they seemed to descend on him from outside, rather than emanating from somewhere inside himself. Internally he felt nothing. He was like a freezer item that had thawed too quickly on the outside & was melting everywhere, while the inside was still frozen solid. Somehow he was expressing more emotion than at any time in his life before, while simultaneously feeling less, feeling nothing.

“Connell had just wanted to be normal, to conceal the parts of himself that he found shameful and confusing. It was Marianne who had shown him other things were possible. Life was different after that.”
I could identify with these two lost souls and I enjoyed the quiet yet inexorable way their relationship unfolded. We all make mistakes and we are all deserving of grace. #IrishAuthor

Denise decided a long time ago that it is acceptable for men to use aggression toward Marianne as a way of expressing themselves. As a child, Marianne resisted, but now she simply detaches, as if it isn‘t of any interest to her, which in a way it isn‘t. Denise considers this a symptom of her daughter‘s frigid and unlovable personality. She believes Marianne lacks warmth, by which she means the ability to beg for love from people who hate her.

I‘m reading the US edition & have encountered soccer & football used interchangeably in one paragraph. Is this:
a. Typical usage in Ireland?
b. Editing terminology for an American audience, but inattentively incomplete?
c. Editing to alert blinkered readers that the next reference to football is the sport called soccer in USA?

(Photo: my friends are attending FIFA women‘s cup games in France.)

Lola While I am looking forward to our Irish Litsy peeps chiming in, per Wiki the terms are used interchangeably in Ireland. I hope that‘s the case because I ordered this one thru BOTM and if it‘s actually sloppy editing, I‘m gonna be annoyed... 😠 1w
Lindy @Lola I‘m encouraged to hear that the terms are used interchangeably in Ireland. An Irish slang for cupboard (press) comes up later in the novel, so I was happy to see that linguistic flavour has been preserved in that instance, anyway. 1w
Lindy @Lola Also, I‘m totally wrapped up in this novel. 70 pages in and my other books in progress are going to have to wait until I am done with this one because I don‘t plan to stop. 1w
See All 9 Comments
TrishB Agree with @Lola they are both used in Ireland! I‘m very jealous of your friends Lindy 👍🏻 would love to be watching a few of those games. 1w
Lindy @TrishB Thanks for confirming the interchangeable usage. I wish I was in France too… going to museums while my friends attend football games. 😁 1w

I love getting new library books!

I have a cool work perk in that I can get my library holds delivered to my office. But I realized a few months ago that it meant I NEVER went to the library. I switched things up recently and now pick my holds up at the local library. A tiny bit less convenient, but it‘s really nice to wander the stacks and feel more connected to the community.

Got my prize for finishing the library summer reading program! There were a bunch of fast food coupons that won‘t get used because we don‘t eat fast food (ChickFilA is the exception, which is weird because I‘m an atheist vegetarian...) but I love the tote. I‘ve seen a lot of praise for the book, so I chose that for my ARC. Hope it‘s good!

ravenlee @Zelma this is the first time I‘ve used the app, and wasn‘t really paying attention. More like getting the hang of it, and then all of a sudden I was done! When a book is hyped by awards and reviews, there's always pressure on the reader (or maybe I only do this to myself ??‍♀️) to "get it"/enjoy it/feel moved by the work. Oftentimes I feel bad because a book that I'm "supposed" to love doesn't work out for me. NOT THE CASE WITH NORMAL PEOPLE!! You guys, I loved it. I felt very connected to this story. The interactions felt real, the misunderstandings understandable (if that makes sense?)??

I feel a little bit unsure of this book. I didn‘t love it or hate it, but I did find the meaning behind it interesting. The characters were pretty unlikable, in my opinion and the story got a little too much with the time line jumping forward constantly. I liked the message behind it about love and what we need from other people, but I don‘t think I really liked the ending.

I dont know what to say about this book other than that it restored something in me that I had lost a long time ago. This book is about a boy and girl. & they live both in the present and the past and it‘s their ability to do so that enables them to love themselves and others. This book uncovers the truth about soulmates, about love, it is filled with grief because it isn‘t pointless. Love is often miscommunicated, but if it‘s right, it grows.

Just under 300 pages of pure heartache. I adore books that delve into the relationships people share as they grow, learn, succeed, disappoint. Normal People was all that and more - it resonated with a part deep inside, it‘s hard to explain. A love story sans romance, perfectly executed.

Wow! I just finished it and loved it. It feels like a completely original story even though there is nothing really unique about it. I loved the characters and their relationship. The author delved deep into their psyche and, as a reader, you can understand why the characters are making the choices they are even when they themselves cannot. This story rang very true to life for me and I know it will be a book I think back on often.

This is a good book. It‘s a slow burn, depressing kind of book, but I generally like that sort of thing. I‘m not sure I‘m quite as blown away as some folks, but this was SO hyped that it was a lot to live up to. It was compelling and I was invested in the couple‘s journey and wanted to know what would become of them. But it also wore me out a bit with their endless come and go relationship. Definitely worth reading though.

I truly can‘t figure out how Sally Rooney made this story so mesmerizing and magnetic. But she did. I could not put it down. I cared so much about Connell and Marianne, the main characters, who we see in a coming-of-age meets millennials love story that takes place in Ireland. I was so drawn to their story and the decisions they made that sometimes helped them and sometimes haunted them. She captures messy and real life so accurately.

Working at a library I will pick up a book not on my radar just because it‘s up for an award or there have been many great reviews. Conversations With Friends annoyed me until I bailed and this one upon finishing gets a mediocre rating from me. I‘m sure others will enjoy this; maybe those younger or younger at heart than I will give it a thumbs up. If this well represents - is it YA?- I know it‘s just not for me.
