Becoming Mrs. Lewis
Becoming Mrs. Lewis: A Novel | Patti Callahan
38 posts | 24 read | 58 to read
In a most improbable friendship, she found love. In a world where women were silenced, she found her voice. From New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan comes an exquisite novel of Joy Davidman, the woman C. S. Lewis called my whole world. When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewisknown as Jackshe was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasnt holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford don and the beloved writer of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters. Embarking on the adventure of her life, Joy traveled from America to England and back again, facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, and against all odds, finding a love that even the threat of death couldnt destroy. In this masterful exploration of one of the greatest love stories of modern times, we meet a brilliant writer, a fiercely independent mother, and a passionate woman who changed the life of this respected author and inspired books that still enchant us and change us. Joy lived at a time when women werent meant to have a voiceand yet her love for Jack gave them both voices they didnt know they had. At once a fascinating historical novel and a glimpse into a writers life, Becoming Mrs. Lewis is above all a love storya love of literature and ideas and a love between a husband and wife that, in the end, was not impossible at all.

4⭐
And excellent story about how Joy Davidman and CS Lewis meet and marry. The author did a lot of research, so even though this is fiction, there is a lot of fact in the tale.

megnews I‘ve had this on my tbr for awhile and it‘s been calling to me lately. Glad to hear it‘s so good. 1mo

I was interested in reading this book because I am a fan of C.S. Lewis. I hadn‘t heard of Joy Davidman before, so I was curious to learn more about her.

This book was incredible. It beautifully depicted the relationship between Lewis and Davidman. Their romance was unconventional but epic. The love they had for one another is truly remarkable.

This book was written so well. Callahan allowed you to feel the pain and love that Joy had felt throughout her life. The only thing I wish, was I wish I had knee more about Joy Lewis. The love that her and C.S. Lewis had was so great. They loved each other through all and more so.

Before I joined Litsy, I didn't have a proper bookshelf. I sure appreciate the community here. The books on the top shelf are the ones that I want to read and of course order don't include this on my Kindle app. I'm never bored!

Snuggling up with this read today 👠🧣💃❤️ I would definitely recommend this if you are a fan of C.S Lewis (and maybe secretly wanted to be his pen pal in the 50‘s).

What an enchanting read! Such great story telling, all based on research. It‘s a peak into the life of C.S. LEWIS and his inspiration for his books.

“And isn‘t it odd... how he states that misery feels much the same as joy at first feels?”

Great writing. Loved all the quotes to set the tone at the beginning of each chapter. Loved getting to learn about Joy and in turn learn more about CS Lewis from it. However, first half was painfully slow 😬

This book explores the life of a courageous woman, Joy Davidman, who perseveres through her struggles, lets faith change her life, and finds a friendship and love she never expected. It's a beautifully told story, and I loved it and highly recommend it to fans of C.S. Lewis, historical fiction, and ultimately, romance.

This is just what I was needing. I‘ve read many of Lewis‘ books and it‘s really specialty hear about Joys life and how their friendship blossomed into love. Also, seeing Lewis as a real person who knew him, sees him is refreshing.

I‘ve read only three titles of the Narnia series, and only two of C.S. Lewis‘s non-fiction books. I watched Shadowlands once and didn‘t really enjoy it. I never visited Oxford, despite living in Britain for 22 years. What do I know about the former Atheist turned Christian? How much would I need to know in order to enjoy Becoming Mrs. Lewis? #Christfic #hisfic

#februarywrapup I only finished 4 books this month but started 4 others. Considering we were sick 3 of the 4 weeks this month I guess that is ok. My favorite book was Becoming Mrs Lewis!! 😍😍 I will reread this book several times in my life. Least favorite was Beartown. I guess anything with sports I should just stay away from it 🤷🏻‍♀️2 books towards #mmdchallenge

I was a little hesitant about this book because it could have gone really badly, but it was beautiful. And now, of course, I want to read and reread everything Lewis wrote and see if I can find some of Joy‘s writings too. I heard Joy‘s son interviewed recently and when asked about this book, he said it was more true to her story than biographies of her life.

BECOMING MRS. LEWIS is a fascinating historical love story of two literary giants. Joy was a intelligent and strong woman with a voice far ahead of her time. Patti Callahan Henry has recreated the exquisite details of the improbable friendship and ultimate romance between two people a world apart geographically, spiritually, and emotionally. https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/blog/becoming-mrs-lewis

Oh my goodness this book was better than I ever could have imagined it could be! I was engrossed in Joy Davidman‘s life from the first 20 pages! The way the author describes everything you feel that you are there with Joy in the common room at the Kilns (CS Lewis‘s house) watching him stoke the fire while they read and he smokes a pipe. I have to watch the movie shadowlands now and find more books on Joy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ All the stars!!!

Patti Callahan was at my vaguely local bookstore, Page & Palette, tonight. She was fabulous! There were tons of people there, and she talked to us like she knew us all. Best of all, when I mentioned I‘d heard her a couple of years ago at the Alabama Library Association Conference, she said, “Isn‘t that going to be in Point Clear next year?” A non-librarian knew the upcoming location of a library conference!

I had high hopes for this book after hearing Patti Callahan talk about it while she was still writing it. Thankfully, I was not disappointed in this fictional exploration of the relationship between Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis. Callahan tells this story in a way that keeps you interested and allows you to empathize with both Davidman and Lewis.

We got back late last night from a long trip encompassing a conference in Greenville, SC, a weekend trip to Beaufort, a week long conference in Charleston, and a two day trip to Tybee Island and Savannah. I took two days off work for rest, and it‘s raining, so I‘m lying in bed switching between these two books.

This book was so beautiful and raised many existential questions in my heart. My reason for giving the book 4 instead of 5 stars, is that it made me sad to read about Joy‘s years of loving Jack, when her love was not reciprocated. She embodies such strength as a wife, mother, poet and writer, but as a lover she came across as weak. I also have trouble idealizing their love story when he made her feel so rejected. #netgalley

Looking forward to reading this sometime soon. It is historical fiction about Joy Davidman, who married CS Lewis later in life. Excited to read a book focused on her life and the unlikely love between Joy and Jack. Got to hear author Patti Callahan speak last night and it was so great to hear her enthusiasm.

Juuuust a bit captivated right now by books about Joy Davidman, otherwise known as the wife of C.S Lewis. Rewatched the movie Shadowlands, of course—my first encounter with Joy. 😭But there‘s SO much more to this passionate, ambitious, and brilliant writer‘s fascinating life story.

wordslinger42 I just watched Shadowlands not long ago! Such a great movie! I had no idea there was a book about her!! 1y
AdeleReads @wordslinger42 Shadowlands is such a beautiful movie. And the biographies about / recent novel based on Joy reveal the depths of their courtship as well as her life long before she met her beloved Jack (e.g. the movie makes it seem like they‘re almost strangers when they meet, but they had been writing wonderful and soulful letters to each other long before that!) (edited) 1y
