"NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . ." A thrilling new adventure set between "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back, "and for the first time ever written entirely from Luke Skywalker s first-person point of view. Luke Skywalker s game-changing destruction of the Death Star has made him not only a hero of the Rebel Alliance but a valuable asset in the ongoing battle against the Empire. Though he s a long way from mastering the power of the Force, there s no denying his phenomenal skills as a pilot and in the eyes of Rebel leaders Princess Leia Organa and Admiral Ackbar, there s no one better qualified to carry out a daring rescue mission crucial to the Alliance cause. A brilliant alien cryptographer renowned for her ability to breach even the most advanced communications systems is being detained by Imperial agents determined to exploit her exceptional talents for the Empire s purposes. But the prospective spy s sympathies lie with the Rebels, and she s willing to join their effort in exchange for being reunited with her family. It s an opportunity to gain a critical edge against the Empire that s too precious to pass up. It s also a job that demands the element of surprise. So Luke and the ever-resourceful droid R2-D2 swap their trusty X-wing fighter for a sleek space yacht piloted by brash recruit Nakari Kelen, daughter of a biotech mogul, who s got a score of her own to settle with the Empire. Challenged by ruthless Imperial bodyguards, death-dealing enemy battleships, merciless bounty hunters, and monstrous brain-eating parasites, Luke plunges head-on into a high-stakes espionage operation that will push his abilities as a Rebel fighter and would-be Jedi to the limit. If ever he needed the wisdom of Obi-Wan Kenobi to shepherd him through danger, it s now. But Luke will have to rely on himself, his friends, and his own burgeoning relationship with the Force to survive. Praise for "Heir to the Jedi" "" Utterly compelling . . . [The novel] plants readers in Luke Skywalker s boots in the early days of his heroism, during the weeks after he blew up the Death Star. New York "Daily News" An excellent book with rich characters, bubbling humor and poignant emotion. " Roqoo Depot" "" Entertaining . . . action-packed . . . suspenseful. " New York Journal of Books" "" Great . . . [an] entertaining introduction into understanding Luke s character . . . There are moments in "The Empire Strikes Back" that I now point to and say, I understand how he got there, and it s because of this novel. The Wookiee Gunner Pure "Star Wars ." . . From shoot-outs to narrow escapes, I could practically hear John Williams s score playing in my head a credit to Kevin Hearne, to be sure. Coffee with Kenobi A must-read for fans . . . I left with a much closer understanding of who Luke Skywalker is, and an even deeper admiration for the character. All things are connected in the Force, and I feel more connected to Luke after reading "Heir to the Jedi." "Comicbook.com""

I really enjoyed this story from Luke‘s perspective! It made me want to rewatch the original trilogy, it‘s been far too long. Seeing Luke interact with a potential love interest that wasn‘t his sister was a nice change of pace. 😅 It has quite a few funny moments, but gets quite serious towards the end. The talks about his dad being betrayed by Vader (this is before he KNOWS) were particularly sobering. That last line…oof! 💔😭

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Thanks @BookwormAHN for my first foray into the Star Wars bookverse! ❤️ 2y

The husband and I are staying at an AirBnB this weekend with some friends. This introvert is EXTREMELY grateful for her few hours of quiet morning reading time before the rest of the group wakes up to start the day‘s adventures. 😅

AmyG That‘s the beat time to read, imho. Enjoy your trip. 2y
ElizaMarie I love this!! Also you look so cozy! 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @AmyG Thank you! It was a lot of fun, but very grateful to be home! 😅 2y

🎧 1st person, Luke‘s POV, wedged between New Hope & Empire Strikes Back. It‘s the 1st 1st person Star Wars book that I‘ve listened to & I really enjoyed it @Jari-chan 🖤

Author of Iron Druid & the narrator did good jobs!

Luke is traveling with R2D2 after the destruction of Deathstar I. He‘s a hero. He has a crush. He‘s still young & looking to become a Jedi Master like his father. 🥺

Luuuke I am your father 😝

New old canon. Fun!

