They reach the Nightfort, a source of fearsome tales. Meera goes to the top to look around. No way to make it over the Wall to the haunted forest. There‘s a gate, but it‘s blocked by snow &ice
Once Nightfort was ruled by the Night‘s King who bound his Brothers through sorcery &made sacrifices to the Others
Bran hears footfalls. But it‘s not the Rat Cook it is Sam& Gilly. Sam knows he is Jon‘s brother. Sam talks to the weirwood &opens the gate

Bklover I was so relieved when Bran found Sam and Gilly. At least they are kind people! 1mo
5feet.of.fury @Bklover glad the found eachother! some good news for once! 1mo
BethM @Bklover @5feet.of.fury agreed! I thought this chapter was really immersive 1mo

They come to a village, see a tower on an island. The land belongs to the Night‘s Watch, abandoned because of the wildling threat
They take a hidden pathway to the tower. Discuss getting to the Wall -going to Castle Black would be too risky
A rider comes &stays in the ruin of the inn. As the storm comes, other riders arrive. They don‘t have any way to secure the tower. Hodor becomes upset. Bran reaches into his mind the way he does to Summer.

BethM Cliffhanger end of the chapter 2mo
BooksNBowls Did anyone catch Jojen called Bran “your grace”?? Interesting!!! So can Bran warg into humans now? Kind of an eerie chapter overall. Personally, being stuck in a tower surrounded by water doesn‘t sound like a fun time 😅 2mo
5feet.of.fury @BooksNBowls I missed that “your grace” bit! 2mo

Bran, Jojen, Meera &Hodor travel through mountains, staying away from the roads. The Kingsroad is dangerous to all now that there‘s no Stark at Winterfell. Meera tells a story of The Knight of the Laughing Tree as they walk, a crannogman turned into a knight by the green men at The Isle of Faces defeats his bullies in a tourney & disappears (the tourney was won by the dragonknight).
Bran thinks he could go to Isle of Faces &be turned into a knight

BethM What do we think the story was about? Jojen seemed insistent that Bran should‘ve heard it before. 2mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM I am very curious, I was trying to recall if it tied back to any other stories or songs OR the actual tourney. 2mo

BooksNBowls @BethM it‘s the story of the past- Lyanna (she wolf), knight of the kingsguard(Jaime), wild wolf (Brandon stark), king (Aerys), dragon knight (rhaegar) I‘m sure there‘s more representation I haven‘t put together yet (edited) 2mo
Bklover @BethM I wondered that too. Seemed like it kept coming up. @BooksNBowls - that‘s brilliant! (edited) 2mo
BethM @BooksNBowls I feel like I need to reread it now! 2mo
BooksNBowls @BethM I reread it and found a lot more the second time around! Maybe that‘s why Jojen thought bran should know it because it‘s true past events? 2mo

Bean seeing through Summer‘s eyes meets a wolf pack devouring deer. He goes after the pack leader. The prince was larger but his cousin has a pack. In the end he claims their prey. Hodor wakes Bran in his own body. Bran is sullen, as the wolf he can run &be prince of the woods. Jojen reminds him again not to lose himself in Summer. They debate the best plan, &Bran choose to go to the Wall to find his crow.

BooksNBowls Poor Bran! Seeing him slowly lose himself and struggling between 2 bodies is so sad!! I can‘t wait to see if he runs into Jon beyond the wall. 3mo
5feet.of.fury @BooksNBowls 😢 I know poor kid 3mo

BethM @BooksNBowls I think he wants to lose himself 3mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM I agree. between his injury, being separated from his whole family, losing his home… not much to try to hold onto in his real life. 3mo
BooksNBowls @5feet.of.fury and I suppose that‘s true for each character too. Pretty bleak…. 3mo

Bran dreams through his third eye & sees Winterfell burning, everyone dead. Meera &Jojen caution him against staying wolf too long. They emerge from their hiding spot to see Winterfell burned just as he said. Dying, Luwin tells Rickon & Bran to separate. As they leave Bran thinks “Winterfell‘s not dead, it‘s just broken like me”

& we‘re done #ReadingWesteros will return with A Storm of Swords ⚔️ 1/22/24

Bklover I just love this! I really love when Bran is the wolf, although I don‘t want him to forget how to talk! 😶. Oh, and I had actually forgotten where they were hiding 🫣 4mo
Roary47 This would have been the biggest spoiler when documenting chapters. I love that they are okay, and glad they are splitting up just in case. I hope Theon is actually dead and not playing possum. I strongly dislike him along with Joff and Cersei. 4mo

