The Paris Seamstress
The Paris Seamstress | Natasha Lester
How much will a young Parisian seamstress sacrifice to make her mark in the male-dominated world of 1940s New York fashion? From the bestselling author of A KISS FROM MR FITZGERALD and HER MOTHER'S SECRET. 1940. Parisian seamstress Estella Bissette is forced to flee France as the Germans advance. She is bound for Manhattan with a few francs, one suitcase, her sewing machine and a dream: to have her own atelier. 2015. Australian curator Fabienne Bissette journeys to the annual Met Gala for an exhibition of her beloved grandmother's work - one of the world's leading designers of ready-to-wear. But as Fabienne learns more about her grandmother's past, she uncovers a story of tragedy, heartbreak and secrets - and the sacrifices made for love. Crossing generations, society's boundaries and international turmoil, THE PARIS SEAMSTRESS is the beguiling, transporting story of the special relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter as they attempt to heal the heartache of the past. Praise for Natasha Lester: '[Lester's] engaging writing style and ability to create characters that connect with readers make her a welcome addition to the historical fiction market.' Herald Sun 'If you enjoy historical fiction (and even if you don't) you will love this book' SALLY HEPWORTH 'Hot on the heels of her well-deserved success with A Kiss from Mr. Fitzgerald, [Lester] again offers readers a strong-willed, determined heroine whose journey is as interesting, as it is inspiring' JODI GIBSON 'I love this book' RACHAEL JOHNS 'Stunning. Will have you captivated' LIZ BYRSKI 'Fascinating, evocative and meticulously researched.' ANNABEL ABBS, author of The Joyce Girl 'If you're mad about the roaring twenties and all things Gatsby, this romance will have you enchanted' Woman's Day 'At the novel's heart is the sparkling Evie, an endearing combination of intelligence, determination and naivety' West Australian

Oh dang, another HF in which I wish I read the author‘s note first to realize scoundrel Harry Thaw was an IRL person, and this was not a WWII story, but rather the 40s were used by the author to imagine a story where wacko men like Thaw were able to use their power to be truly horrible human beings with their impact lasting generations. … March #BookSpin published 2016-2019 @TheAromaofBooks

marleed BTW, Babe Paley is mentioned in this story. I‘m fascinated by her and love a Babe sighting in a book! 14mo
Read-y_Picker Stacked! I‘m intrigued 14mo
marleed @Read-y_Picker I would have read this differently- picked up on other details - had I read the author‘s note first. Instead, I was judging the book by the title and imagining a pile of spy stuff sewn into garments and passed about France - and that‘s not what this story was! 14mo

Finished this wonderful book late last night. I wasn‘t sure that I would really like it as it didn‘t grab me right at first. But when it did I was hooked! Just a beautiful story set in WWII but not really about the war, more about the characters and how past issues can effect them throughout life and effect others. Beautifully written with characters you fall in love with. Great historical fiction!

I was hoping to already have this book finished but my minor surgery really messed me up. I‘ve never had trouble with anesthesia before but this time I was extremely sick coming out of it. To make matters worse my tongue had gotten stuck between the breathing tube & my teeth so my tongue is (still) swollen, it should be better soon. Hopefully now that the dizziness is mostly gone I can read a bit instead of sleeping all the time.

SassyBookworm My corn bag which is a homemade heating pad has become my new best friend. 5y

I had a horrible time coming out of anesthesia, I was in the hospital 5-6 hours longer than normal bc I was so sick. Plus my tongue had gotten pinned between the breathing tube & my teeth during surgery so it‘s very swollen. Not the speedy recovery I had hoped for 🤕 nor have I felt well enough to read 5y

9/10 Great read, characters are likeable and interesting. What starts as a idyllic picture of life in early WWII era Paris, takes an unexpected dive into American fashion in New York. Some of the time jumps between early 1940's and modern day can be confusing, but in the long run it all makes sense.

The premise had me all in, 1940‘s so much yes! I think for me I was hoping for more then just a fashion book. It was ok but it left me wanting something a little bit more.

What captured my interest was twofold. The historical fiction piece was well researched and powerful. The other part of this story which resonated with me were the relationships. There was a huge amount of drama that went along with the MC‘s in this story as well as secrets that were steeped in heartache and misery. To soften the story there was romance & I found it a bit fanciful. Full review at www.thegenreminx.com #TheGenreMinxBookReviews

I really liked this. I got caught up in it early on, and I was kept wanting to read to find out. I don‘t feel like there were many twists, but I thought the secrets were unraveled very nicely. One thing that did come as a surprise to me was in the author‘s note about what events were historically true

Occasionally I work in our office that is really close to home, and close to a bookshop. Depending on your perspective that could be seen as a blessing or a too hard to resist curse
