Karma Khullar's Mustache
Karma Khullar's Mustache | Kristi Wientge
29 posts | 13 read | 16 to read
Debut author Kristi Wientge tackles the uncomfortablebut all too relatablesubject of female body hair and self-esteem with this sweet and charming novel in the tradition of Judy Blume. Karma Khullar is about to start middle school, and she is super nervous. Not just because it seems like her best friend has found a newer, blonder best friend. Or the fact that her home life is shaken up by the death of her dadima. Or even that her dad is the new stay-at-home parent, leading her mother to spend most of her time at work. But because shes realized that she has seventeen hairs that have formed a mustache on her upper lip. With everyone around her focused on other things, Karma is left to figure out what to make of her terrifyingly hairy surprise all on her own.

I'm so glad I finally got to read this #mgbuddyread selection. It was well worth the wait. This story has a great female role model in meaningful and relatable situations. The plot reminded me a bit of Gertie's Leap to Greatness. @Smangela @Chelsibno @Peddler410 @Mdargusch

MargoCatts I had to pop over and read the book description. This sounds irresistible. 6y

Discussion #9: what are your final thoughts? What‘s something you want to discuss that we didn‘t already?

#mgbuddyread

Thanks everyone for participating!! So much fun and makes me appreciate your hard work even more @Lmstraubie ♥️♥️♥️

Peddler410 I really liked this book. Although the topic is recycled, the cultural aspects made it refreshing. 6y
Chelsibno I really enjoyed this book! While aspects of the story seemed cliche, I felt that the main character‘s culture brought some new life to these cliche plot elements. I also loved how well the book explained and illustrated the idea of karma in a relatable way. 6y
Lmstraubie @Smangela Thank you again for taking over! I am STILL waiting on my book 😣 I will add to the discussion as soon as I have the chance to read it. 6y
merelybookish I liked the book too, although I find middle school social dynamics kind of painful to read about. (I hated Junior high, as it was called back in my day.) And I just hated that she puked at the pizza place. It felt like an unnecessary indignity for Karma to suffer. 😕 6y
Lmstraubie @syasutake @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @Peddler410 @merelybookish I did love Karma's relationship to her Dadima, albeit in the past and how she referred back to their time together through her struggles. 6y

Discussion #8: In this novel, we see the complexity of many characters with both a “bad” side and a “good” side. Who is a good example of this dichotomy?

#mgbuddyread

Peddler410 Sara. She tries to help Karma, especially in the beginning, but she also does things that hurt Karma. Then later, she blabs Lacy‘s secret making a huge mess. 6y
Chelsibno While Karma is loyal & trustworthy, early on in the book she feels some jealousy & ends up lashing out at Sara. While Ginny is a really nice & caring girl, she is shown to be really suspicious & assumes that Karma is ditching her & that Karma ruined her posters. Actually, quite a few of the characters‘ bad sides show themselves due to them assuming something about someone else or a situation. I guess what they say about assuming is true. 6y

Discussion #7: For much of the book, Karma‘s parents are adjusting to their new positions in their household. Do you think this makes them less aware of their children‘s struggles?

#mgbuddyread

Chelsibno I definitely think that it makes them less aware of Karma‘s struggles. I feel like they are more aware of Kiran‘s struggles because he was far more vocal and rebellious about them. Karma is much quieter and more abiding to the needs or comforts of others, so she doesn‘t draw attention to her struggles and she is often overlooked. They assume she‘s fine, because she‘s not rebelling like her brother. 6y
Smangela @Chelsibno that is such a good point. Reading it, it serves as a reminder that everyone needs someone to check in, even if they seem fine on the surface. 6y
Peddler410 Karma wants to keep things peaceful. Each time she felt ready to talk about her problems something else would come up and she didn‘t want to tip the scales. I think her parents were unaware not solely because of their adjustments but also because Karma took steps to not let on that things were rough. @Smangela @Chelsibno (edited) 6y
merelybookish @Peddler410 @Chelsibno Karma's desire to be peacemaker was very believable and sad for me. It struck me as a very feminine response to keep your problems to yourself and to try to smooth over problems in her family. I'm sure neither of her parents would want her to take on that responsibility. But she did and no one realized it. 6y
Lmstraubie @syasutake @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @Peddler410 @merelybookish i found it odd that her parents did not notice her lack of interaction with Sara even though it seems they were inseparable for years. I realize a lot of changes were going on, but you think that would have stood out. 6y

Discussion #6 : Karma takes a tiffin everyday for lunch, even though it‘s another source of bullying for her. How do you think this speaks to Karma‘s character?