⭐️⭐️⭐️7/8

BillBlume I enjoyed this book, too. Felt like it really captured Luke well. 3y
Jari-chan Glad you liked it, too! 😁 3y
Twainy @BillBlume @Jari-chan YES! I loved this!! This author nailed it! This is exactly how I feel Luke would have felt & been doing after he blew up DS1!! And the dialog was believable & engaging. 🤗🤗 3y

I was surprised to learn that Kevin Hearne has written a Star Wars novel, and of course I wanted to find out how he dealt with this task.

He did well. Very well. Really! This book shows us the deepest thoughts and feelings of Luke Skywalker. Here he's not a knight in a shining airship, but a confused young man, who has to deal with way to much.

And once again: Star Wars writes the best love stories ❤

I think I enjoyed this one even more on reread than I did originally. After all the new films, I loved reading this story through Luke‘s eyes even more. I enjoyed seeing Luke deal with finding his way after that first rush of success after Yavin & his attempts to try to learn about the Force without any teacher to guide him, making mistakes, ecstatic about some small successes, and leery about his first brush with the dark side. #StarWarsBuddyRead

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Your reviews always intrigue me, I‘ll be stacking this one for the future too. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm This one is set after A New Hope and before The Empire Strikes Back, I found it interesting to read a very young and still unsure Luke. 3y

First off the cover is fantastic 🧡 This takes place after A New Hope. Luke is on mission with Nakari, a rebellion sympathizer, to get Drusil, a creature who looks like the embodiment of The Scream painting, to a safe place. Along the way he works on his contact with the Force.

I‘ve read lots of bad reviews about this book but I found it good.
An emotional story post “Battle of Yavin” about Luke Skywalker and his relationship with the Force.
There‘s almost everything in this story, adventure, love, friendship, emotions and a little of horror.
I also appreciated the author's choice to narrate in the first person, as if to make each of the readers a new "Luke."

I‘m having fun reading this! It‘s first person from Luke‘s POV between New Hope and Empire. It‘s a little episodic but Hearne is handling Luke in a clever thoughtful way.

And the best part has to be Nakari Kelen! She‘s a cool, competent woman of color and a perfect foil for Luke. They‘re even flirting a little! I wonder how Hearne will deal with the fact that she doesn‘t show up later... oh. Oh no. Really? REALLY, KEVIN HEARNE?! Boooooo! BOOOOOO!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk The triumphant scene where Luke moves something with the Force for the first time (a wet noodle across a table) was all that saved this from a Pan. Because ugh, that ending. 4y

I enjoyed this one, but forgot to take a photo before it went back to the library. Interesting having Luke‘s point of view of things, not something I‘ve seen much of in the current canon. Not my fave Star Wars book but not bad either. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

“When The #Empire Strikes Back first came out in 1980 and I saw Luke summon his lightsaber to his hand in the wampa cave, I remember thinking, ‘Whoa! Awesome!‘ And then, after I‘d seen it maybe ten more times, I wondered, ‘Where‘d he learn how to do that?‘ My nine-year-old self never suspected that one day I‘d get the chance to provide the answer, and I‘m grateful to Del Rey and Lucasfilm for making it happen.” - Kevin Hearne #QuotsyMay19

Hearne did an awesome job writing about Luke after he blows up the death star but the real star was Marc Thompson's audioread of the book!
He seriously sounded a lot like the younger version of #markhamill!
Gonna listen to all of #starwars books. I love #libby and my local library for making me into an audiobook believer!

With the film "Rogue One" almost here, I keep thinking back to Kevin Hearne's HEIR TO THE JEDI, set on the other side of "A New Hope." Kevin delivers one of my favorite literary portrayals of Luke Skywalker in the months after the Battle of Yavin. Haven't felt a writer captured Luke this well since Timothy Zahn. I need to try more of Kevin's books. #StarWars #KevinHearne #LukeSkywalker #Skywalker #Jedi #SciFi #RogueOne
