It's a Long Story
It's a Long Story: My Life | Willie Nelson
21 posts | 15 read | 21 to read
The definitive autobiography of Willie Nelson "Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned." . . . So say the publishers about this book I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold. It's a story of true love, wild times, best friends, and barrooms, with a musical sound track ripping right through it. My life gets lived on the road, at home, and on the road again, tried and true, and I've written it all down from my heart to yours. Signed, Willie Nelson

You owe it to yourself to read a glorious retelling of a career by the legend himself. It has all the pace of a Sunday afternoon coffee with the man, and his tales are spoken so pleasantly, even when he had every right to be angry as hell. Because as he says: rainbows are a reminder that miracles are all around us. I couldn't be more happy to have read this, and I'm glad to not put it off any longer

This is by far one of the saddest endings I've come to in the books I've read. Sadder than Mockingjay. Even Of Mice and Men. Because it's been a glorious 375 page conversation with a living legend that had great highs (phrasing), and deep sullen lows, through all of which the man has made himself a wonderful career. Reading this recollection of woes and tribulations was by far one of the greatest reads I've ever had.

I love this book for his brash recollection of events in his own voice.

Willie‘s life probably didn‘t need much spicing up!

Cinfhen Whoa! Look at Willie Nelson...was he EVER young?!??!!? 5y
emilyhaldi He seems to have done a good job spicing his own life up for sure 😜 5y
TrishB @Cinfhen along side Keith Richards - always been old! 5y

“When it‘s on us, seems like the storm will never pass. But it always does.”

I‘m not some massive #WillieNelson fan, but I enjoyed the hell out of his story. Prior to this, I was not familiar with his early career at all. I didn‘t realize he was such a prolific songwriter. His long career and tumultuous personal life are definitely worth your time. It will surprise no one that he‘s an amazing storyteller.

TrishB One of his hubbys fav reads 👍🏻 6y
Kaye Great book especially on audio. 6y

Tie-dyeing some shirts and listening to this #WillieNelson memoir. I randomly grabbed it from #Overdrive and it‘s a great listen so far! I feel like all I‘m missing is a fat joint. 😆

#audio #audiobook #multitasking

vkois88 I love dyeing stuff. I haven't done it in a while, though I have some cross stitch fabric I keep meaning to dye. I used to have a flag shirt I made for the 4th, but idk where it went 😐 6y
Eggs Nice! 6y
britt_brooke @vkois88 The flag shirts were the inspiration for this little project. Hope they turn out decent! 6y

Cortg That‘s awesome ✌🏼 6y
Kimberlone I think Willie would approve 6y
AJones Take some after pictures, I‘m curious on our they turn out. I was thinking about tie dyeing some T-shirts. If you have an pointers please share. My husband and I saw Willie Nelson in a concert a few years back and it was awesome. ✌️ 6y
britt_brooke @AJones That‘s so cool you guys saw him! This book is really good so far. I‘ll post some pics tomorrow. I‘ve only done this one other time so my hopes aren‘t too high. 😆 6y
britt_brooke @Eggs @Cortg Let‘s hope they turn out ok. 🤞🏻 6y
Crystalblu Isn‘t tie dye fun?! I‘ve been privileged enough to get to work with Willie and the family a few times, they are the sweetest people. 6y
CuriousG I have a student named Willie Nelson...I still picture the original Willie rolling a fat one every time this kid walks into the room 😅 6y
britt_brooke @Crystalblu That is so cool! 6y
britt_brooke @CuriousG OMG 😆 ... what were his parents thinking?? Maybe they smoked too many fat ones ... 6y
CuriousG @britt_brooke I've come to the conclusion that it had to be intentional. Funny thing is, Stephen King just graduated from our school too...and there is no way those parents didn't realize that one 😅 6y
britt_brooke @CuriousG I‘m dying! These awful parents. 😆😆😆 6y
Cathythoughts It looks like the joint IS all your missing. I love his voice ❤️ 6y

Mehso-so

It's a Long Story: My Life by Willie Nelson 3.5* I have less in common with Willie Nelson than I expected to. His lack of moral conviction with relation to sleeping with other women while married really became tiresome. What an unapologetic cheater. He briefly mentioned his four wives and seven children. I most enjoyed hearing about old songs and their origins. I hated that this wasn't read by Willie on Audible.

Hubby's shelves to the rescue again 😀

Trina_L I bet that is a good one. I heard that when he was younger , his wife ( or then wife ) sewed him into the sheets of his bed after coming home really late from a night of drinking ! 7y
KathyWheeler My husband gave me this for Christmas. 7y
Cinfhen It might be time for your hubby to get on Litsy 😜 7y

TrishB @Cinfhen 😂😂 7y
Izai.Amorim I liked the second title a lot, "it's a long story." Reminds me of that Harry Potter line, "it's complicated." 7y
TrishB @Izai.Amorim he's had a busy life 😂 7y
KathyWheeler @TrishB I haven't read it yet but I'm looking forward to it. 7y

I learned a lot about Willie through this book and having already read some of his other books, I thought I knew quite a bit of his bio already. Turns out, I didn't. He is a great story teller and there are PLENTY OF things to be told yet he does it in a way that is respectful of the people involved. The only complaint I have is there are A LOT OF SONG LYRICS. They didn't have to give the whole song every time. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

TrishB Have got hubby this for Christmas as he loves music biography's. 7y

See, this is what happens. I go in the library to pay my fines and I carry out an armful with the librarians laughing at me because they KNOW I walked in only to pay fines, not to get more books. This happens EVERY TIME. #IHaveABookProblem

angrylilasian Yup!! 😂 7y
