“Curiosity is a luxury for the financially secure…. I began to experience the most powerful advantage of money: the ability to think of things besides money.”

“He said positive liberty is self-mastery—the rule of the self, by the self. To have positive liberty, he explained, is to take control of one‘s own mind; to be liberated from irrational fears and beliefs, from addictions, superstitions and all other forms of self-coercion.”

Such a practical & helpful read for those in the midst of ‘cultivating holy curiosity‘, and also more mature Christians needing a reminder & reset back at ground zero. Also, I appreciated that Mathis was direct when compiling this book by including a lot of writing clips from other authors instead of trying to reword & regurgitate what was already previously ‘said best‘.

“I want a pain I understand instead of the one I don‘t. I want a pain that has a beginning and an end, not one that goes on forever and cuts all the way to the bone.”

I liked this 50/50. LOVED the voice from Rills perspective. But thought the family dynasty attorney girl perspective was pretty cheesy - which is half the book, soooo.. 😬🤷🏻‍♀️

“Dramatic circumstances, such as those in which they and other new lovers in the city now found themselves, have a habit of creating dramatic emotions, and furthermore the curfew served to conjure up and effect similar to that of a long distance relationship, and long distance relationships are well-known for their potential to heighten passion, at least for a while, just as fasting is well known to heighten one‘s appreciation for food.“

Kaye Your pup is pretty. What kind is it and what‘s his name ? 5y
BitchinBooks @Kaye thank you 😊 she is an Aussie named Nancy ❤️ 5y
Kaye Our neighbors have one of those, but it looks a bit bigger. I know nothing about dogs because I‘ve never had one, but theirs is really bushy looking , like maybe it needs brushed or a haircut ? I‘m not sure but it‘s really puffy looking. It seems to be the nicest dog. It never barks, stays in the yard and doesn‘t chase people. I don‘t know if it‘s a man or lady dog, that‘s why I‘m calling it an it. 5y

“And isn‘t it odd... how he states that misery feels much the same as joy at first feels?”

Great writing. Loved all the quotes to set the tone at the beginning of each chapter. Loved getting to learn about Joy and in turn learn more about CS Lewis from it. However, first half was painfully slow 😬

“Kids are jumping out the windows of burning buildings, falling to their deaths. And we think the problem is that they are jumping...we‘ve tried to find ways to get them to stop jumping. Convince them that burning alive is better than leaving when the shit gets too hot for them to take.”• Mixed emotions over here: Quick read. Love his writing. Super depressing. Too many stories & characters to keep track of, tho they all tie together in the end.

The Chemist was no comparison to Twilight— not bad, not good, but just meh. I do think it should‘ve been shorter simply bc it easily ‘could-have-been‘ & without sacrificing anything or any meat. Also, it was a book club read (and I‘m the one that submitted this book for reading) and I was very disappointed that there were no pre-written book club discussion questions by Meyers or on her website :/

In the back of the book, “A Note From The Author” explains exactly what I was hoping this book would be. but it missed the mark 😭 I also wish my girl, Francine, would go back to historical fiction. I think part of it is that I just have such high expectations for Francine Rivers that I get disappointed if the book isn‘t life changing lol 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not as quick or addictive of a read as The Nightingale, but still an awesome book worth reading. It brought me back to memories of harsh winters in Wyoming - not Alaska by any means - but the thoughts I always have had in awe of how tough my ancestors had to be to make the trek to Wyoming long ago & what in the world possessed them to plant our family there.

The more I think about this race baiting, no plot, shallow book the more it angers me. This book is a slap in the face to anyone that adopts a child of a different race. I was super excited to read this book but clearly will not be reading another book of Ng's in the future.

Hari‘s attempt to brainwash people into thinking socialism is the cure for depression, completely taints the rest of what-would-be legitimate arguments. I wanted to give Lost Connections one star because of how infuriating it is that Hari politisizes depression.
BUT, upon reflection - it did connect some dots in my own struggles. I‘d recommend this book to employers. There‘s a wealth of information that an employer could apply to work environment
