Hidden deep beneath Manhattan lies a warren of tunnels, sewers, and galleries, mostly forgotten by those who walk the streets above. There lies the ultimate secret of the Museum Beast. When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face awakening of a slumbering nightmare.

I really enjoyed this book. This is the follow up to Relic and its creepier in numerous ways. The main one being that a lot of it takes place in the abandoned subway tunnels under New York which gives the book a claustrophobic feel. Also creepy monsters, bodies showing up headless and the mole people (people who choose to live underground) 🐊

Not a great follow up to the first novel but still a good read. I look forward to the next on the series

Another great book from the Pendergast series! If you like Jurassic Park type books, you‘ll love this one. Just make sure you pick up Relic first. You would be lost without knowing what happened in the first one.

Book 3 for 2019! The sequel to Relic!

I felt sick earlier today, so while reading I also took a lot of naps. I think I‘ll be up for awhile, so I might as well get started on this one!

This was a decent follow up to Relic. Good, but not great. I think 100 pages could have been culled without losing much in the way of story and the book suffered for the lulls in action. However, I like the writing style of the Preston/Child team and I love Pendergast. The cast of characters here was very interesting and I will be continuing with the series. #50 done for #MountTBR and this finishes the 2018 Modern Mrs Darcy challenge for me, too.

alisiakae Wow!! Congrats!! That is an amazing number of books read off your TBR! 5y
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft Thanks! I made my goal, so I‘m happy. But it‘s less than a third of my total read for the year and I had hoped to have a better balance between books bought before 2018 and books picked up this year. Plus, my actual TBR stacks exploded with books purchased this year, so it‘s a bit misleading. 😂😂 I‘m not doing any challenges next year beyond Goodreads and MountTBR, so I hope to do better reading books I already own. 🤞🏻 5y
alisiakae I‘m doing a few challenges, but I think I can fill a majority of the prompts with books I currently own. 🤞🤞 5y

Meh. Not nearly as good as the first. And the minority characters are flat tokens, often demonized, and I wish I could have just read about the badass female cop without hearing about her great tits every time she appeared. Time to move on to other things.

I‘m looking forward to seeing some old characters I enjoyed in Relic. Subterranean NYC FTW.

I really like how this author uses different points of view from different characters throughout to build suspense. The museum storyline that these first two books focused on was awesome! Can't wait to read more Pendergast.

Does anybody else speed their audiobook up when they get to a really good part? It's like I get impatient waiting for the narrator.

shanaqui I often speed it up anyway! I read so much faster, so listening to audio I get all impatient. 6y
cozynarwhal Hahaha! I'll start at normal speed but have to keep increasing it as I get more and more into it. 6y

I didn't fall in love with this one, but Pendergast is a wonderful character, full of charisma and strangness. You have to love him!

Currently reading this one... I love Pendergast and I've read a lot of books of this series, but not the first two. Now is time to fix this!

I read fairly slowly, so I probably won't get through more than 1 1/2-2 books this weekend, even if I do nothing but read, but I have narrowed down my choices for #slaythatseriesreadathon to these four in-progress series, which should check off a slot or two on Mount TBR, even if they don't meet any other challenges.

I'm in a bit of a book slump, Littens! 😭 Absolutely nothing I try to read is catching my fancy, and it's not for lack of trying! I'm not going to beat myself up about it, but I do hate being in a reading slump when I have library books checked out! Luckily @SerialReader is helping me read at least *something* once a day! Here's hoping I find the slump buster book soon! 🍾📚

dariazeoli I hear you! 7y
Notafraidofwords It's terrible ! 7y
Garabrandtreviews Have you tried a bookshot? The Witness by James Patterson was good. I am also having a ton of fun with The Book jumper. 7y

