This is a long book! With lots of detail. That being said, I went back and forth between being really interested and falling back a bit with some of the detail. Now, Weir really was looking at a lot of information to try to sort out who was involved. Boy, talk about “fake news” of the time! And sham trials with a political bent (i.e. predetermined outcome)... Overall, I‘m rating it good, but it does take a while to read.

TrishB It‘s another one of those historical conundrums!! I believe she‘s guilty- Weir and I don‘t agree on a lot of historical questions 😁 5y

Birdsong28 @jenniferw88 Just be careful when buying it as you can get it with the yellow cover (the pic that is on here) or the movie cover and it just says Mary Queen of Scots on the front but it is the same book. My version is the yellow cover as I have had it a few years but only getting round to reading it properly 😂 as I used it for my Tudor History A level but only used certain sections. 5y

AlaMich I really enjoy the Dr. Siri series!! It‘s such a unique setting and the characters are great. They are not really about the mysteries, however. IMHO, that is. 😊 5y

Having finished Jenny Wormald‘s analysis of Mary‘s personal rule, I jumped right into Alison Weir‘s exhaustive analysis of the murder of Lord Darnley, one of the only Weir biographies I hadn‘t yet read. And it‘s pretty safe to conclude that Weir has turned over all the stones currently available to turn over and we can conclude that a) Mary did not collude in the murder of her worthless husband,...

balletbookworm though if the pox had carried him off she would have been happy about it and b) that she made some really terrible choices, starting with marrying Darnley in the first place, that just laid her open for others to take advantage of her misfortune such that she never regained her footing. 6y

balletbookworm (Although you would think that Darnley‘s murderers could have come up with a more subtle plan than “blow up the house and if that fails smother him.” The guy was known to party a little too hard - couldn‘t he have fallen out a window of Edinburgh Castle or drowned in the Loch or Firth or something?) 🎉 I took me so long to finish this book, feels like I need a celebratory fanfare! 🎉 That said, after a slow start, this is a good book that concentrates on the most interesting part of Mary's life. After reading it, I feel I have a much better knowledge of the full cast of the Scottish Lords. Would recommend this book, ideally read after Guy's biography of Mary.

Btw, don't you think Darnley looks quite hipsterish in this painting?

zsuzsanna_reads @TheEclecticGeek It is! But a slow read too. There's a lot of information in there and not that much dramatic interpretation. We are not even told what Mary wore at her three weddings, like in other biographies! 7y

And I'm cheating a bit with this stack. I'm a bit of an Alison Weir junkie (not her novels, I can't really get into those, but her biographies). I don't think I really have a favorite, but I think I prefer her bios of Eleanor, Isabella, and Katherine Swynford because they aren't part of the Tudor time period (and don't seem quite as popular). #fridayfunphoto
