Payment in Blood | Elizabeth A George
11 posts | 30 read | 5 to read
The career of playwrite Joy Sinclair comes to an abrupt end on an isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands when someone drives an eighteen-inch dirk through her neck. Called upon to investigate the case in a country where they have virtually no authority, aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, grapple for both a motive and a murderer. Emotions run deep in this highly charged drama, for the list of suspects soon includes Britain's foremost actress, its most successful theatrical producer, and the woman Lynley loves. He and Havers must tread carefully through the complicated terrain of human relationships, while they work to solve a case rooted in the darkest corners of the past and the unexplored regions of the human heart.

The Black House is set in the Outer Herbrides. A Payment in Blood, though set in England for the most part, ends off its coast in Skye. As seen in the map, Skye is south central & parallel to the Herbrides. #thingsincommon

The cast and crew of an upcoming play are under suspicion when the playwright is murdered. This is a good installment in the Inspector Lynley series but the real star of the story is his partner Detective Sergeant Havers.

I‘ve been reading up a storm lately, but I‘m way behind in reviews and posts, so apologies in advance for multiple posts! Excited about #NutsInMay! My goals: read my #Bookspin, my #DoubleSpin, finish the tagged book, and read two other books from the shelves by my bed. Onward!

Thanks for hosting, @Andrew65 !

This is one book I have been waiting to get to for a while, the 2nd book in the Inspector Lynley Series. They aren‘t quick reads with long chapters & big passages of text, but they are very well written and keep your interest throughout. An interesting dynamic between the four main characters in the series. This book left it at an interesting point in Lynley‘s life, intrigued to see what comes next.

Book 5 for #MidYearRush, Book 3 for #24B4Monday

Clwojick Another author that I don‘t believe I‘ve heard of before. I‘m going to have to check her out. 💚 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Nice review! I need to get back to this series too! 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, they are not quick reads. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I know! I think that's why I put them on hold but I did enjoy the first book. 4y
ErikasMindfulShelf I‘ve read every book in the series. I got hooked in 7th grade and had to read them all. 4y

When do we read this one?

EadieB @Tove_Reads 1st week of the month, we were reading Follett, Jane Casey, Mo Hayder so now we can change it to now and in January; Follett, Elizabeth George and Jussi Adler Olsen. 2nd week of the month can be First Group Read on LibraryThing, Camilla Lackberg and Mr. Book's monthly read challenge. 3rd week of the month can be Lars Kepler book and Maeve Binchy book. 4th week of the month can be Cara Black book and 2nd Group Read on LT. @Andrew65 (edited) 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s a heavy schedule. 😳 @Tove_Reads (edited) 4y

@EadieB and @Tove_Reads
Are we planning to read book 2 (tagged book) of the Inspector Lynley Series in November?
Also always forget which Ken Follett book we are meant to be reading. 😙
I also have down Maeve Binchy‘s Heart and Soul (my favourite one and meet Fiona again), Cara Black‘s Murder in Clichy. Are there any others I am forgetting?

Tove_Reads Night over Water. Because of my hols I won‘t be able to engage in other buddyreads than Follett, possible could read the George one next week. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Thanks for the title and enjoy your holidays. We could always leave the George book until you get back. 😊 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 November What Remains of Heaven by C S Harris
The Bone Garden by Kate Ellis
Night Over Water by Ken Follett
Murder in Clichy by Cara Black (2005)

Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, fancy me not adding in the Librarything books. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 My job to remind you! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB 😂 And you do it so well. 😊👍 5y
Crazeedi I don't know if I can do any but Cara Black book right now, even though I'd like to read a couple of these! I'm trying to get caught up with other books before end of year so I can jump in with the nordic books in 2020!! 5y
Crazeedi Love Follett and I've always wanted to read the E george series 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi It‘s great to have you with us fir the Cara Black Books and look forward to going all Nordic with you next year. I enjoyed the first Elizabeth George Book. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I've heard a lot of good about them, and I dont know but I may have read one, maybe the beginning of the series?? I'm going to have to check. And if I get my other books caught up I may jump in 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi You‘d be more than welcome. By the look of it likely to be December before we read th3 next one, at the earliest. @Tove_Reads @EadieB 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @crazeedi Start reading Dec 1? Or should we do December‘s Follett first? 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We usually start off the month with the Follett so I would suggest we do that first. @EadieB @Crazeedi 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Sure, always up for a Follett! It‘s Lie Down with Lions in December. And after Follett, it‘s time for George! Sounds like a plan! 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Lie Down With Lions is one i‘ve owned for quite a few years, will be good to get around to it, and then book 2 in the Inspector Lynley series to look forward to afterwards. Should be a great start to the month, and will need books to hide away from wall to wall election coverage in your face! 🥺 @Crazeedi @EadieB (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ok my books are ready to go but @Tove_Reads is saying something about starting in December. Is that an error? 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s for the Inspector Lynley Book (Book 2) and December‘s Ken Follett Book. So we‘ll be reading all the books on your list above in November apart from Payment in Blood which we will read the first week in December. @Tove_Reads (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB This will give me a bit more space to get to my Century of Reading Challenge, only Finished 63 so far. 😔 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Tove mentioned Lie Down with the Lions for December too. I've only finished 45 for the Century of Reading Challenge but I plan on carrying it over to 2020. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes so gives us a list to work through. 😊. I will definitely be continuing the century challenge into 2020. (edited) 5y
gradcat @EadieB @Crazeedi @Tove_Reads WOW! I didn‘t realize you guys were reading so many books together! I‘m with Diane—can‘t wait to start the Nordic books. I‘ve read all of the Elizabeth George books—love them! Lost interest in Follett years ago (can‘t remember why), and I never have read Binchy—at least, I don‘t think I have. I want to finish my Booked2019 prompts and keep up with the Cara Black books, and then start in with you guys for Nordic noir. 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat We also read three series this year written by Adrian McKinty, Jane Casey and Mo Hayder. That‘s where the idea to read three more next year came. We only have a few Maeve Binchy books left, but plenty Folletts. All three of us love Follett! @eadieb @andrew65 @crazeedi 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads I guess I should check out Follett again. I know I read a lot of Follett back in the 70s—my whole family was reading him then—but I fell out of love when he went into historical fiction. Others in my family liked them, but they, too, eventually quit Follett, so I don‘t really know much about his writing anymore. I know you guys got me very interested in Mo Hayder, but I haven‘t read any of them yet. Got to get on it! 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat We just love to read and keeps you motivated to progress on a series if you read alongside friends like you, @crazeedi, @Tove_Reads and @EadieB Also means you can discuss points. Loved the three series we read together. I have been hosting one Maeve Binchy Buddy Read a month for about a year and a half. I love her books - very different to most other books I read. I love the Irishness of them - she has a unique style. 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat The Ken Follett historical fiction books are great on audiobooks - such big books but I do love them. We are enjoying his standalone thrillers. Very much looking forward to the Nordic books, especially Jussi Adler Olsen. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat The Mo Hayder series was very good, almost like three series in one, like three different phases. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 @gradcat @EadieB @Tove_Reads I read many of Follett books over the years. I'd have to look at a list again to remember which ones, it was before LT and GR of course. I'm definitely going to check out the Lynley books. And @Tove_Reads the 3 you mentioned I've never heard of authors! Wow! So many new series for me!!! Now you all have to get into Donna Leon sometime 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi I read and enjoyed first Donna Leon and looking to target that series in 2020. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I'm in to reread for sure, and I never reread, but I have them because I couldn't give them away cause I love them so much, lol 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @crazeedi Been meaning time read Leon for years, but something had stopped me from reading them. Maybe the covers that are a bit too cliche romantic thingies, but I shouldn‘t judge the book by its cover! 5y
Crazeedi @Tove_Reads the covers are a bit cheesy at times, but I read on a recommendation from a blog, and I fell in love with them. So just a series to consider. If you've read Camilleri or martin walker series, hers are similar but different and so good 5y
Tove_Reads @crazeedi @gradcat @eadieb @andrew65 I think my first buddy read series here was Frieda Klein (looooive it) with Andrew and the second Shardlake with Andrew and Eadie. 4y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Two great series, and we‘ve now also finished the Jack Caffery Series by Mo Hayder and the Sean Duffy Series by Adrian McKinty (before he became the in thing). When Eadie gets hold of the last Written Maeve Kerrigan Book we‘ll also have finished that series. Great achievements. @EadieB @gradcat @Crazeedi 4y