pppooraikul I recently found my new way out of my reading slump; I brought out my TBR pile and read the first page of each book. If one didn't catch my interest in the few first pages, I would move to another, then another, until THE one book got my attention. Then *whoop* I'm out of my reading slump! 😉 Hope this help you one way or another. 7y
Pinkmeghan @Garabrandtreviews I've even tried to re-read a couple of favorites and nothing is hitting! 😭 7y
Pinkmeghan @pppooraikul that's an awesome idea! Maybe I'll try doing that all at once rather in drips and drabs! 7y
Reviewsbylola I hate reading slumps. Usually the best thing for me is to just not think about it and focus on other things. I get frustrated when I force myself to read. Eventually it goes away. 7y
pppooraikul @Pinkmeghan You're welcome! Good luck. 🍀 7y
Foragingfantasy I've been struggling with this myself. Usually I pick up an old favorite or the next in a series that I know I'll enjoy. Something not very serious. Slumps are the worst, I hope you find your next read soon. 7y
Lmstraubie Hang in there! The right book is out there! 7y
Mc_cart_ny Time to binge watch a show on Netflix! 7y
MyNamesParadise Graphic novels have helped me get out of the slump. The series I read there are the Ms Marvel with Kamala Khan character, Paper Girls, and The Walking Dead. Recently I got Audiobooks from the library to listen to in the car. My theme for those at the moment are celebrity memoirs read by the author. If you have lots of holds try & focus on the ones you can't go without!! (I know that last one is hard!) hope these suggestions help!! ❤️❤️ 7y

So as of 1/1, my library moved over to a self-serve holds system. I kind of have mixed feelings, since I've always prided myself on my excellent taste. At my last library, one of the aides mentioned that she took out every book after I returned them because I read "the best books" ? But I do love being able to buzz in and out so quickly!

MrBook Nice! 7y
mom2bugnbee I love my library's self-hold system. 7y
ReadingSusan What does that mean? You can pick up your own holds? 7y
See All 22 Comments
LauraBrook My library does the same thing, but for checkout it's 50/50 self check or at the desk. Could you take yours to the desk and potentially get that (awesome) satisfaction still? 7y
Dogearedcopy They just moved our self-service holds to front desk holds. Too many people were stealing other people's holds! 7y
mrsmarch @ReadingSusan @Pinkmeghan My main branch does the same thing. They put the books on an open stack with alpha order flags and you can grab, self check out, and run. I suppose it makes things a little easier for the circulation desk staff.... 7y
mrsmarch @Pinkmeghan Also, clearly, you need to make friends with that staff member on GR or Litsy so they can keep abreast of your picks! 7y
Pinkmeghan Thanks @MrBook I do adore my library! 7y
Pinkmeghan @mom2bugnbee I think I'll like it overall ! 7y
LauraBeth My library has done the self-holds for the past ten years and as a result - I have very little (if any) interaction with the librarians ☹️ 7y
Pinkmeghan @ReadingSusan @mrsmarch is correct, and her library is how I knew what to do to begin with lol! @Dogearedcopy there was a staffer there, I don't know if there's a failsafe in the system to not let you take out a book that's not yours, I guess I'll find out! 7y
Pinkmeghan @LauraBrook I think I can, I suppose it will all depend on my mood lol! 7y
Pinkmeghan @mrsmarch it was at the Stoughton library so too late! 😭 7y
Pinkmeghan @LauraBeth that's part of why I have mixed feelings! Overall I love librarians! 7y
minkyb We don't have this and my town is small enough that I can't see it ever happening. In NYC my daughter does self checkout which may be necessary but too impersonal for me. 7y
Pinkmeghan @minkyb I was actually surprised my new city didn't have it when I moved here! Waltham is pretty large in size and population. I do miss my smaller town library that we moved from in a lot of ways, and the personal relationships are one of them! 7y
BookInMyHands Tomorrow I'm moving my library to self-service holds 😬. I need staff to do other work and this will encourage more self-checkout too. We do love our patrons though- it's a hard balance. 7y
minkyb @Pinkmeghan Waltham MA? 7y
Pinkmeghan @BookInMyHands it's definitely a hard decision, but I think it will help free up resources! 7y
Pinkmeghan @minkyb yep! 👍 7y
minkyb @Pinkmeghan I live in Harvard lol 7y