Doppoetry I am glad that Bran is safe and hiding where they did was smart 4mo
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 I know! GRRM had us going for a few chapters. 4mo
5feet.of.fury @Bklover @Doppoetry I didn‘t remember that‘s where they hid, it was risky, but no one had a reason to go down there. 4mo
BethM I love that line! I didn‘t remember/know this as it‘s different than the show. 4mo
Sargar114 A great twist there! I had forgotten that‘s where they hid, so was happy at the reveal. Thank you for hosting @5feet.of.fury 4mo

Through Summer‘s eyes, Bran climbs a tree in wolf form & falls. He awakes in his tower &believes now what Jojen told him. He recalls the prophecy “The sea has come.” He calls for Hodor or Osha & is stunned when Theon comes instead. Theon has taken Winterfell but the people are still Bran‘s. it falls to the young prince to decide to yield or fight. Theon surveys the people, including prisoner Reek who pledges himself to Theon. As does Osha.

Robb sends a letter of victory at Oxbow. The Frey‘s uncle has died & they bicker about who will be heir, Bran is reminded of the green dream. Now Bran believes &Jojen brings the profecy “it is the sea that comes”. Bran tries to warn everyone. Alebelly believes & refuses to bathe. Ser Rodrik killed Ramsay Bolton(After he married Lady Horwood, took her lands, killed her)his servant Reek is prisoner. Another dream shows Bran & Rickon killed by Reek.

Bklover Green dreams=Very Bad. Also, Bran again seems very young in this chapter (which he is) after seeming much older in earlier chapters. His reactions to the green dreams are very childlike, warning everyone about the floods without considering how impossible that sounds. 5mo
5feet.of.fury @Bklover I agree sometimes he seems age appropriate & sometimes too understanding of the world -even considering the education he has from the Maester. 5mo

BethM @Bklover @5feet.of.fury it‘s a weird dichotomy for sure. I‘m sitting here screaming in my head Theon! I also don‘t remember the part about foreseeing the boys death. 5mo
Bklover @BethM I don‘t remember that either! 5mo
Roary47 Green dreams seem so scary to dream through. I wonder if his mom and dad were there (dad being still alive that is) if he would have more confidence? He is young, but he is also playing a part while his brother is away. 5mo

Bran is playing with Meera. Bran contemplates going with her to see Greywater Watch‘s moving castle. Meera encourages him because her brother Jojen has had a prophetic dream, the crow came to him after an illness as he came after Bran‘s fall. Jojen pressures Bran to talk of his own dreams & open his 3rd eye. But Maester Luwin tells him there‘s no such thing as magic, & Bran values his opinion even if he wishes magic were inside himself.

BethM Adults don‘t know everything. I‘d like more backstory on joejen and meera. 5mo
Bklover This is such a frustrating chapter!!! 5mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM yes! And this moving castle! @Bklover I know! Poor Bran! 5mo
Roary47 Magic seems to be present in this world so it would be really cool if Bran really is in bodied to Summer when he is sleeping. That would be an amazing addition to this story. 5mo

The 2 Walders are still jerks
Bran meets with guests as the Stark in Winterfell. Manderly brings the idea for Robb‘s coinage & warships. Lord Bolton‘s Bastard &his servant Reek amassing men at Dreadfort, intentions unclear. Bran tries to matchmake for Lady Hornwood as she has no heir, as others make claim for her lands.Bran suggests they fall to Lord Hornwoods bastard(thinking of Jon)

Bran hears of Stannis‘s letter &it helps him remember his fall

5feet.of.fury “The things I do for love,” 5mo
BethM Been keeping up just in poor cell reception until last night! This felt like filler until the very end 5mo

5feet.of.fury @BethM agreeee sometimes I really struggle to pare down the synopsis but not this chapter 5mo
Roary47 Oh man. I‘m glad he remembers now. I wonder if this will change how Robb handles Jaime as his captive right now? 5mo
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 def strengthens Stannis‘s claims too 5mo

Summer & Shaggydog are howling in Winterfell & reminding Bran of the past losses, he worries for his brothers & he starts to howl too. He tells Maester Luwin of his dreams; about being a wolf &about the weirwood.
The wolves are kept captive because Rickon‘s Shaggydog bit 1 of the Frey children. Big Walder & Little Walder had left Bran out of their game & struck Rickon with a stick & the wolf took offense.
Bran still doesn‘t remember his fall.
