The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby | Charles Dickens
After his father's death, Nicholas Nickleby, his mother and sister are at the mercy of his cold and unfeeling Uncle Ralph. Keen to rid himself of his nephew, Ralph sends Nicholas to work for a wicked master in a Yorkshire boarding school. Unable to bear the cruelty he witnesses he flees Yorkshire and takes to the road for a series of adventures. On his return to London, Nicholas uncovers a plot to destroy his sister and even loses his heart in the first of Dickens' romantic stories. A great social campaigner, Dickens highlighted the plight of unwanted children in corrupt institutions and shocked his middle class readers. Pickpick

One of Dickens‘ earlier novels, NN gives me Pickwick vibes, especially with some of the over-the-top humor, and the pathos of The Old Curiosity Shop. Nicholas is a young man‘s hero - brash and hot headed and protective of his and his sister‘s honor. But also likable. And he sticks to his version of honorable behavior even when it goes against his feelings for Madeline. A typical Dickensian ending wraps it all up with a bow for an enjoyable read.

Lcsmcat This is number 3 of #24in2024 2mo
Ruthiella I loved how flawed Nicholas is, pretty rare for a Dickens‘ hero. 2mo
Lcsmcat @Ruthiella It is, although I find David Copperfield to be flawed, just in a less aggressive way if that makes sense. But children in Dickens? They‘re almost never flawed unless spoiled by a villainous parent. 👼 2mo

I love Dickens. His writing just brings me joy, despite the somewhat miserable circumstances he depicts. I love his language, his preposterous villains, and angelic heroines. And I love the way his novels meander but eventually come back to a somewhat comfortable (and usually predictable) conclusion. This was not my favourite Dickens - probably Great Expectations - but still good and I enjoyed the narrator very much.

I've been having episodes where my body has seizure-like tremors. Tonight, my speech is extremely messed up to where I cannot talk without a severe stutter, and my body is extremely tired and weak. So, to keep up my spirits, I'm going to read a Dickens novel I haven't read before!

Nerdy_Bookworm @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thank you! I plan on setting up an appointment with the neurologist this week, and hopefully they'll be able to find out what's going on! I'm hoping to be good as new soon! ❤❤❤ 4y

This was a long book and it took me a long time to get through. I enjoyed the rambling narrative. It was kind of like the Pickwick Papers in that it would go off on long tangents.

Day 18 of #GratefulReads is #BeenOnYourTBRTooLong and now is when I reveal my literary dark secret! I‘ve been reading Nicholas Nickelby for YEARS! It started okay but I got bogged down in parts and then I just stalled on it. Dickens is not my idea of fun times. 🤦🏻‍♀️

#WeekendReads
@rachelsbrittain

1. Nicholas Nickleby and a book called The Birds Our Teachers by John Stott. The second is a Christian book about how we can learn about God through birds. The author calls it an “orni-theology” 😊

2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - no, I still haven‘t read all the HP books!

3. I have some doorstoppers I want to finish by year end. In October I‘ll either read Moby Dick or Schindler‘s Ark.

So you will get a medium flat rate box on Thursday from Vegas, don't open until May 28. And @PirateJenny you will also be getting a medium flat rate box Thursday for the tea lovers postal swap.

I can't stop thinking about this image. When we toured the Charles Dickens Museum, there is additional audio content available for each room. A woman narratives stories and musings that bring the room to life. In this room, the kitchen/servants' area, she talked about the lives they must have had, toiling "all day while looking up at the ankles of those passing by on the street above". Quite poignant.

#Zeus who caused a complete collapse of the couch cushions in an effort to make himself more comfortable is not at all interested in my #TBRTuesday #bookmail, another volume of the 1910 Educational Book Co. Dickens Library illustrated by Harry Furniss. I on the other hand am quite pleased —first time ordering through Biblio and it arrived on time and in beautiful condition. I love these end papers. #kittenlitten #catsofLitsy #collections
