I Can't Make This Up
I Can't Make This Up: Life Lessons | Kevin Hart
139 posts | 82 read | 5 reading | 84 to read
Superstar comedian and Hollywood box office star Kevin Hart turns his immense talent to the written word by writing some words. Some of those words include: the, a, for, above, and even even. Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller. The question youre probably asking yourself right now is: What does Kevin Hart have that a book also has? According to the three people who have seen Kevin Hart and a book in the same room, the answer is clear: A book is compact. Kevin Hart is compact. A book has a spine that holds it together. Kevin Hart has a spine that holds him together. A book has a beginning. Kevin Harts life uniquely qualifies him to write this book by also having a beginning. It begins in North Philadelphia. He was born an accident, unwanted by his parents. His father was a drug addict who was in and out of jail. His brother was a crack dealer and petty thief. And his mother was overwhelmingly strict, beating him with belts, frying pans, and his own toys. The odds, in short, were stacked against our young hero, just like the odds that are stacked against the release of a new book in this era of social media (where Hart has a following of over 100 million, by the way). But Kevin Hart, like Ernest Hemingway, JK Rowling, and Chocolate Droppa before him, was able to defy the odds and turn it around. In his literary debut, he takes the reader on a journey through what his life was, what it is today, and how hes overcome each challenge to become the man he is today. And that man happens to be the biggest comedian in the world, with tours that sell out football stadiums and films that have collectively grossed over $3.5 billion. He achieved this not just through hard work, determination, and talent: It was through his unique way of looking at the world. Because just like a book has chapters, Hart sees life as a collection of chapters that each person gets to write for himself or herself. Not only do you get to choose how you interpret each chapter, but your interpretation writes the next chapter, he says. So why not choose the interpretation that serves your life the best?

I loved this book. I listened to the audio book. Kevin Hart reads it. 😂 😂 He has been through a lot of crazy shit in his life. Wow he's amazing and reading his own story just makes it so much more enjoyable.

I confess...I can‘t stick with one book from start to finish, I have to switch things up. So am constantly reading multiple books at the same time.
Just suffered the first 31 chapters of Kevin Hart‘s book (Each chapter is super short and that‘s only 1/4th of the book) and things are finally looking up!
And, got myself more books...There‘s too much to read and too little time, between work, play, and hustle! 🥺

baes I am the same way, unless it sucks me in from the start. Usually at the halfway point of a book is where I begin to devote my time to finishing that book. 7mo

This was the perfect type of book in that I had that conflict in which I didn't want it to end, but couldn't put it down either. More than a mere collection of funny stories, this is also a serious book about an incredibly driven man with an insane work ethic and and an almost inhuman level of positivity and perseverance.

Humble brag:
After my reading session this evening and finishing this book, I also completed my first yearly goal in Bookly just over three months early!!
I reset the next one to track my last ten books for the year and I have the next five of those ten picked out!!

Vinjii Congrats 🙌 what app is that? 8mo
Chelseabillups30 @Vinjii, it‘s called Bookly. Probably my next favorite and most used bookish app aside from Litsy! 8mo
Vinjii @Chelseabillups30 I try and use a similar app when I write and keep forgetting to start the timer 😂 thank you! 8mo
Chelseabillups30 @Vinjii, I hate when I start a reading session and don‘t remember to start the timer until AFTER I‘m done reading!! I‘ve driven myself crazy a couple times doing that.....😂😑🤣 8mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So if any of you do read this book, I‘d highly recommend the audio as a companion as you read, it‘s got some serious adult, crude and inappropriate humor, but if you can get past that it enhances the experience. I‘ve always loved Kevin‘s comedy. I have that sarcastic, slapstick driven taste in comedy and Kevin is all about that. This book was both hilarious and insightful and gave me a more complete view of who I know Kevin Hart to be.

Chelseabillups30 @BarbaraTheBibliophage, it‘s been a really fun, hilarious read!! And unexpectedly packed with lots of wise words and stories from Kevin Hart‘s career and life journey. Waaay more serious than I would‘ve thought, but he really paints a whole picture of what has made him who he is today, so much more than a comedian! I highly recommend the audiobook along with the physical book, it enhances the experience! 8mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Chelseabillups30 Thanks! I would never have picked it up, but now maybe I will. I‘m using this month to catch up on ARCs, though. (edited) 8mo
Chelseabillups30 I have always been a fan of his comedy (heads up it can get very crude and inappropriate, so if that‘s not your style....proceed with caution...) but it really is a book that paints a picture of so much more than his role as a comedian. Really makes you question why we look at celebrity figures the way that we do and idolize them as if they were not ever one of us. He really makes you see that fame & fortune doesn‘t doesn‘t define who a person is. (edited) 8mo