#mgbuddyread

Mdargusch I was surprised that she didn‘t abandon the tiffin. I loved her loyalty to her family and heritage. 6y
Chelsibno @Mdargusch I agree! It spoke volumes of Karma‘s character and her loyalty. I also like how it‘s a solid memento from her beloved dadima. 6y
Peddler410 Taking the tiffin shows Karma has a strong sense of family, culture, and heritage. I love all the cultural references. 6y
See All 6 Comments
merelybookish How many times did that tiffin leak down her leg?! 😛 I was impressed she kept taking it. Because it did make her such a target. You can imagine how kids would react to the aroma of Indian food! At the same time, her lunches probably tasted better than anyone else's! 6y
syasutake I found it interesting that at the same time as she struggled with facial hair making her stand out, she was steadfast in her loyalty to the tiffin, even though it also made her different from the other kids. I expected her to abandon the tiffin and was glad that she didn‘t. As others have noted, it added to Karma‘s endearing character. 6y
Lmstraubie @syasutake @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @Peddler410 @merelybookish I think it was part of what made her such a strong female character. Yes, she was devastated by the teasing, but still maintained her strong sense of family. 6y

Discussion #5: Karma looks for solace at lunch by sitting at a different table, since Sara is with Lacy. Why do you think Ginny and David aren‘t very enthusiastic about her joining them?

#mgbuddyread

Mdargusch I think they are just leery about her “new” friendship and possibly suspicious. 6y
Chelsibno @Mdargush I agree. It is always a bit odd when someone who has rarely spoken to you suddenly wants to sit with you at lunch. With their past experiences of people either ignoring or making fun of them, some weariness is natural and maybe even necessary. After all, it sucks when you let someone into your friend circle only for them to betray you or reveal that it was all some sort of trick or joke. 6y
Smangela @Mdargusch @Chelsibno I feel like it‘s always portrayed as the “outcasts” are so welcoming to everyone and that‘s almost an unfair portrayal! I liked that Ginny was like “hey, you haven‘t said boo to us before don‘t think we‘re your bffs for today.” 6y
Peddler410 @Smangela I was also glad that Ginny made things a little difficult for Karma. I don‘t think she was really mean but she wasn‘t really friendly either. 6y

Discussion #4: Dadima taught that karma meant “your actions start a trail of reactions” as opposed to “what goes around comes around.” What did she mean? How do we see this theme in the book?

#mgbuddyread

Chelsibno What you do matters and sparks reactions, which in turn spark more reactions. I think we see this mostly with Karma and Sara. When Karma is able to keep secrets and acts in a supportive way to her friends, this causes them to trust her more and become closer. When Sara blabs Lacy‘s secret, Lacy retaliates in a way that alienates Sara. The book definitely shows how karma functions on a social level. 6y
Peddler410 I don‘t think I have anything to add. Well put, @Chelsibno 6y
Lmstraubie @syasutake @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @Peddler410 @merelybookish I also think it means you have a little control over what happens. You can choose the road you take, not necessarily what happens on that road, but at least the path. Karma does this when she keeps Lacy's secret and remakes the posters. 6y

Discussion #3 Why does Sara & Karma‘s friendship change?

#mgbuddyread

Mdargusch Unfortunately this the one trope I‘m getting tired of. Two best friends split because one wants to be friends with the cool new girl and the other gets jealous. Thankfully there was so much more to this story. 6y
Chelsibno I think part of the split occurs because of each girl‘s shifting personalities and priorities. Sara seems to be diving into the world of teens, wanting to be more stylish, flirty, & light-hearted, while Karma wants to remain more modest, down-to-Earth, & serious. 6y
Smangela @Mdargusch it was reminiscent of Gertie‘s Leap to Greatness; and I agree I‘d rather see different types of tension. @Chelsibno good point. Friends do change and it is definitely a situation that can happen but as some one who liked to have a lot of friends, it wasn‘t as heart-breaking when that ebb and flow of closeness would happen for me. 6y
See All 9 Comments
Chelsibno @Smangela That is true. I find it so weird how so many of these books that have this as a major conflict involve a main character who only really has one or two friends. 6y
Peddler410 @Mdargusch I agree with you on both points. I wish this wasn‘t the reality. As Mom of a third grade girl, I have already seen the start of this among the girls in my daughter‘s class. My girl is friends with everyone and she doesn‘t put up with the drama. She makes her point then walks away from whatever drama is going on. 6y
Peddler410 @Chelsibno You are spot on! I‘m also wondering why these stories set up the main character with only one or two friends. 6y
merelybookish @Peddler410 @Chelsibno It is a common theme but I remember experiencing it. I had a friend and we played Barbies all the time. Then one day, she got a boyfriend and everything changed. She wasn't wrong. I wasn't wrong but it took us a while to figure out our friendship again. I found the situation quite believable. It's hard when a friend changes. 6y
Lmstraubie @syasutake @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @Peddler410 @merelybookish I wonder if it is a common theme because it is relatable to the age group it is appealing to. (It reminded me of Gertie's Leap to Greatness as well.) I did like that the new friendship between Karma & Ginny remained important. 6y
syasutake @Lmstraubie @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @merelybookish @Peddler410 I do think it‘s something a lot of kids go through at this age. One thought I had is it might be interesting to see the story from the perspective of the one who‘s wanting to make new friends but struggling because an old friend feels left out. As @merelybookish pointed out, this person isn‘t always wrong. Just changing. 6y

Discussion #2 Karma‘s dad is at home now, while her mother works full-time; a complete 180°. How does this affect Karma‘s relationship with each parent?

