The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving
The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving | Jonathan Evison
For Ben Benjamin, all has been losthis wife, his family, his home, his livelihood. Hoping to find a new direction, he has enrolled in a night class called the Fundamentals of Caregiving. There he learns the basics of the art of inserting catheters while avoiding liability, and he is instructed about professionalism and how to keep an emotional distance between client and provider. But when Ben is assigned his first clienta tyrannical nineteen-year-old boy named Trevor who is in the advanced stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophyhe soon discovers that the endless service checklists have done nothing to prepare him for the reality of caring for a fiercely stubborn, sexually frustrated teenager who has an ax to grind with the whole world. Over time, the relationship between Ben and Trev, which had begun with mutual misgivings, evolves into a close friendship, and the traditional boundaries between patient and caregiver begin to blur. The bond between them strengthens while they're on a road trip to visit Trev's ailing fathera journey diverted by a series of bizarre must-see roadside attractions that propels them into an impulsive adventure disrupted by one birth, two arrests, a freakish dust storm, and a six-hundred-mile cat-and-mouse pursuit by a mysterious brown Buick Skylark. By the end of that journey, Trev has had his first taste of love, and Ben has found a new reason to love life. Bursting with energy and filled with moments of absolute beauty, this big-hearted and inspired novel ponders life's terrible surprises as well as the heart's uncanny capacity to mend.

Ben has lost everything. His kids lives, his wife to divorce, and he never really had a career. After these losses, he signs up for the title course and begins working for Trev, a young adult with Muscular Dystrophy. Through this relationship (and a wild road trip) Ben begins to heal and Trev opens up to new possibilities. I didn‘t think I‘d like this one as much as I did. 4⭐️

I‘m happy to be feeling better today re:Covid! Thanks for the support!

Megabooks @rockpools yes, it‘s been an interesting 9 days but I‘m finally feeling better. I have to feel this way and be fever free for 24 hours (I am today) through to tomorrow and then I am considered non-contagious. 👍🏻👍🏻 4y

Hallelujah I found a large print book in my collection!!

For me, early evening is the worst for Covid. The headache is worse, I feel feverish, and if I have shortness of breath, it‘s now.

But that doesn‘t keep me from being bored AF. So here I go! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

#readersgonnaread

Reviewsbylola Are you binging any shows? Below Deck Med is my current obsession but I also need to finish the 90 Day Fiancé tell all. 4y

Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I‘m about 4 eps behind on 90 day. I‘ve never tried below deck. I‘ve been watching medical shows like toe bro and dr pimple popper 4y
Megabooks @GardenJess oh dear! I‘m so sorry!! About how long from first symptoms to minor symptoms? I hope you all healed well!! 4y
Megabooks @robinb @Chelsea.Poole @KVanRead it is always so nice to see supportive messages here!! 💜💜💜 4y
GardenJess Husband was back at work at 15 days. I was out for 6 weeks. I had a moderate case but couldn‘t shake the fever. Also seem to be a long hauler in that my symptoms are mild but continue to reappear though I test negative. My coworker had symptoms 18 days. Her elderly dad 10 days. 4y
Reviewsbylola Dr Pimple Popper freaks me out!! My in laws love it but I cannot watch. Give me blood and gore any day, as long as it‘s not pimples. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 4y
Megabooks @GardenJess thank you! This is so helpful. I‘m sorry you‘ve continued to struggle with the symptoms. I hope you improve as time passes. 💜💜 while my most alarming symptoms, shortness of breath and chest pressure, have gone away, my headache is very intense and light sensitive like a migraine. I too continue feel feverish, although I take enough Tylenol regularly for unrelated aches and pains to suppress actually registering a fever. 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I hated actually being in the room with abscesses and cysts as vet, but give me a good lipoma removal any day. Loved doing those. I just loved removing tumors anywhere. I‘m definitely weird. Toe Bro is intense though. I definitely don‘t recommend it if you are at all squeamish about feet!! 4y
Cinfhen Ugh, I‘m sorry you‘re still uncomfortable 😣 4y
Lreads I just caught up on posts and realized what has happened! I'm so sorry your sick and having to go through this. I hope you have a mild case and get well soon. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. 💕❤️💕 4y

I liked this book, but I've got to admit that I prefer the movie adaptation, which doesn't happen that often. The story was pretty intense at some points but beautiful. I do definitely recommend you to pick it up! 3.5/5 stars!

dxmy @MaGoose I'm curious, can you explain your thinking? 😊 6y
MaGoose Yes, things sometimes seem to go to hell in a handbasket. But after dealing with the "why me's" that we all get when things go south, it comes down to us on how we will respond and deal with the situation. 6y
dxmy @MaGoose very true, I completely agree! Our actions define us 6y

This was a captivating, cant put it down, pull on your heart strings read. The characters are ones that capture your attention so much that you don‘t want to let them go by the end of the book, the end of their journey together. Each having challenging circumstances, they begin as one type of person, transformed into another by the end. A fundamental read for anyone considering work in caregiving or involved in the field, clients or professionals.

Chelseabillups30

I‘ll never stop caring. But the thing about caring is, it‘s inconvenient. Sometimes you‘ve got to give when it makes no sense at all. Sometimes you‘ve got to give until it hurts. It‘s not easy, and it can be downright thankless, but if you can do it, and you don‘t mind working for squat, they‘re still offering classes at the Abundant Life Forsquare Church right behind the Howard Johnson in Bremerton. Tell them Ben sent you. 😭😭😭

Top three most obnoxious things when being spoken to by a person who does not live with a physical impairment....
1. Being spoken to as if your brain also does not work because you have said impairment.
2. The question “Can you have sex? Does everything work?”
3. Use of THE R WORD!!!!

Not sure if I should be thankful or frustrated that these three things are depicted in one short section of dialogue??

The last book of 2017 after all, and a great book to end on. I see the blurb on the front cover calls it “stealthily powerful” and that couldn‘t be more true. Ben Benjamin and the collection of misfits that accompany him on his journey from agonizing tragedy to redemption are sometimes pathetic, often hilarious, and ultimately (unexpectedly) heartwarming.

Is it the last read of 2017, the first read of 2018, or both? That remains to be seen, but it definitely fits my late 2017 theme of laugh out loud funny books that also pack an emotional punch.

The only thing upsetting about this book was that it was over so quickly! It was such a great read so easy! This book was depressing and uplifting all at once and made you reconsider how you look at life. I would recommend this over and over.
