Julian Is a Mermaid | Jessica Love
67 posts | 52 read | 30 to read
In an exuberant picture book, a glimpse of costumed mermaids leaves one boy flooded with wonder and ready to dazzle the world. While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julian notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julian gets home, daydreaming of the magic he's seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes -- and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julian sees himself? Mesmerizing and full of heart, Jessica Love's author-illustrator debut is a jubilant picture of self-love and a radiant celebration of individuality.

#UCFLAE3414f2019 Julian is a Mermaid is a gorgeous multi award winning book. One of the awards it has received out of the many is the Stonewall Award. This book is the story of a young boy named Julian who goes to the swimming pool every weekend with his Abuela. While they are leaving the pool one day, Julian witnesses four mermaids leaving.

Shannyblake UDL Guidelines Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation (9.1) and for the ESOL strategy I would use Maintain a library of supplementary books and workbooks written in

Shannyblake A fun activity for this book would have the students do readers theatre to the story.

Already have some 4 year olds thinking a lot about gender at school, so I went and talked face to face with the librarian who recommended books to me last year. Thought I should read this new one over breakfast and I am destroyed. I can‘t wait to read this in class!

Julian is a Mermaid is a RF picture book illustrated and written by Jessica Love. This book has won the Stonewall Book Award. Julian is Mermaid is about a boy and his abuela. Julian wants nothing more than to be a mermaid like the people he saw and his abuela encourages him to dress up as one. This book is incredibly powerful and I would use it as a S in my classroom.

carlenerubin https://www.readacrossamerica.org/julian-is-a-mermaid/

UDL: 7.2
ESOL: 26

Julian is a mermaid focuses on a latinx family. It represents children that are not traditionally found in mainstreamed children's literature. It makes for an excellent addition to anyones classroom library.

A Stonewall Book Award winner, this MF is a wonderful tale of a little boy who wants to become a mermaid. With the help of his grandmother, he is able to become a mermaid and join the other mermaids in a huge parade. This book is a metaphor for being transgender. This book is best done as a RA to help answer the questions that most students will have and to help them receive the central message better.

Kcompton2912 This resource has activities that help students practice words that may be unfamiliar to them, since there is a large amount of Spanish used. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/julian-mermaid The UDL principle 2.4, promote understanding across languages, and the ELL strategy 5, teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts, can be met using this book with the strategy and resource. #UCFLAE3414SU19 4mo
Estradan I‘ve been wanting to read this book since Dr. Spalding first showed us this book! Using this as a RA and having students have an open discussion is such a great idea because students will be able to ask their questions in a safe environment. 4mo
DrSpalding Reading is Fundamental is an excellent resource for such a wonderful award-winning book. Read aloud is perfect and the resource can assist you with appropriate questions/vocabulary. 4mo

Julian is a little boy whose abuela takes him swimming. He loves mermaids and wants to be one. In a beautifully illustrated book it is unclear at first what his abuela thinks of his wish. Her embrace of him and the gorgeous parade of mermaids and other sea creatures at the end was very touching. #bbrc #picturebooksatoz #J @LibrarianRyan @LibrarianJen happy to see this at my local book store #taylorbooms

Requested this from the library because of Littens, and completely worth it. I don‘t have kids but I almost wish I did, just to share things like this. If you do have kids, please read this to them for me! 😁💖

Oddly, it‘s connected thematically (in my mind at least) to Adam Savage‘s Every Tool‘s a Hammer, which I‘m also reading now. Acceptance, costumes, following what you love — it‘s all in there.

Also gorgeous. I might need my own copy.

Really excited for this read we got at our local indie bookstore. It‘s not too early to let our boys know they can be themselves, no matter who that is. Also, our bookstore is donating 10% of sales to RAICES this weekend. It was another excellent reason to shop there!

🧜🏽‍♂️ Julian is a Mermaid tells the story of a young boy who absolutely loves mermaids. In the beginning of the story, Julian and his Abuela were riding the subway home when he noticed three women in dressed in mermaid costumes. He marveled at how they looked and when he got home, he decided that he was going to make a costume of his own instead of just dreaming about becoming a mermaid. #LAE3414sp19

ha_kaye This RF book celebrates individuality, the LGBTQ+ community, self-love, acceptance, and self-identity while channeling societal norms such as gender roles and family dynamics. It would a great RA for the month of October, which is LGBT history month. Another reason to read it in October is because Jessica Love received the 2019 Stonewall Book Award, which recognizes exceptional merit relating to the LGBT experience, for Julian is a Mermaid. 8mo