#mgbuddyread

Mdargusch Not having her mother around to confide in just seems to prolong her agony since she can never find the right time to bring it up. 6y
Chelsibno She has to readjust how she sees each parent and how she talks to them. Her mother used to be incredibly open and available to her, but now she has to catch her after work in order to talk to her. She‘s not used to having her dad constantly around and relying on him to help her with certain things. She‘s also going through changes and has to rely on him to help her with these changes, like bra shopping. 6y
Chelsibno @Mdargusch I totally agree! That unavailability makes up so much of the story‘s tension. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Mdargusch I agree. It was a huge part of the tension - great way to describe it @Chelsibno 6y
Smangela I had so much empathy for her going through this. As an adult I understand how stressful that upheaval would be but it had to be awful for Karma. The bra shopping situation seemed almost unlikely to me. I can‘t imagine my mom not having gone with me for that 🤷🏻‍♀️ @Chelsibno @Mdargusch (edited) 6y
Peddler410 Karma has dealt with a lot of change! Right before middle school to boot! I like how dad is trying ... he changes her lunch at one point. There is much tension and I think everyone is trying to do their best. (edited) 6y
Lmstraubie @syasutake @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @Peddler410 It doesn't just effect her relationship with her parents, but the dynamics of the entire family. 6y

Discussion question 1: Why do you think Karma is so fixated on the appearance of her mustache? Is she overreacting?

#mgbuddyread

Grrlbrarian Love this photo! 😂 6y
Amie With the disclaimer that I'm only a few chapters into the book (sorry I failed at buddy reading this time around), I don't think she's overreacting. In middle school anything different from the perceived norm is a big deal to a kid. In the US the norm is for women to make their unwanted hair disappear and everyone pretends it never existed so when it's there for everyone to see, it would make anyone self-conscious, but especially a young girl. 6y
Chelsibno I really don‘t think she‘s overreacting. Like @amie mentioned, anything that is out of the norm in middle school is often made into a big deal by the kids. Not only that, even if Karma‘s hair wasn‘t overly noticeable to others, it was to her. We often notice things about ourselves and our appearances that are different, even if it‘s something that no one else would notice. In middle school, it‘s even easier to stress out about these differences. 6y
See All 9 Comments
Mdargusch What @amie said. 👆🏻I still remember those days like they were yesterday. Always trying to fit in. 6y
Smangela @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch I agree with all of you. Later in the book, when Karma‘s mother finds Karma shaving, she tells her only to get rid of it if it‘s something she wants to change - not because of other people. And while I see the point she is making, I partially disagree with her, why make it harder in middle school? Not sure if that makes sense. Middle school was the worst haha 6y
Chelsibno @Smangela So true. Middle school is the WORST. 6y
Peddler410 I‘m not adding too much, I agree with @amie @Chelsibno and @Mdargusch Middle school is so tough! @Smangela I like how Mom responds during that scene and it‘s exactly how I would handle things with my daughter. Great question! 6y
syasutake Sorry to be late to the discussion! I agree with you all. Karma‘s fixation on her mustache was utterly realistic. Middle schoolers are so self conscious! 6y
Lmstraubie @syasutake @amie @Chelsibno @Mdargusch @Smangela @Peddler410 I can't add anything new. Middle school seems to magnify even the smallest things. Karma's mother's words were great advice. It gave Karma the space to make her own choices. 6y

I finished this book for the #MGBuddyRead this weekend. Karma Khullar has a lot of changes going on with starting middle school & her parents roles being reversed. But things get worse when she realizes that she has 17 dark hairs on her upper lip. What will kids say when they notice her mustache? I loved this book and can not wait to talk about it tomorrow! Especially since I remember similar feelings and crises I had in middle school.

Mdargusch I really like this one! 6y

Anyone participating in the #mgbuddyread - it‘s moved to Feb 2nd!

I really liked this one! It once again showcases how much more complex young people‘s lives are. Self-esteem, ridicule, bullying, trying to be a good person, making friends, fitting in, not fitting in - that‘s a lot to deal with & I think adults tend to forget how hard & emotional that time in our lives can be.

It helped me learn more about a different culture - always a win!

This was one of my favorite middle grade books so far. At first I thought it was formulaic with the two friends that split up when one becomes friends with the “new girl” and the other friend gets left out. But it became much more than that because there is also family pride, body image, spirituality, friendship, and ethnic pride all discussed while Karma deals with the 17 black hairs on her lip. #booked2018 #mgbuddyread #mounttbrchallenge

I wish I would‘ve had a book like this when I was younger. In high school a group of boys use to call me M&M which stood for Monkey Man. I didn‘t know it meant that until after I graduated HS. They signed my yearbook with that nickname. I‘m still scarred by this year‘s later and hear their voices in the back of my mind. Having PCOS and being Mexican means I‘m hairy on my face and other places. I‘ve come to accept it and be comfortable in my body.
