Ronit & Jamil
Ronit & Jamil | Pamela L. Laskin
Pamela L. Laskins beautiful and lyrical novel in verse delivers a fresh and captivating retelling of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet that transports the star-crossed lovers to the modern-day Israel-Palestine conflict. Ronit, an Israeli girl, lives on one side of the fence. Jamil, a Palestinian boy, lives on the other side. Only miles apart but separated by generations of conflictmuch more than just the concrete blockade between them. Their fathers, however, work in a distrusting but mutually beneficial business arrangement, a relationship that brings Ronit and Jamil together. And lightning strikes. The kind of lightning that transcends barrier fences, war, and hatred. The teenage lovers fall desperately into the throes of forbidden love, one that would create an irreparable rift between their families if it were discovered. But a love this big can only be kept secret for so long. Ronit and Jamil must face the fateful choice to save their lives or their loves, as it may not be possible to save both.

This is a weird book to rate. There's some BEAUTIFUL lines in this but it's such a clunky compilation as a whole. I'm also kinda confused why you would go "Romeo and Juliet" in Israel-Palestine and not have it end like a Shakespean tragedy and be very surface level about the geopolitical conflict. It just seemed a little rushed. I don't know why it's so short.

I really liked the idea behind this book and the cultural aspects, but I just couldn‘t get into it in general. The verse didn‘t work for me and it was just hard to follow and the writing didn‘t do the idea justice.

WanderingBookaneer @Pelican71 : The only Ware I haven‘t read. How is it? 6y
WanderingBookaneer @britt_brooke : That was a tough one for me. Tears of heartache, anger, and frustration flowed freely from my eyes at different intervals. 6y
WanderingBookaneer @RiotMom : Loved that one. I listened to both You and Hidden Bodies and the narrator was perfect for the role. 6y

Pelican71 @WanderingBookaneer I enjoyed it. Started yesterday and finished this morning. Perfect way to end the year. It was the first book by Ware that I‘ve read. 6y
saguarosally @WanderingBookaneer I started reading it when I saw the authors at Tucson Festival of Books in March. 6y
LeeRHarry @WanderingBookaneer it's a good one! 😊 6y
Cupofjo @saguarosally are you going the the festival again this March?? 6y
saguarosally @Cupofjo It depends. I‘m working in Florida right now and if I‘m done I‘ll go to Tucson but if there‘s still work in Florida, I will stay here. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @WanderingBookaneer it‘s so good, but it breaking my heart 6y
WanderingBookaneer @Reviewsbylola : I was a bit disappointed with that one. 6y
Cupofjo @saguarosally keep me posted somehow! I moved to Tucson a couple years ago and this will be my first time going to the festival! 6y
saguarosally @Alicia and @RebL , you‘ll be at #tfob , yes? 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘m about half way through it and really enjoying it but I have seen reviews that said the second half was a let down. So we‘ll see! 6y
Alicia @saguarosally @Cupofjo @RebL I wouldn‘t miss #TFOB for the world!! I will be there with my game face on!!! 📚🌵📚🌵📚 6y
RebL Oh, yes. Definitely going to #TFOB. Have you seen the author list? @saguarosally @Alicia @Cupofjo (edited) 6y
saguarosally @Alicia @rebl @Cupofjo Yes, I‘ve seen it and when I most likely miss TFOB I will cry (and try to go to another festival)! 6y
DocBrown But it won‘t kill me if I don‘t. 6y
Cupofjo @RebL I‘ve seen the list, I‘ve never been yet! That will change this March! We should do a Litsy meetup!! 6y
RebL @Cupofjo @Alicia A meetup at TFOB would be fun ( @saguarosally can meet virtually if she can‘t make it physically). It was tough making it work last year. [ @WanderingBookaneer sorry for the thread hijack.] 6y

This book is written in prose. Though the words are limited, they are very powerful! #bookquote

This gorgeous cover caught my eye in the YA section of my library cuz LOOK AT THE PRETTY! Unfortunately the book does not deliver on the promise made by the cover, starting with the fact that the description of Ronit is nothing like how she looks on the cover. It got interesting for a few pages in the middle when they were both arguing their side of the political conflict, but then they apparently got past that way too easily.

#readathon book 2 finished. I really wanted to like this one. But it was just too confusing. The two voices got convoluted, I couldn't tell who was speaking, and there were some formatting errors that even swapped their voices at one point. Sad, because the concept is great, but the execution just didn't happen.

alisiakae Sorry this wasn't a good read. Hopefully the next book will be better! 7y

This book is based on Romeo and Juliet, but set in present day Palestine, with an Israeli girl and Palestinian boy. I was so stoked for this book, and the wonderful cover doesn't hurt either. But it just felt incomplete and a little confusing. Disappointing read.

This retelling of Romeo and Juliet, set in Israel and Palestine, was not what I was expecting. It was written in verse, which I did not care for. Because of that style, it was hard to get a full picture of the situation or characters. If a reader were not familiar with the conflict in that region, it would not be fully explained.

I feel like this had so much potential...classic retelling with a diverse twist. Some of the verse was written beautifully but the story just didn't really come through strong enough. For me this one just fell kind of flat. 2/5⭐️#twostars #meh #retelling #bookreview

#RonitAndJamil 🍀🍀 two clovers. I loved that this book was a diverse retelling of Romeo and Juliet BUT it just wasn't believable. In the original, it is obvious that R+J are madly in love and there's no way to deny this. But in the retelling (written in verse), the love seems forced and I don't buy it. I think an #OwnVoices story would have been 1000x better. As a reader, you can tell when the author knows what they're talking about.

Finally read this Romeo & Juliet retelling set in the MidEast (Israel & Palestine) and written in verse. I have mixed feelings. It works well on some levels, but so much teen angst.

I liked this book. A modern re-telling of Romeo and Juliet, in verse, staring an Israeli girl and a Palestinian boy. A great book for learning about what's going on there as well as seeing that we're really not all that different.
