Maisie Dobbs gets sent undercover to Munich as the daughter of an inventor who was imprisoned there only to find out it wasn‘t him. Where was he?

Maisie Dobbs comes full circle in this thriller. Jacqueline Winspear delights me again with her ever resilient heroine who I love more and more with each outing. Here, Maisie goes undercover as a spy to rescue a British businessman and inventor from the Nazis just as the Germans take Austria. Always interesting and always a good time!

Caryl I love Maisie. I read a bunch of these last summer. 4y
lahousewyfe @Caryl Me too! I go for a while without reading any and then get back to her. Makes me feel like I'm visiting an old friend. 4y

The tagged book was my night listening, but I finished it on my walk today. Also finished Laughing Without an Accent. I liked both, but found Laughing more enjoyable than Journey, which has Maisie undercover in Hitler‘s Germany. #bfc totals today:

Walking = 4.02 miles
Audiobooks finished = 2

This was one of the most exciting of the Maisie Dobbs novels. Maisie goes undercover into Hitler‘s Germany to rescue a man who is very important to British efforts to develop the most advanced military aircraft. The world is not yet at war, but it‘s clear to those who work in Intelligence that war is coming. #audiobook

Andrew65 Not got to this one yet but looking forward to it based on this review. 👍 5y
Louise @Andrew65 In this book, one can strongly sense the danger Maisie is in during her mission in Munich. A real cat-and-mouse kind of plot. I‘m looking forward to the next one! 5y

Oh Maisie!! What have you done? She travels right into the heart of terror out of duty for her country. I‘m almost caught up in this series and it makes me sad because then I‘ll have to wait for the next one.
😢💜💜💜

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I'm listening to elegy for Eddie right now. That's how far behind I am with Maisie!! 6y
Booknerd2 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders I have been pacing myself so I don‘t get to the last book too quickly. I love this series. 6y
PatriciaU I‘ve just started an audio journey with Maisie. I‘ve found that it‘s been so long since I read the early books it‘s like discovering her all over again. I literally sobbed at the end of Birds of a Feather. 6y
Booknerd2 @PatriciaU I know exactly what you mean. These books have all the feels. 😬😄😭 6y

Love Maisie Dobbs! This was a great booking where Maisie is back in her element! It was intense at times as her travels took her to Munich pre WWII. But I definitely enjoyed this book more than the last!

P.S. I had an interview today! Please send me some good vibes! I hope to get this job! They already scheduled me for a second interview! So I‘m hopeful! ☺️

Finished the audio version of this book today. One more and I‘m caught up with Maisie. One thing I love about this series is how applicable the lessons that Maisie learns are even in today‘s world. In this book, we see the beginnings of WWII and I can see some similarities to current events. Kind of scary and yet the book ends on a hopeful note with Maisie surrounded by those she loves - a reminder to all of us.

I gave Journey to Munich by Jacqueline Winspear three (3) stars out of five (5). I listened to the audiobook version of the book and I do not believe that this hindered the book in any way. However, I do not believe this book is intended as a stand-alone book. I feel that the reader needs more exposure to Maisie Dobbs in order to get real enjoyment and understanding from this book because the book felt anticlimactic most of the time.

Banana smoothie/Sunday morning wisdom from Maisie...

What secrets did these people hold? What had they endured? She wondered how many people rushing in and out of shops, or on their way to work, had lost a love, or known deep disappointment or grief, fear or want, yet summoned the resilience to go on.

Having just finished A Dangerous Place and discovering Journey to Munich at the library, I had to continue with this next Maisie Dobbs story. It's a bit nerve racking though with her visiting Bavaria just before WW2. 😕

Time to get back to a known quantity- a Maisie Dobbs mystery on audio. This is always a good listen. This is the most recent one so I might need to savor it. It's such a great series.

Should I get this? I'm not a huge mystery reader but kind of tempted by this...

BookishMarginalia I haven't read this one, but I've read others in the series and they are very good. 7y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders This is the latest in her series. You might be better to start at the beginning with Maisie Dobbs. 😄 I love Maisie but have about 4 to catch up before starting this one. 7y
Smrloomis @BookishMarginalia are you a big mystery reader? I'm wondering if it'll work for me since I'm not really. @Penny_LiteraryHoarders ok, so maybe don't read them out of order? 🤔 7y

BookishMarginalia I'm an inconsistent mystery reader -- I enjoy them, but don't crave them. 7y
Michelle_mck I have only read the first book in the series and I loved it - January I'm planning on reading book 2 7y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Smrloomis I think with these it's "better" to read in order - things carry on in the next book that happened from the one before most times so to understand it's better to follow in order. ? just my thoughts. 7y
emtobiasz I'd recommend the series, but definitely read it in order. 👍🏽 7y
minkyb I have read them all. I am a big Maisy Dobbs fan. I would read them in order. 7y
Smrloomis @BookishMarginalia thanks. I read them rarely and usually like some settings and characters much more than others. 7y

Historical mystery group! I used to focus on mysteries taking place during the inter-war years but have started branching out a bit more lately. The top of the stack, Delivering the Truth, is about a Quaker midwife in the early 19th century. Super excited!

Set on the precipice of WWII, Maisie Dobbs tackles another foreign assignment, this time in Bavaria. The 12th in the series it seems as if M. Dobbs is finding her way back to the character that we fell in love with. Always with an undercurrent of sadness, I still hope to see Maisie happy one day.

I greatly enjoyed this latest installment of Maisie Dobbs adventures. Both Maisie & her reader are better past the shocks that occurred last book, & it was very gratifying to see Maisie not just get back to work, but to fully explore rising 3rd Reich Germany through her eyes.

Maisie Dobbs is a wonderful character, bright, adventurous, and empathetic. Her latest travels take her Germany on the brink of war where she must save others and herself.