gradcat @Tove_Reads I haven‘t heard of either of those, Frieda Klein & Shardlake, that you read with @EadieB & @Andrew65 ... what genre are they? I can‘t believe how many books I‘ve never heard of—WOW! About Donna Leon, I don‘t think the books are romantic at all, but I will say that about the tenth one I got sort of bored, but that may have been premature judgment on my part. I should probably go back to them. ♥️ 4y
Tove_Reads @gradcat OMG, Nicci French (a couple writing books) writes about Frieda Klein. One of the best series out there! Police, thriller, murder, crime. CJ Sansom writes the Shardlake series. Historical fiction, murder, crime. Set in the good old bloody days in England. Chunksters. 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 & @Crazeedi Yeah, I think I just really liked Follett‘s thrillers (they came before) so much that when his historical fiction came out, I just wasn‘t into it. I like historical fiction, but only by a very, very FEW authors. I think I might have to read the Mo Hayder books while you guys begin the Nordic series. I‘ve read so many of those that I figure I‘ll just jump in when you guys get to the ones I haven‘t read. 4y
gradcat @Crazeedi What is LT & GR? You lost me there. 😂 4y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Omigod! You guys are the absolute best at keeping me in the know on these thriller writers. I (and my mom) really appreciate that. We both love reading thrillers!! ♥️♥️ 4y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Goodreads and LibraryThing 4y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Yeah, I figured it out after a few minutes...you must think I‘m an idiot!! 😂🤣😂 4y
Crazeedi @Tove_Reads @gradcat I've read 2 or 3 shardlake @Andrew65 turned me on to him, but french I have not heard of! I love hearing about these great authors! And @gradcat leon just might not be your cup of tea! That happens! I absolutely devoured every one of her books 4y
gradcat @Crazeedi No, I really did like Commissario Brunetti, I promise! I can just be a bit fickle. I‘ve read several series in their entirety, but I don‘t finish all of the ones I start. Have you ever read any of Benjamin Black‘s (that‘s the pen name of John Banville) mysteries? I‘ve read all of those, & all of Elizabeth George‘s, & all of P. D. James‘ mysteries...and some others. But sometimes I just kind of stop. I don‘t know why. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi @Gradcat Nicki French writes great standalone psychological thrillers too. This is mostly probably the best known one. 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Some times if you read a lot of a series in quick succession you just need a break. 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Not Read any Benjamin Black. 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 Did you happen to see the television series called “Quirke”? It was a BBC One & RTE One crime drama. He‘s a pathologist in Dublin in the 1950s. 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat No but will check out the books. With reading we watch very little tv. 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 I had to watch because I read all of the books, but I haven‘t seen all of the episodes. I think I have one or two left, and there aren‘t very many. It starred Gabriel Byrne as the moody, troubled Quirke. 4y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb @gradcat @crazeedi I will read all books by Doris Lessing, I‘ve decided. Let me know if anyone is interested. 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I own about 8 Lessing books. I‘ll try reading her with you. 4y
EadieB @gradcat @Crazeedi I have probably all of Leon books. I have some Benjamin Black/John Banville. I have about 10 more Nicci French that I haven‘t read. I probably have all of PD James too. @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB @Tove_Reads @gradcat @Andrew65 I have Leon. None of the other authors mentioned. 4y
Tove_Reads @eadieb Yes! Oh, and planning on reading French as well. We‘ll never run out of authors... 4y
EadieB @gradcat Give me your address - I want to send you some books. 4y
gradcat @EadieB Should I put my address here? Or should I email you? I never know what I should do in these situations! But I thank you so much for thinking of me! My mother will take advantage of them, too! Thanks, Eadie! ♥️♥️♥️ 4y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Omigod, I love Doris Lessing!! When do you plan to do this? And how do they fit in with your current reads, considering they‘re not genre books? What made you decide on Lessing? Sorry, so many questions, I know...it‘s just that Lessing kind of comes out of left field compared to these authors. ♥️ 4y
EadieB You can email me if you want but do it right away as I am getting ready to go to post office and they are all packaged already. Eadieburke@comcast.net (edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Because I‘m going to Zimbabwe I started reading her books set there. Also, versatile author, many interesting books. I read most genres, only skip a few. I‘m ready to start in December, but can start later as well. 4y
gradcat @EadieB Okay, I just sent it. Thanks again, Eadie—you‘re fantastic! ♥️♥️♥️ 4y
gradcat @Tove_Reads I think it‘s a great idea, but I am slammed for the rest of the year because I‘m trying to finish Booked2019. If I finish early, I‘ll let you know, but would be happy to start in January. ♥️ 4y
EadieB @gradcat Thanks! I got your address. Going to the post office and I'll let you know what day you can expect your package. 4y
gradcat @EadieB Okay, Eadie, & thank you—you‘re so thoughtful! ♥️ 4y
EadieB Tuesday the 12th because Monday is Veterans Day and post office is closed. But Crazeedi got her books early so maybe you will get yours on Saturday. 4y
gradcat @EadieB Well, Eadie, I will be thrilled to get them whenever they come! And I thank you again for thinking of me—I‘m so excited (like a kid on Christmas morning 😂)!! ♥️♥️♥️ 4y

RaimeyGallant Adding! 5y
Cathythoughts @RaimeyGallant you know it‘s the second in this series 👍🏻the first is brilliant too 5y
Ruthiella I fell a little out of love with E. George around book 15 but her early stuff is great! I love the detail. 5y
Cathythoughts @Ruthiella book 15 !!!! You did very well & had a perfect right to fall out at that point .... I‘m still on book 2 & it‘s good , but book 1 is still my fave so far ... let‘s see what happens 5y
Ruthiella Deception in His Mind was the first one I read and it made me a huge fan of Barbara Havers. Then I had to go back and read the rest as best I could. I still read them but I think they‘ve gone down in quality from the early books. 5y

Loved it. Love a good British mystery and this one was full of scandalous details. I've been mad at Elizabeth George ever since the first book of hers I ever picked up included a child dying. But I'm glad I gave her another go. Can't wait to read more of Lynley and Havers. #booktober #helloctober

Lizpixie I have the whole series, it's fantastic! 8y
ScarletQuill I knew this wasn't the first in the series but it was early enough that I didn't mind. But i need a list! Have to read from start to finish! 8y
