In Pieces
In Pieces | Sally Field
In this intimate, haunting literary memoir, an American icon tells her story for the first time, and in her own gorgeous words--about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother. One of the most celebrated, beloved, and enduring actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades, beginning with her first TV role at the age of seventeen. From Gidget's sweet-faced "girl next door" to the dazzling complexity of Sybil to the Academy Award-worthy ferocity and depth of Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity. Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within. With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind-the-scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships--including her complicated love for her own mother. Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the twentieth century.

Because of Apple cheeked Sally Field, I thought all nuns were friendly and could fly when I was little. This is not an easy read. It is so well written and descriptive I had flashbacks. I think it was important for her to write it the way that she did and not hide it anymore, but anyone with a history should be prepared. This book is not so much about an acting career so much as being a person. I felt connected with her. Well done.

Throwing this out there because I don't know how *I* feel and wonder what others think about trigger warnings. Some graphic descriptions of trauma took me unaware in this book. I think it's important that they be told as is, but there is no doubt it stirred up emotional flashbacks I wasn't prepared to deal with today. Part of me wishes for a little heads up about that much detail.

#24B4Monday @TheReadingMermaid @andrew65 @Clwojick @RadicalReader

HOTPock3tt Thank you so much for the heads up omg I hadn‘t heard that about this book 😖 3w
petersonks15 Sometimes I think trigger warnings go too far. The list of things that can trigger people could be endless and honestly it just gets to be overkill imo. However there are a few big things that I feel should get rigger warnings. Rape, abuse, animal abuse, brutal killing or abuse, etc. I feel like these have a different level of intensity and readers should be warned. (edited) 3w
petersonks15 Things graphic in nature should also be warned about. You can‘t protect everyone from everything, but I feel like these (and others like them that I can‘t think of right now) should be givens. (edited) 3w
See All 12 Comments
TheReadingMermaid That's a very interesting topic. So do you think that book should come with trigger warnings on the back of the book? Maybe something like how CDs come with their parental advisory warnings? 3w
cobwebmoth I have mixed feelings about trigger warnings. I don't want to upset someone by not warning them, but it's sometimes hard to know what will trigger another person. For example, someone warned about a possible trigger in a book I'm currently reading, but it wasn't at all triggering for me, but they didn't warn me about something else and I found that thing very upsetting.🤷‍♀️ 3w
LibrarianRyan Most days I hate trigger warnings. I see it as self banning of books. But some people are more sensitive. But then again, if we avoid sensitive issues are we really dealing with those issues. I‘m not sure. I know ahead of time I won‘t read a book where a dog dies, but if I knew about that in every book I were ever wanting to read, I might miss a lot. See I have no real answer either. 3w
Eggbeater @TheReadingMermaid I don't think it should ever be mandatory for the author to have it on there, but maybe they could elect to just so readers are prepared and don't read graphic rape scenes on the bus. 3w
Eggbeater I don't know. It's possible I am too sensitive. 3w
cobwebmoth Also, I'm really sorry that you are having to deal with being reminded of traumatic feelings. *hug* 3w
Larkken I def appreciate warnings. I deal very poorly with rape scenes, and I'm not sure there's a way to deal well with them...? Sorry you were blindsided like that. 3w
Clwojick It‘s definitely a hard topic. I don‘t feel strongly one way or another. I tend to make note of warnings by other who‘ve read the book, but I don‘t pay attention to anything being listed by the author. The only trigger that really gets me is detailed animal abuse. I would atleast like I bit of a warning so I can choose to skip that part, or skip the whole book. 3w
Andrew65 Some themes I find very difficult or impossible to read. Child abuse for example. 3w

I‘m a little surprised she spent more time on Burt R than on both of her marriages. I love seeing the hard choices of a mother and the craving for memorable work as an actor. Her relationship with her own mother provides fabulous insight into the woman behind the actor. Isn‘t that what a memoir should do - illume face hidden behind the mask?

Ultimately, a quick, intriguing read that leaves you informed w/o the residual gossip monger feeling!

BBooks She probably couldn't get published is she didn't write about Burt... 3mo

Vulnerable!

Everything about this was raw, introspective, personal and written in Field‘s on words. To say I‘m a huge fan is an understatement. But, if you‘re looking for reflections on an award-winning career, I‘m afraid you won‘t find them here as Sally focuses more on the moments in between when insecurities run high and confidence runs low.

Sally Field's childhood was not good, certainly, but she focused on just sharing negative experiences which became tedious & depressing. I wish she would've balanced it out a bit better because instead of loving her more I ended up kind of disliking her!🙈😳 FYI: Most of the book takes place in her youth up until the filming of Smokey and the Bandit. After that most movies only get mentioned by name but not the experience of working on them.

GypsyKat Good review! I‘ve been on the fence about this one, and I‘m thinking of just skipping it. 4mo

Unpopular opinion.

Although I admire Sally Field for opening up and addressing the difficult times in her life, there were many parts of this book I found to be boring and repetitive. Her descriptions of the anxiety and loneliness she felt throughout life were heartbreaking. She is a brave soul for discussing her childhood abuse, but the book wasn't as interesting as I wanted it to be.

LKstagemanager I‘m listening to the audiobook, read by Sally Field herself. Maybe I‘m finding it more interesting because it‘s her voice. 4mo
Addison_Reads @LKstagemanager I probably would have enjoyed it more hearing her read it. Sometimes when reading memoirs, I lose the emotion behind the words, so when I can, I do prefer to hear the author read their own story. 4mo

I love Sally‘s work but her memoir showed the sides of her the public didn‘t see, for better or worse. She‘s human, and she tells some stories in this that are terrifying & heartbreaking. She makes mistakes, she‘s brash, impulsive, and at times I want to shake her. Not for the faint of heart. If you‘re expecting a love letter to any of her TV work, opt out.

5☆ Sally is very candid in her book, + like most of us she didn‘t go through life so easily + she doesn‘t hold back here telling you that. I admire her ownership over her life making it unlike other star memoirs w/her book aptly named In Pieces, that‘s exactly what it is. Real. Sally telling it fiercely honest stripping herself bare. Captivating, unexpected + deeply emotional In Pieces allows readers see her beyond her roles played in Hollywood.❤️

I like Sally Field in many of her roles. I was excited to learn more about her and hear about her experience in many of the films I love. Sadly for me, it had a very negative energy. I commend her for sharing her story, I love a good memoir, but I don't think this is one I'd recommend to many. If you're a die hard Sally Field fan then go for it. If you grew up loving Gidget and The Flying Nun, proceed with caution.

A wonderful introspective & heartfelt memoir in which Fields reflects on it all unflinchingly, raw & sincere in her assessment of not only her life & her craft, but most profoundly of herself & all that she's lived through, strived for, & deservedly achieved.
