Pickpick

John Bunyan wrote this while imprisoned during the 1600s for preaching Christianity in public. The protagonist Christian leaves the City of Destruction on his journey to the Celestial City, encountering such spiritual struggles as the Slough of Despond and the River of Death, meeting such characters as Evangelist, Discretion, Giant Despair and many more.

“When at the first I took my pen in hand Thus for to write, I did not understand That I at all should make a little book In such a mode; nay, I had undertook To make another, which, when almost done, Before I was aware, I this begun.”

@ShyBookOwl

rubyslippersreads I‘ve never read this, although it‘s mentioned in 2w
AnneCecilie I haven‘t read this either, since I keep seeing it referenced in classics I love. Looking forward to your thoughts. It‘s also mentioned in 2w
Eggs @rubyslippersreads @AnneCecilie I became inspired to read it bc my grands, ages 11 and 8, are reading and discussing it throughout the year in their home school curricula. Loved the allegorical style and the arduous journey from City of Destruction to Celestial City. Discovered that Bunyan wrote it while in prison in the 1600s for preaching Christianity. PP seems more relevant to me than the weekly gospels I heard growing up Catholic 1w

*RE-READ* Lordt. I don‘t know. I remember liking this as a kid. I may have read a condensed/abridged version. I think that is the way to read this. Christian bounces, leaving his wife & kids, to go on a pilgrimage. This was just such a slog. I just hate the massive repression of British literature. Part 2, Christiana‘s part, was unnecessary. I dunno. I just felt bogged down reading this. Another re-read off The List, I guess. 216/1,001 #1001Books

On the right is the shelf with most of my #prettyBooks. Left shows details of four, counterclockwise from top left: Pilgrim‘s Progress, Candide, Collected Sonnets of Edna St. Vincent-Milay, and Pride and Prejudice. Like @Leftcoastzen I pick them up at library sales and secondhand shops. #30JuneBooks @howjessreads

#alliterativetitles #marchintoreading

Not too many of my books had alliteration in their titles, but I found six! Of course, Pride and Prejudice, again, works for a photo challenge! ☺️

ValerieAndBooks You tricked me for a moment there and I was wondering if "Beautiful Books!" was good ? 9y
CrowCAH @ValerieAndBooks yup, did it on purpose! ☺ 9y
Branwen Nice stack! Alliteration is so great, isn't it? :-) I'm about to start a reread if The Great Gatsby! 9y
CrowCAH @Branwen I lavishly love the layered stack of lush books laying on the stairs! Lol Surprisingly, The Great Gatsby was not required reading for me, but after seeing the new movie I read the book and enjoyed it! 9y
Branwen @CrowCAH Really?! It wasn't required reading for you?! I remember having to read it in high school and not really caring for it too much. But after reading it a few years later I completely fell in love with it. I'm really looking forward to diving into it again! :-) 9y
