Nanette O'Hare is an unassuming teen who has played the role of dutiful daughter, hardworking student, and star athlete for as long as she can remember. But when a beloved teacher gives her his worn copy of The Bubblegum Reaper--a mysterious, out-of-print cult classic--the rebel within Nanette awakens. As she befriends the reclusive author, falls in love with a young but troubled poet, and attempts to insert her true self into the world with wild abandon, Nanette learns the hard way that rebellion sometimes comes at a high price.A celebration of the self and the formidable power of story, Every Exquisite Thing is Matthew Quick at his finest.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching 18 year old Nanette O‘Hare try to figure out who she is with the help of the reclusive writer who penned a book that changed her life, and the young poet he introduces her to. It‘s thoughtful, philosophical &, dare I say, ultimately hopeful.

Teenager me would have devoted herself to this book about not conforming to society. Especially seeing as though the MC takes her inspiration from a cult classic novel. So many writers and poets that I once worshipped were mentioned or quoted...

As an adult I can appreciate the book and it's messages, though it doesn't affect me as it once would have. I guess that means I've reached a point in my life where I'm living as my authentic self.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great review! And isn‘t it great when we can see books differently based on where we are in our lives? And YES! That over a certain age group, whatever that age was for you, where you just seem to appreciate your life and yourself so much more and care just less about everyone else‘s opinions about it. 6y

Yeah, no. A young girl reads a book that makes her rebel against her life and krads her on an journey of self discovery and hardship.

It felt too angst-y, too condescending, too like trying too much. I got a Cather in the Rye feel from it, but not as well executed. Something just felt off for me, and I can point my finger to anything exactly. I guess I‘m just bound to have bad luck with my #LetterQ for #LitsyAtoZ

The first time I saw this book cover, the black backdrop and pink bubble gum reminded me of the Dead Like Me TV series cover. Started reading it today and in the first few pages it mentions an out of print novel called “The Bubblegum Reaper”... 😶 REALLY making me want to rewatch Dead Like Me 😅💜 But, alas, there is still no electricity 😔🇵🇷 Anyway, back to Nanette O‘Hare‘s story! 🔦 📖 ☺️

When I first started this book I wasn't sure if I was even going to be able to finish it. I just didn't really understand the characters. Once I got into the book I was able to enjoy the rest of it. Maybe not my favorite but was still a good read.

This was such an amazing YA read. I knew nothing about it when I started the book but it sucked me in from the very first chapter. I couldn't stop listening to it. An out of print novel brings Nanette O'Hare in touch with a reclusive author, a troubled poet and a bullied young boy.. all outliers in a society where conformance is valued and expected.

Suet624 I think Quick is highly underrated. 7y
ramyasbookshelf @Suet624 I agree! It was hard to believe that this book wasn't written by a 18 yr old girl! 7y

For those who've read Every Exquisite Thing - I'm sure you'll be as excited as I am after spotting our man 'unproductive Ted' sunning happily on a stone and being as unproductive as expected. For the rest, I present - A turtle.

I ended up not really liking the 2nd half of this book nor the main character by the end. I read it fast, so I must not have hated it, but definitely didn't love it.

A novel that takes on coming of age and finding yourself. It is well written and raw in its subject matter. I had varying waves of feeling attached and detached to the story and characters. I didn't love or hate this novel. It was a good read... I believe it was written to make you think rather than give you a grand story.
As a side note, I did enjoy taking the sleeve off this one. I'm curious how it'll work for paperback. 🤔

This book was amazing. If you EVER get the chance to pick it up and read it you should. Some crazy things happen that make you sad, but everything kind of works out for the best. The main character Nanette struggles with life and you get to see her work it all out. Very sentimental book, and to me no disappointments. #mustread #yabooks

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I dogeared a lot of pages with wonderful quotes and observations. On the other hand, I'm not sure I really got much of a story. I like the general idea of it and do believe it is a relatable tale (esp. for book lovers), but I wish there was more to the story so that I felt a little more connected to it and the characters.

I didn't love it, but I still thought it was a good book. Sometimes quirky, fast paced, easy read. Felt disjointed at some points. I really hated Nannette's experiment toward the end when she attempted to reintegrate with her old group of friends.

This was definitely something, something weird but also really great. I didn't really love all the characters (except for Oliver) but I liked Nanette's story and how she's still not done figuring herself out but that's ok. Also Alex reminded me a lot of JD from Heathers (the musical, not the movie) just cause he was kind of violent and that their relationship wasn't that healthy. But anyway I'm on hour 17 with a total of 946 pages #24in48

I adore Matthew Quick, but about 30% of the way through I questioned if this was indeed written by him. Yes the characters were odd, but there was way too much teenage angst for me to enjoy it. That being said, if you love YA, you might love this book. This was a meh read for me. 😕

A must read! Discovering yourself is hard, especially when everyone has expectations of who you should be. Quick's depiction of this struggle is thought provoking and realistic. All teens should be required to read this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
