The Book of Hidden Things
The Book of Hidden Things | Francesco Dimitri
21 posts | 12 read | 43 to read
From "one of the most significant figures of the last generation of fantasy", comes Francesco Dimitri's debut novel in English, an enthralling and seductive fantasy following four old friends and the secrets they keep. Four old school friends have a pact: to meet up every year in the small town in Puglia they grew up in. Art, the charismatic leader of the group and creator of the pact, insists that the agreement must remain unshakable and enduring. But this year, he never shows up. A visit to his house increases the friends' worry; Art is farming marijuana. In Southern Italy doing that kind of thing can be very dangerous. They can't go to the Carabinieri so must make enquiries of their own. This is how they come across the rumours about Art; bizarre and unbelievable rumours that he miraculously cured the local mafia boss's daughter of terminal leukaemia. And among the chaos of his house, they find a document written by Art, The Book of Hidden Things, that promises to reveal dark secrets and wonders beyond anything previously known. Francesco Dimitri's first novel written in English, following his career as one of the most significant fantasy writers in Italy, will entrance fans of Elena Ferrante, Neil Gaiman and Donna Tartt. Set in the beguiling and seductive landscape of Southern Italy, this story is about friendship and landscape, love and betrayal; above all it is about the nature of mystery itself.

"Don't you hate it sometimes? Being a grown-up. Get a job, get a better one, pay taxes, pay more taxes, same old, same old. We are only alive at weekends, the rest of the time, were hamsters in a wheel. And we can never quit spinning, cause there's always another bill, another mortgage, another... What the hell, another brat, to keep the wheel turning."

I learned my lesson in not judging a book by its cover. I thought the cover of this book looked very similar to the cover of "The Book of Lost Things" and set myself up for a very confusing roller coaster ride as this book is nothing like TBOLT. It was an interesting read, but definitely was not what I was expecting. This author has been deemed the "Italian Neil Gaiman," but I think that's quite a stretch.

I loved this book because I could not put it down, I read it at a time when I really needed to be swept up in something and these 3 friends‘ search for those missing childhood friend was exactly what I needed.

Another intriguing book that was part of my #SSS swap hosted deftly by @Avanders and sent by the one and only @Wonderwoman89 😁👍

Another new author for me to discover! The actual book itself is beautifully printed with an embossed cover. The story sounds fascinating: four life long friends, one goes missing and the discovery of an enigmatic Book

So much work to get done and now I just want to sit here and pore over these thoughtful gifts.

TrishMcCallister Oh I am SO intrigued by this cover 🤩 5y

Everyone in this book is an asshole, and I'm still not sure what I think. I was hooked on the mystery of it, but... I don't know. Despite the glowing reviews I've seen from bloggers I trust, I'm not sold on it.

4 friends agree to meet up every year and have done so for a long time. Only this time, one is missing and no one knows where he is. He left behind some mysterious clues and a self written book called “The Book of Hidden Things”. I‘m a little over half way done and we are just now picking up speed in the story. Looking forward to seeing the “Hidden Things”!

I‘m finding myself blown away by this book. It‘s way more than I was expecting. I can‘t really put into words how much I‘m enjoying it. It‘s mystery, fantasy, magic, mayhem — absolute chaos in book form. I cannot put it down.

The characters are unlovable yet wonderful, the intrigue has me hooked. 🖤✨🙊 #currentlyreading #fantasy #mystery #darkliterature #bookstamums #bookblogger #bookish #bibliophile

Late night thoughts... 🖤✨

So, I‘m 100 pages into The Book of Hidden Things and I can actually see the “Donna Tartt” ness that I was told about. It‘s not a patch on Tartt‘s writing but the plot and atmosphere has great The Secret History vibes and has kept me reading late into the night. I‘m eager to read more and see where this goes. For now, sleep, because I feel like a badgers arse. 🤦🏼‍♀️✨#currentlyreading #booklover #bibliophile #bookblog

It‘s been a long time coming but I‘m finally getting around to my backlogged review copies. Starting it off right with Francesco Dimitri‘s The Book of Hidden Things which is marketed as the lovechild of Donna Tartt and Neil Gaiman. You had me at Donna Tartt, of course! Huge thank you to @titan_books for sending me this beautiful looking book. #bookstamums #booklover #bookaddict #bookworm #bobliophile #bookish #bookblog

Quirkybookworm I disagree this book being as a lovechild if Donna Tart. But that‘s just me. I gave this book 0!to 1 star. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Quirkybookworm That‘s very unfortunate to hear. I was only interested because they said it was Donna Tartt - esque. Hopefully I‘ll enjoy it more than you did x 6y
Quirkybookworm I hope so too. Let me know when you‘re done so we can discuss this.😊 @Sophoclessweetheart 6y

This book pissed the hell out of me!

BibliophileArtichoke Because it was less than you expected, or because the subject matter really hit you? There‘s a definite difference. 6y
Quirkybookworm None. It was a crazy novel where you just want to smack most of the characters. I was dumb enough not to look at the front cover where there‘s a dead dog being hung. To be quite honest, I believe the author has a perverse thoughts getting his knockers off with the descriptions of dead animals being hung or shot, and etc. there isn‘t actually a storyline. More of a ramble with a stupid ending or if that‘s what‘s what you call an ending. Made n 6y
Quirkybookworm No sense at all. It‘s more of what WTH just I read??? @BibliophileArtichoke (edited) 6y
