A Clash of Kings: A Song of Ice and Fire
A Clash of Kings: A Song of Ice and Fire | George R. R. Martin
THE BOOK BEHIND THE SECOND SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES, AN ORIGINAL SERIES NOW ON HBO. A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK TWO In this thrilling sequel to A Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin has created a work of unsurpassed vision, power, and imagination. A Clash of Kings transports us to a world of revelry and revenge, wizardry and warfare unlike any we have ever experienced. A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war. It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel . . . and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles. Amazon.com Review How does he do it? George R.R. Martin's high fantasy weaves a spell sufficient to seduce even those who vowed never to start a doorstopper fantasy series again (the first book--A Game of Thrones--runs over 700 pages). A Clash of Kings is longer and even more grim, but Martin continues to provide compelling characters in a vividly real world. The Seven Kingdoms have come apart. Joffrey, Queen Cersei's sadistic son, ascends the Iron Throne following the death of Robert Baratheon, the Usurper, who won it in battle. Queen Cersei's family, the Lannisters, fight to hold it for him. Both the dour Stannis and the charismatic Renly Baratheon, Robert's brothers, also seek the throne. Robb Stark, declared King in the North, battles to avenge his father's execution and retrieve his sister from Joffrey's court. Daenerys, the exiled last heir of the former ruling family, nurtures three dragons and seeks a way home. Meanwhile the Night's Watch, sworn to protect the realm from dangers north of the Wall, dwindle in numbers, even as barbarian forces gather and beings out of legend stalk the Haunted Forest. Sound complicated? It is, but fine writing makes this a thoroughly satisfying stew of dark magic, complex political intrigue, and horrific bloodshed. --Nona Vero From Publishers Weekly The second novel of Martin's titanic Song of Ice and Fire saga (A Game of Thrones, 1996) begins with Princess Arya Stark fleeing her dead father's capital of King's Landing, disguised as a boy. [...] In between [the beginning and the end], her actions map the further course of a truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last 10 years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect by the scrupulous and unscrupulous alike. Standout characters besides Arya include Queen Cersei, so lacking in morals that she becomes almost pitiable; the queen's brother, the relentlessly ingenious dwarf Tyrion Lannister; and Arya's brother, Prince Brandon, crippled except when he runs with the wolves in his dreams. The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail that dramatically increases narrative length even as it aids suspension of disbelief; for the comparatively modest role of magic (although with one ambitious young woman raising a trio of dragons, that may change in future volumes)... Martin may not rival Tolkien or Robert Jordan, but he ranks with such accomplished medievalists of fantasy as Poul Anderson and Gordon Dickson. Here, he provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetitesand this is only the second course of a repast with no end in sight. Author tour. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Ugh Tyrion come on... No wonder the north prefers to have it's own king. They're the only people who understand what the north is really like and what they have to protect King's Landing from (if the Watch fails).

Does anyone else just completely fall asleep during the Jon Snow chapters? I'm sorry, but I'm only here for Renly, Sansa, and Tyrion right now. I never thought that Jon was particularly interesting.

My gorgeous illustrated edition of A Clash of Kings came in today. I'm really happy that they seem to be rereleasing all of them in illustrated editions. I hate it when only the first book gets the fancy treatment. I'm a little OCD when matching books in a series.
There are nice colored maps for end pages and I love the illustrations. I usually prefer them in color but the black and whites are really fantastic. I'm not sure which I like better 💙

Scochrane26 I‘m ocd about my book series, too. 3mo

Oh boy let‘s be honest...

Some characters are MUCH more intriguing than others. I seriously could have skipped past some chapters and been okay with this one.

This story is still fun, and there are certainly memorable quotes and scenes as the fight continues for the real king to take throne.

I just could listen to Danaerys and Arya all day. There are also parts of Catelynn and Cersei that I enjoy. Some other (*cough* bran) mehhh...

MrT I gave up after the first book. Too many characters. Some you never hear of again and tbh the writing style is a lot to be desired. 3mo
Naltez I totally agree with @MrT ... I couldn‘t get through book one and normally this is the type of thing I would love 3mo

If not for the TV 📺 series, I wouldn‘t have been able to visualise the battle of blackwater description in the book. The books are a whole new thing, it is enriching my experience as a GoT hardcore fan. The entry of Ramsay Bolton is pure evil. And I just learnt Tyrion is a much better fighter than what‘s shown in the TV, he even fancies getting a knighthood from his brother Jamie 😀 how sweet! And Arya is Roose Bolton‘s cupbearer at Harrenhall 😮

BGam Such interesting names for ships. I was wondering if they were a whole new people being introduced, new dialogues or names of places. 😬 So many side characters, lords and princes, wards etc, I realised they were not required for me to keep in memory but some needed memorisation as I had to keep going back to recall the person. The book is huge but somehow the story grew on me and now I can‘t wait to start the Storm of Swords. 3mo

There‘s something about ASOIF series- no matter how bulky it is, literally and figuratively, one can‘t put it down. As I read in one review, it‘s like a drug....the deeper you go, you want more and more of it. once you have it in your hand, you can‘t put it away 🤨

Resuming my read after keeping it stranded for a month while I went on to greener pastures of other more simpler and over the night readings.. series like ASOIF should be chewed slowly to taste each and every ingredient properly like a fine dine meal ☺️

I really loved the majority of the show but after reading the first book and currently reading the second book I have to say the show at no point at all manages to come even remotely close the books (plus a lot of questionable choices they made in the show are not in the books which is 👌). If you are into fantasy and haven't read the books already I highly recommend it.

"Pale flames licked at the grey sky. Dark smoke rose, twisting and curling... Many and more would burn before this war was done."
Oh Ser Davos... you are so right ? I am hoping that George R. R. Martin keeps his ending from the television show when writing his books. It made the most sense, especially with how Dany is portrayed in the show. Book Dany is very different, so I'm intrigued by the kind of development she will show to get there.

I always describe these books as “ya know how like, you have a weird dream, and it makes perfect sense while you‘re having it, but then you wake up and try to make sense of it, and it makes no sense at all? Well, GRRM somehow finds a way to write about these crazy dreams in a way that actually make sense.” Esp. in the first book. Only issue I have is that I get tired of reading entire paragraphs describing every detail of every character‘s outfit.

Books and beers for the end to a very busy 4th of July weekend! It was nice having company for the past four days but I am ready for some much needed alone time.

Re-read of book 2. So many characters that I love, and one that I really don‘t. Catelyn‘s chapters annoyed me 5 years ago during my first read, and they still do!

Paying special attention to Bran and Sansa now that I‘ve seen the show‘s finale. Highly entertained spotting the minute differences between show and book.
