The Queen of Bloody Everything
The Queen of Bloody Everything | Joanna Nadin
And in that instant I fall in love. Not just with him, though he is the better part of it, but with them both, with the whole scene: the house, the garden, the magazine perfection of it. And I want very badly to be in this picture. As Edie Jones lies in a bed on the fourteenth floor of a Cambridge hospital, her adult daughter Dido tells their story, starting with the day that changed everything. That was the day when Dido aged exactly six years and twenty-seven days old met the handsome Tom Trevelyan, his precocious sister, Harry, and their parents, Angela and David. The day Dido fell in love with a family completely different from her own. Because the Trevelyans were exactly the kind of family six year-old Dido dreamed of. Normal. And Dido's mother, Edie, doesnt do normal. In fact, as Dido has learnt the hard way, normal is the one thing Edie can never be . . .

This has been on my kindle for forever and I feel foolish about that. A funny yet darkly sad story about mothers and daughters. Dido narrates her life as a bookish child looking for what she needed from life in the pages of her books and her deeply unusual upbringing with her mum. I loved this although found time picking up at the end a bit challenging to follow #pantone2023 claiming for iced mango but does have some blueing in there too!

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Colourful characters, a great neighbourhood setting with lots of detail about 1970s thru 2000s London and delves into some interesting emotional turmoil between mothers and daughters.
A Bohemian solo mum and young daughter (Dido) move in beside a “perfect” conventional family. Dido wishes she lived next door - and we follow her through her coming of age as she struggles between those two worlds. ⬇️

Centique Great idea and the author is talented but a couple of things bugged me in the structure and felt contrived. Started as a possible 4 stars but ended as a solid 3 stars. Still very good and I will try more by Nadin. 4y
Reggie Does it turn out that the neighbors are less than perfect? 4y
BarbaraBB @Reggie How do you guess that 😉? 4y

BarbaraBB @Centique I think I liked it more than you did, it made me laugh out loud a few times (that mother 😱) and I grew up in the same time. That definitely added to the experience I think! 4y
Reggie @BarbaraBB Lol, yeah, looking at it now it‘s a dumb question but I wanted to know what made them less than perfect cause I‘m not gonna read it. 4y
BarbaraBB @Reggie they are almost perfect except the father has an affair with the bohemian neighbor next door and the kids are on the loose without their parents noticing it. Am I right @Centique? 4y
Reggie @BarbaraBb Thanks! 4y
BarbaraBB @Reggie No need to read the book now 😉😘 4y
Centique @BarbaraBB yes! @Reggie And their kids struggle against their more conventional expectations. But no family is perfect ever! I bet you were hoping they were secretly cannibals. 😂😂 Thats a whole other story 😂😂 (edited) 4y

Only one on my shelf, but had to include the tagged book too, as I loved it so much, but loaned it out, and can‘t remember to who? 🤷‍♀️💕📚

Well this was fun and so British! Dido has a wild irresponsible mother and prefers spending time at the neighbors, an - on the surface - normal family. She grows up in the 80s with the neighbor‘s kids and it‘s so nostalgic: the music, the atmosphere. A delightful read and a great storyline.
Such a perfect gift, @squirrelbrain 💕 thanks again!

BarbaraBB @TrishB It feels very British to me (without knowing exactly what that is) but it catches the timeframe of the 80s perfectly. Loved it 💚 4y

Liked this for the title alone. But wasn‘t prepared to adore it so much! It‘s nostalgic, funny, heartbreaking, sweary and just so British! Set in suburban Essex in the 70s &80s, its the story of bohemian Edie, her daughter Dido and their troubled relationship. Dido falls in love with the ‘normal‘ family next door and becomes part of their lives yet is somehow always an outsider. We follow her grow up, feel every heartache and every humiliation.💔

Cuilin You said sweary and British so I had to stack it! 😂 4y

Very glad I agree with the 100% of readers who also loved this book. So much of it reminded me of my own childhood growing up in the Essex suburbs. It really is a book for anyone with unconventional or complicated family dynamics. Enjoy!

Dido‘s Mum, Edie, doesn‘t do normal and leads a bit of a #heretic lifestyle. And all Dido wants is normal, just plain old boring normal.

After a few heavy reads of late, this is a good palate cleanser so far, and an interesting look into Mum-daughter relationships. And I think this was one I stacked from you @Cinfhen

KarenUK I love this title! Just ordered it from book depository 😊👍 5y
Cinfhen Nope, not me but it sounds great 😜 5y

I‘ve had a lovely, lazy Sunday morning (so far!) finishing this audiobook. It‘s right out of my childhood - so many details of growing up in the 70s, 80s and 90s. The dynamics between the main protagonist, Dido and her mother, Edie, is touching and raw. Edie is a woman who you wouldn‘t immediately imagine as being anyone‘s mother - being a mother ISN‘T always quite what you‘d expect it to be. Such a lovely book, and the narrator was excellent.

Read this recently and loved it. There‘s something to be said about reading a book that you haven‘t heard of and just picked up because you liked the title- the book then doesn‘t suffer from unrealistic expectations!! This was funny, sad and very nostalgic.

Cinfhen I‘m sold by the title, blurb and your recommendation 🖤 6y

It has taken me ages and ages and ages to finish this, not because it‘s not a great read but because life kept making me go to work and do chores 😔 But this was such a great book - characters you love, get cross with and root for, relatable relationships and funny moments too. The title and gorgeous cover had me hooked from the moment I saw it and now I‘m finished, I don‘t really know what to do!!

TrishB I loved this 💕 6y

This was a fantastic read from NetGalley and Mantle books. I loved every minute of it and felt like I was watching from the wings as the story took me from the 1970s up to the 00s in Saffron Walden, Essex. Just wonderful. 😍
