My Heart is My Own
My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots | John Alexander Guy
This book is a reinterpretation of the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. John Guy returns to the archives to explode the myths and correct the inaccuracies that surround this most fascinating monarch. He also explains a central mystery: why Mary would have consented to marry - only three months after the death of her second husband, Lord Darnley - the man who was said to be his killer, the Earl of Bothwell. He also solves, through careful re-examination of the Casket Letters, the secret behind Darnley's spectacular assassination at Kirk o'Field.

Panpan

I‘m sorry to say I have to pan this 😕. I had hopes for it, & it started out promising. But it‘s too detailed, and trips over itself before long. Unless you really like historical detail, this may be one to pass on.

Texreader Thanks for the honest heads-up. Nonfiction can be written so well, or not. And you never know till you try. 5mo
Sweettartlaura @Texreader true history/British monarchy buffs may love this. But for the casual reader of such things, this is more than you‘re looking for 😕. It‘s too bad. I saw the movie & was captivated. I wanted a more historical look at that relationship between the two queens. It‘s in here ... but it‘s really hard to extract from the rest of the details. 5mo

I‘m reading all of these books right now:
Short story collection - ebook nonfiction - audiobook - print fiction.
Only 1 of them is for #MountTBR 🙄😕
This is why it‘s so damn hard 😫

Bklover I‘m looking forward to The Institute 5mo

Very good. Very informative and interesting. Read like a novel at times which meant that even though it was a dense read it didn't bog me down. Best book to start with if you want to read about Mary Queen of Scots.

Side Note: It has been RePublished with the movie poster and renamed as Mary Queen of Scots: Two Queens One Future. I just have the older version as I used it when I studied Tudor History.

I never read anything on Mary, Queen of Scots before so this was a nice introduction. It was detailed and read like a novel.

More than Darnley? Yikes... reading more of this chapter just poor Mary can‘t have a break. Heartbreaking to read the emotional turmoil and instability her marriage to Bothwell put her through and changed her. Did not think I‘d find someone worse than Darnley.

#KindleDailyDeal alert. This #booktoscreen choice is cheap today for US users. I grabbed it up based on my love for the movie. Also, I just finished a Philippa Gregory book about Queen Mary, and the author says she became fascinated with this historical woman after reading the ⬆️ John Guy book. Double sold!

nelehelen Oooh nice deal! 13mo
MeganAnn I may have to search for a print copy of this! If I may ask, what was the Gregory book you read about Queen Mary? I‘d like to read more about her 😊 13mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MeganAnn I‘ll be posting my review later today, but it was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. 13mo

BarbaraTheBibliophage @dragondrool I almost bought it at the bookstore. But decided it‘d be easier on Kindle. Happy for the deal! 13mo

Lauram I went a few years ago and the abbey ruins were beautiful! Also noteworthy were the Scottish soldiers. I think being attractive must have been a job requirement. 13mo

I'm all about the biographies this week so here's another one: one of the most controversial monarchs in history. It's remarkably even handed- this isn't a hagiography or a hatchet job. Mary was in many ways a competent ruler but managed to fuck up pretty spectacularly. This at least gives her some credit for what she did accomplish.

A contrast to the Fraser book on MQS which I had just finished, I tackled this equally fantastic biography by John Guy. The Guy book was written more recently (2004) and where the Fraser book was a compelling well researched story, the Guy book is deep history, based on original source texts and documents. Highly recommend both, but the Guy book includes more ancillary history of the period and its influence on MQS‘ life. 5/5

Home from my travels and pretty much over the jetlag so it's time to get back into the #riotgrams I missed. Here are a couple of #bigbooks I picked up on my last round of travels - both about Mary Queen of Scots, which I bought visiting Craigmillar Castle, where the plot to kills Mary's husband was hatched.

ReadingEnvy That's my maiden name, guy. I almost never see it! 2y
shawnmooney @ReadingEnvy Who are you calling "guy"? ??. Is it pronounced the English or French way? I'm guessing the former... 2y
ReadingEnvy Yes, rhymes with my. Sometimes my dad would get mail with his name backwards, so we started referring to him as Guy Charles haha 2y

I am really taken with this painting of Antoinette de Bourbon, the grandmother of Mary Queen of Scots. Surprising to me, according to Antonia Fraser, she had short hair, or what passed as short in the second half of the 16th century.

zsuzsanna_reads Btw, I randomly started playing with the image using a photo editor on my phone and with just a few clicks made Antoinette look about 20 years younger! 3y
