On the Come Up
On the Come Up | Angie Thomas
This is the highly anticipated second novel by Angie Thomas, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning The Hate U Give.Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least get some streams on her mixtape. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died right before he hit big, Bri's got massive shoes to fill. But when her mom unexpectedly loses her job, food banks and shut-off notices become as much a part of her life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it--she has to make it.On the Come Up is Angie Thomas's homage to hip hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are, and not who everyone expects you to be; and of the desperate realities of poor and working class black families.Brilliant, insightful, full of heart, this novel is another modern classic from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation.

This was another read from April (still lots more catch up posts left). I got this as an ARC years ago and I can't believe I waited until this year to finally read it. WORTH ??THE ??HYPE?? If you liked "The Hate U Give" you'll love this. I finished in just a few days, it was so good. Would make a good audiobook because of all the music throughout. Fun fact: the movie adaption will be available on Hulu tomorrow?! ? Can't wait to watch!

Reggie Yeah, Angie Thomas doesn‘t disappoint. I love all 3 of her books I‘ve read. 3mo

I loved the characters. They seemed relatable and messy. Loved the nods to The Hate U Give. Important themes. Did find the writing style not as good as the first book.

24 Apr-4 May 2022 (audiobook)
The story of Bri, an aspiring hip hop artist, growing up in the Garden battling with the legacy of her father, poverty, eviction and gangs.
An interesting book but it suffered a little from being read so soon after Concrete Rose, which I loved. This felt a little less real.

While this one was different than the other two in the series, it tackles the serious issues of race, authority and what it takes (and doesn‘t) to make your dreams come true… powerful and timely and won‘t soon leave your heart.

(2019) This was author Thomas's follow-up to the terrific "The Hate U Give"; it riffs on similar themes, but focuses on a talented teenager trying to shape her own identity and relationships while also dealing with social pressures and prejudices, and trying to break into a predatory music industry. I found it powerful.

Also, if any audiobook publishers happen to be dropping by: keep hiring Bahni Turpin please and thank you.

Oh my stars!! This books pulled me in and kept me pulled in the whole time. I loved that this book takes place in the same timeframe and place as The Hate U Give - it added something extra knowing what else had gone on in this town. Bri is a strong, knows what she wants type of girl, who is also trying to figure out who she is when the world is trying to push her into being what they make her out to be. Highly recommend!!

Great follow up to “the hate u give” which I read earlier this year. No need to remember the plot, btw. Very on point, easy to understand discussions abt poverty, education, family expectations, friendship. Solid YA contemporary fiction 🖤

I might be a little hard on this book due to THUG comparisons and taking several days‘ break in the middle but 🤷🏻‍♀️ I liked it, didn‘t love it. I never fully connected with Bri. While in theory I understood the choices she made I didn‘t really GET them. The ending didn‘t really come together for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫This was a reread for me for my Novels at Night book club, and I remember really enjoying it the first time I read it, and I think I liked it even more this time around! Angie Thomas is a must-read author for me, and I highly recommend this book! The audiobook was great, especially to hear the raps instead of just read them. There is also a Spotify playlist that Thomas made for this book which is definitely worth checking out!

So I loved this book. I have to admit that I decided to listen to an audio book for the majority of this book, and it helped me enjoy the book a lot more. I‘m not usually one for audio books, but hearing the lady use different voices for different characters made me love it that much more. Such a good story. If you loved her book the hate you give, I recommend this one as well.

Book #25:
I loved The Hate U Give, and wasn‘t ready to dive back into this one until this week - but it was worth having on my audio tbr pile until then! I loved the characters, the complex relationships, the way Bri‘s art, words, pain & dreams mixed with her culture, racial oppression, & her coming-of-age. Her rap / poetry is visceral & Thomas‘s writing just wraps you up in the story‘s flow.

Here is my February List. I decided that it would be great to try this every month, and if I don't read something, it stays on my list until I read it.
I made one exception to that from Jan. I did not get my bookspin or #doublebookspin book read, and took them off, but still plan to read them.
I can't wait for February, as a few of these books I am super excited to read.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Looks great!! Also, whenever you read your January books just let me know (& let me know they were from January!!) & I'll still give you credit for the giveaway!! 2y

Angie Thomas knows how to create a a character and story that captivates you. While her novels are YA, each of them has been filled with people I root for. Bri is a feisty teenager dealing with a variety of issues and she finds her way through it all. The narration on the audiobook was great too.

For me this book is an easy 10/10. I loved every second of this book. It is very well written and very descriptive. If you love books that can be very easily turned into something that could be real life, this book is for you. Angie Thomas did an amazing job at making the readers connect with the characters. I highly recommend this book to all readers.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Kenzie! Totally agree- she‘s an amazing author! I would have liked a bit more of a summary and you were missing the motif and explanation, but otherwise good work! 3/6 2y

In the second half of this book, Bri deals with the consequences of fame and repairing her relationship with her mother. I have finished the book, I can say the second half is better than the first. The way Thomas wrote Bri struggling to find herself and figure out what she really wants to do was really connecting and relatable. The theme was diving deep to find yourself, written in the first person. If you liked Dear Martin, you'll like this.

MissYaremcio Well done Kalkidan! I would have loved a bit more of an explanation as to how we know the POV, but overall great work! 5/6 2y

On the Come Up is centered around Bri (an up-and-coming rapper) in Garden Heights. Her song is a hit, but reaches conflict because it was released. Although I didn't finish it, On the Come Up was a great book. I got about halfway, but I could tell the theme was about defeating the odds and fighting for what's yours. It's present in the story as she becomes successful, even without the means. If you liked The Hate U Give, you'll like this one.

MissYaremcio Well done Kalkidan! Keep up the great work! I am glad that you enjoyed this book and it makes me happy to hear that it is a continuation of great writing! Added to my 'to-read' list! 6/6 2y
