The Names
The Names | Don DeLillo
11 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
Set against the backdrop of a lush and exotic Greece, The Names is considered the book which began to drive "sharply upward the size of his readership" (Los Angeles Times Book Review). Among the cast of DeLillo's bizarre yet fully realized characters in The Names are Kathryn, the narrator's estranged wife; their son, the six-year-old novelist; Owen, the scientist; and the neurotic narrator obsessed with his own neuroses. A thriller, a mystery, and still a moving examination of family, loss, and the amorphous and magical potential of language itself, The Names stands with any of DeLillo's more recent and highly acclaimed works. "The Names not only accurately reflects a portion of our contemporary world but, more importantly, creates an original world of its own."--Chicago Sun-Times"DeLillo sifts experience through simultaneous grids of science and poetry, analysis and clear sight, to make a high-wire prose that is voluptuously stark."--Village Voice Literary Supplement"DeLillo verbally examines every state of consciousness from eroticism to tourism, from the idea of America as conceived by the rest of the world to the idea of the rest of the world as conceived by America, from mysticism to fanaticism."--New York Times

#BookMemeWars
@SumisBooks
Today's meme category was me irl. I have no clue to to pronounce a lot of names and names of places especially in fantasy books when it is all made up!

wanderinglynn I do the same thing. Even when the book includes a pronunciation guide. 😂 4y
vlwelser I do this also. But sometimes it turns into a joke. There are only so many ways to mispronounce Hermione until your mom figures out you're messing with her. 4y

I was nominated to do the name challenge. I had enough books to make my full first name-Patricia. I nominate @LibrarianRyan @TheDaysGoBy @Alora @princesspeanutsmommy @Eggs @Rissa1 @kamoorephoto @Andrew65 @JenReadsAlot @RachaelFryman

kamoorephoto I love the books you chose!!!! 💓💓💓💓 I will (try to) do this tomorrow when I‘m not lying in bed with horrible TMJ pain (and resulting headache and general shitty feeling - plus I‘m hungry) 😖 5y
kamoorephoto PS. This is beautiful! 5y

Joining in on #LitsyHandle fun!

Mine's not terribly original- my name and an homage to my city (313 is Detroit's area code). Tell us about yours!

@Chelleo

Chelleo That‘s cool! 6y
Chelleo I wonder how connected young people are to their area code these days? 6y
Andrea313 @Chelleo Great question! I will have to pose that to the next group of students I work with (I'm in arts ed). I'm very interested to hear their answers! 6y

ValerieAndBooks I used to live in Washtenaw county for several years and remember when (not the exact year lol) it used to be 313 but then assigned us a new area code, 734! 6y
Andrea313 @ValerieAndBooks That's so funny! When my family lived in Royal Oak, I remember the shift to 248. So weird how those things stick out! 6y
LoLo_and_The_Dude I am a local Detroiter too, although I haven‘t lived in the City proper since before it was cool... 6y

I‘m not super creative with names.. I have an Instagram that I dont keep up with called Bookworm.tealeaves but when I joined Litsy I just with with first initial K-Kelly, last initial, and a Bible scripture reference that I have tattooed on my ankle Psalm 63:3. #LitsyHandle @Chelleo

Chelleo What‘s the scripture? I have a former coworker who went by Ke (pronounced key) and that‘s what I saw when I read your handle. 6y
Ke633 @chelloe My nieces call me Kiki which sounds like Key-key so it‘s that‘s pretty accurate!! And the scripture is: “Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.” 6y
Chelleo Beautiful scripture! 6y

Pickpick

#1000pixiedust as you can see Don DeLillo is my favorite author and makes me immensely happy. To my mind, of our contemporary authors, few so see the world with absolute clinical precision but still capture the absurdity.

andytbarnes Should note thanks for the giveaway @Lizpixie and to follow her if you are not doing so for some asinine reason. 7y

My favorite quote from my favorite DeLillo novel. From the days I doodled, scribbled, and drew in my books.
