The Ripper's Shadow
The Ripper's Shadow: A Victorian Mystery | Laura Joh Rowland
The year is 1888 and Jack the Ripper begins his reign of terror. Miss Sarah Bain, a photographer in Whitechapel, is an independent woman with dark secrets. In the privacy of her studio, she supplements her meager income by taking illicit boudoir photographs of the town's local ladies of the night. But when two of her models are found gruesomely murdered within weeks of one another, Sarah begins to suspect it's more than mere coincidence. Teamed with a motley crew of friends--including a street urchin, a gay aristocrat, a Jewish butcher and his wife, and a beautiful young actress--Sarah delves into the crime of the century. But just as she starts unlocking the Ripper's secrets, she catches the attention of the local police, who believe she knows more than she's revealing, as well as from the Ripper himself, now bent on silencing her and her friends for good. Caught in the crosshairs of a ruthless killer, Sarah races through Whitechapel's darkest alleys to find the truth...until she makes a shocking discovery that challenges everything she thought she knew about the case. Intelligent, original, and utterly engrossing, Laura Joh Rowland's Victorian mystery "The Ripper's Shadow" will keep readers up through the late hours of the night. "

This was almost a pan for me, the last 50-75 pages were the saving grace. The MC was annoying and not made to be a detective, bad choices and assumptions. Although the secondary characters weren‘t annoying, I also feel like I didn‘t really know them or connect with them.

@BookwormAHN This will be on its way to you tomorrow for #whodunitthesequel.

This was my second finish for #13in3

BookwormAHN Okay, I'll watch for it 😺 5y

A very interesting concept that didn‘t quite meet expectations. I believe the narration of the audiobook helped me want to continue reading. The story seemed to bog down in the middle and the ending seemed rushed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I believe I will read the sequel.

This was a hard no for me. The contrived plot line and one-dimensional characters just left me unable to connect with it at all. There were also some passages that left me pained with how cheesy the writing was.

This was very much a so-so read. I really didn't connect with either the writing style or the main character, although there are some enjoyable side characters and an interesting twist.

While the latter part picked up for me, and I liked how this diverse cast of characters became like family to each other, this teetered on a “Pan” for me. My main issue was the first-person narrative, and its incessant need to explain every. single. thought. And move. And action. I kept putting it down because it was overload. While this is the first in series, I don‘t anticipate relishing more of this writing style. 3/5⭐️

Is it me or is it the book???! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😩😩😩 This is the second book in recent times that seems to be taking me FOREVER to get through! While yes, I am normally a slower reader, this book (like the other recent one...which shall remain nameless...) appears to be adding on 50 pages for every 25 I read...seriously, I ALMOST give up! 🤪🤪🤪😔😔
#whodunitthesequel

Bourriquet76 I‘ve had a few like that lately. I think it‘s me. I‘m so tired I can‘t focus and keep wanting to sleep, so I‘ve been reading the same two books for the last few weeks. 6y
robinb @Bourriquet76 Unfortunately I think it‘s a mix of both in my case. I‘ve had outside distractions going on, but this particular book is just not doing it for me. Just ready to be done with it, I think and move on. 6y

Not even Nashville hot chicken could make me get into this. I gave it 64 pages and I'm moving on. This reminded me of why I don't enjoy a lot of historical fiction anymore. Too much explaining historical details, too much time spent on the setting at the expense of plot and character. Plus an annoying MC who hammers out every point. The author needed to trust the reader more.

MicheleinPhilly But that chicken. 🤤🤤🤤 6y
My_novel_obsession I had never heard of Nashville hot chicken until a few days ago when I was in a restaurant in DC. I ordered it and although the chicken was a little too spicy for me, they served it with sweet potato pancakes which were amazing and my new favorite thing!! 6y

I debated about what to rate this and I will have to go with 3.5⭐️. The first half of the book was somewhat disappointing, but it did pick up towards the end & I thought about bumping it to 4⭐️. My main complaint was with the main character - she was overly whiny at times, & the author had to hit us over the head constantly by stating the obvious. Other than that, I really enjoyed this. It had its implausible moments, but I really liked 🔽 TBC

JenlovesJT47 The main character's ragtag group of friends who basically became her family. I've always been fascinated with Jack the Ripper and I thought the author did a good job in this fictional account with a satisfactory conclusion. Overall, I would still recommend this, although it did have its issues. Still, I HAD to finish it tonight, so IMO that's a sign of an entertaining book. Thanks @Jess_Read_This ! 6y
Jess_Read_This @JenlovesJT47 I feel better not being alone in my So-So rating! 6y

JenlovesJT47 @Jess_Read_This the first half of the book really irritated me or I probably would have given it a higher rating. I don't understand why the author has to spell every thought out to us or why the MC was so whiny and repetitive lol. But I still enjoyed it! 6y
Jess_Read_This @JenlovesJT47 We has very similar reasons for not liking the book. The plot was original and this could have been so much better. It checked off on paper everything I like but wow was the MC annoying. 6y
JenlovesJT47 @Jess_Read_This yep! I think there are more books in the series, I was debating whether or not to read them because I did really like her group of friends. 6y
JenlovesJT47 @Jess_Read_This I was waiting the whole book for a sex scene with her and PC Barrett and it didn't happen 😤not that I usually care about such things but there was so much buildup! Maybe in the next book 🤔 6y
Jess_Read_This @JenlovesJT47 Lol!!! I was kind of shocked she didn‘t throw that in. She moved at a weird pace with them. 6y
Jess_Read_This I will be sending your books Tuesday. I mixed up the send dates and the post office is closed tomorrow. I just wanted to let you know! 6y
Jess_Read_This @JenlovesJT47 Thanks for understanding! ❤️ 6y
JenlovesJT47 @Pamwurtzler I was a couple of days late mailing this out but it went out today, sorry for the delay!! 😱🙃😳🤗 6y
Pamwurtzler @JenlovesJT47 Not a problem! I‘ll watch for it! 6y
drokka My big problem with the book is the main character as well. Her hypocrisy bothered me a lot. I did really like Hugh, Mick, and the Liveski's (not sure about the Russian couple's surname, I listened to it on audio and it never came out clear enough for me to guess for sure) 6y
JenlovesJT47 @drokka I agree, I think she whined too much! 6y
