On the Come Up
On the Come Up | Angie Thomas
This is the highly anticipated second novel by Angie Thomas, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning The Hate U Give.Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least get some streams on her mixtape. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died right before he hit big, Bri's got massive shoes to fill. But when her mom unexpectedly loses her job, food banks and shut-off notices become as much a part of her life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it--she has to make it.On the Come Up is Angie Thomas's homage to hip hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are, and not who everyone expects you to be; and of the desperate realities of poor and working class black families.Brilliant, insightful, full of heart, this novel is another modern classic from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation.

Angie Thomas has done it again!!
I wasn‘t into reading YA fiction until “The Hate U Give” & this one plopped into my lap.
I will read any story Thomas puts on a page.

Thomas nailed it in “On The Come Up” stylistically. A masterful job in hooking me from page one, spot on character development, and superb use of dialogue throughout.

“On the Come Up” delivers relevant themes & an impassioned message for all ages & walks of life.

Butterfinger I checked this book out this week. I can't wait to read it. 14h

Bri was born to be a rapper. Like her father before her she hones her talent, which is considerable, but life is complicated. As promises of fame and fortune are made Bri struggles to answer the question, “Who are you?”

This is another stellar book from the writer of The Hate U Give, and another brilliant audio performance from Bahni Turpin.

Excellent second novel by Angie Thomas. I was so happy to see her writing, story construction, and character development are getting better and better. On the Come sup will keep you glued until the end. This novel has a lot more twists and turns than The Hate U Give. I highly recommend the audiobook which is read to perfection. I‘m not a lover of reading YA but I was thoroughly entertained reading On the Come Up.

This was gooooood! I'm not really a big fan of hip-hop, so the raps and everything weren't really that interesting for me, though I loved how Bri used it to express herself. She had some good lines, definitely! I love Angies Thomas's writing: it's full of humor. I'll definitely read anything she writes, juat because her books are so real and eye-opening, yet she does it ao gracefully and amazing, really.

These characters come alive and you get a sense you are part of their group. Bri‘s struggle feels relatable quickly for so many different reasons and that brings you into the story, too. The social, gang, and family dynamics all give the story weight and you want to see things resolved. How do we follow our passions AND our responsibilities? Humor mixed in makes this something worth sharing. That ending... that ending hits nearly the perfect note.

I read this book in one day, and I honestly wasn't even sure I was going to like it before I started it. Besides being a super easy read, it approached some important topics without ever getting too deep or serious. I absolutely loved the main character of Bri. The story is told from her point of view. Even though I have never personally experienced most of what she goes through, I found her to be extremely relatable.

This book needed a soundtrack! They say that as a writer the best thing you can do is have your character keep making bad decisions, and I will say that protagonist Brianna makes a lot of hasty, bad decisions out of anger. However, she‘s got the right to be angry, and she‘s got reasons to be angry - including the repercussions from the protest-turned-riot in The Hate U Give. Somewhere between 4 & 4.5 ⭐️.

This novel has more of a YA feel to it than The Hate U Give. While both novels are classified as YA, I feel that On the Come Up is geared more towards teens. Sorry for going dark for a while, folks!

Didn't think it would be possible, but I love this book even more than her debut. It's set a year after the events of The Hate U Give, same fictional neighborhood, different cast of characters. Not only are the story and voice terrific, but through the protag (aspiring rapper Bri), Thomas believably recreates the thought process that goes into writing lyrics, and every time she did, I was like, wow.

In this second Angie Thomas YA, Bri wants to be a rapper but after her song goes viral for the wrong reasons she has to decide how far to take it. I liked the way she showed how white teenagers are allowed to be performative while POC are always taken at face value. Maybe not as transcendent as THUG but I still really enjoyed it.
